BOSTON — Tigers manager Jim Leyland said today that the Tigers are putting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman on the disabled list and will recall left-hander Andrew Miller to start in his place Friday night against St. Louis at Comerica Park.
Leyland said that Miller will stay in the rotation as long as Bonderman is unavailable, but the plan is to send him back to the minors once Bonderman returns.
Bonderman, who continues to have trouble where he had a blister on his middle pitching finger, is eligible to return for his next scheduled turn, eight days from now against the Los Angeles Angels.
Miller, the Tigers’ top pick in last year’s draft, made his major-league debut last season. He made eight appearances with the Tigers, all in relief. This will be his first big-league start.
“I’m excited,” Miller said via telephone today. “Making my first start is definitely a thrill. I’ve always been a starting pitcher. My goal has always been to get to the big leagues to start games.”
This will be the second start Bonderman has missed with the finger problem. The Tigers recalled Triple-A right-hander Virgil Vasquez to take his place Sunday night in Minnesota. Vasquez got knocked out in the third inning and took the loss.
Earlier that day, Miller made his first start for Double-A Erie after being promoted from Single-A Lakeland. “Our reports on that game were that he had the stuff to get major-league hitters out,” Leyland said.
Leyland said that both he and general manager Dave Dombrowski wanted Miller as the replacement for Bonderman on Friday.
