Boxing is dead and has been for awhile (1 Viewer)

Boxing died for me when I paid like $100 to watch Tyson bite Holyfield's ear off. Pretty sure that's the last fight I ever paid for.

Don't recognize any of the names of current champions other than Tyson Fury, and that's just because of all of his social media presence. Once in a while if we have a group of people together we'll get a UFC fight, but that's mostly because we bet on it.

The fights were bad for a long time. Guys would dance around for 12 rounds and win on technicals instead of trying to knock the other guy out. Probably because there was so much money in it, you didn't want to get hurt. And right when that started really being an issue, UFC was there to fill the void with guys who would actually try to win. Let that simmer for a couple of decades and this is what you end up with.
That’s just Floyd really. He made an absolute killing doing it and making people watch, hoping to see him finally shut up. Most of the other big fighters of that era were pretty action oriented: Manny, Canelo, Cotto, etc.
People paid hoping to see someone figure out a way to beat Mayweather , and only boxing purists could appreciate Money`s style .
That said there are still fights that capture the pure essence of pugilism , heart ,courage and pro level skills , the Micky Ward vs Arturo Gatti trilogy comes to mind , those fights single handedly saved boxing from crumbling to dust when it needed a good shot of adrenaline .
Diego Corrales did his part after that to save the sport in the 2000`s, a true warrior .
My point is every now and then a fight will come along between 2 guys that shows us why we love this sport so much and give us hope that its still alive and breathing.

Boxing is dead for four reasons:

1) Proliferation of billions of sanctioning organisations, most of whom have ridiculous numbers of world titles at the same weight because reasons, that will rarely co-operate and give us the fights people want
2) Majority of boxers ducking opponents and not giving us the fights people want. Heavyweight division has been pointless since Tyson for this reason
3) Frequent and blatant riggage
4) The burst in popularity of UFC/MMA, which is chess compared to the tic-tac-toe of boxing

My mother subscribes to MLB Extra Innings to get all the games, right? Nope. It's at baseball's whim to throw their games on Apple TV+ or Paramount+, or any of the other streaming services. I'm actually angry for her and for the game itself, because they have enough trouble with younger viewers. I long ago gave up on baseball, but wait until football figures out there's more money to be had that way. They've already started with the Amazon Thursday game, which is a bad, bad trend that nobody is writing too much about. Maybe because all the papers are corporate now.

Everything was always money, but it's a worse kind of money now. The people and entities wielding it seek not prestige like they used to, only more and more money -- that's because of the nature of the entities. (I'm talking about corporations.)

They'll lose the next generation because of it.

Yep. Totally agree. Short-sightedness is killing us from every angle.

Funny this thread was bumped last night when we had, on ESPN, the next chapter in the long history of the legendary Mexican vs Mexican epics. Julio Caesar Chavez Jr, Erik Morrales and Marc Antonio Barrera were all there to watch and it lived up to every bit of the hype. The stuff of legends. Not a boring second of the fight.
