Boston resigns Youk (1 Viewer)

Red Sox, Youkilis agree on contract extension

On the day of the deadline for filing for arbitration, multiple baseball sources confirmed today that the Red Sox and first baseman Kevin Youkilis reached agreement on a four-year, $41 million contract extension through 2012, a deal that also includes a $13 million club option for 2013 that could bring the deal to $53 million over five seasons. The Sox have already signed 2008 American League MVP Dustin Pedroia this offseason, inking him to a six-year, $40.5 million deal in December. In Theo Epstein's tenure as general manager, the team has yet to go to arbitration with any player. Jonathan Papelbon is the other big name on the team who is eligible for arbitration this year. Youkilis, who will turn 30 on March 15, earned $3 million this past season. He had the finest season of his five-year career in 2008, batting .312 with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs. Youkilis finished third in the MVP voting and won the Hank Aaron Award as the league's top offensive performer. Interestingly, in late December, Youkilis's agent, Joe Bick, said it was unlikely that the player would agree to a long-term deal this offseason. "We've had some initial conversations toward a long-term contract, Bick told the Globe."It doesn't look promising."

BTW the Yankees were infamous for letting young players go thru arbitration and never signing them to these friendly contracts before Free Agency hit. Finally last year they signed one of their arbitration eligible players to an extension for the first time (I think ever). Who was that player? Robinson Cano :lmao:

Based on everything Paps said, I strongly disagree.Great signing, didn't pay the premium post potential career year, and are only on the hook until he's 34.
Agree, the Sox done good here. He'll be in Boston for his career peak and the option year allows management to assess his decline at 34-35.

Whats wrong with Cano?

Agreed, great deal. Between him and Dustin they had a very good offseason.

The guys on the Hot Stove sem to think this may drive down the remaining FA contracts. They also compared Youk's #'s last year to Nick Markiakis, saying they were almost identical(OPS). Hopefully this helps the Orioles get something done with Nick. Probably without a severe home town discount that Boston got Though.

His career peak is over, which is a good chunk of what differentiates him from Teixiera, along with the outside/inside signing factor.Players peak fairly consistently between 27 and 29.It's still a good signing though.

Teixeira will be 29 the 2nd week of next year. Youkilis will be 30 the 2nd month of the season. There is little differentiating the two in age.

One off year after three good ones? He' still a career 300 hitter. And he's young. Can't have a superstar at every position.

And a career 335 OBP. It is a very rare player that can walk as few times as he does and maintain a good OBP.
