BP's list of 100 good or decent fantasy movies: we done (1 Viewer)

Why am I doing this? I need attention. I feel like some really good fantasy movies did not make the sci-fi/fantasy list and those wrongs need to be corrected!* I think Scoresman is correct in his assertion you are scrapping the bottom of the barrel to get to 100** and I had wanted to challenge myself to see if it could be done.

Upon my initial thoughts of movies that might fit on this list, I came up with about 70 movies. I am going to watch some of the movies that I have NOT seen that were mentioned in the sci-fi/fantasy thread and after some research/rethinking I think I can get to 100. As I mentioned in the sci-fi thread I am not the biggest fan of lists since I personally have not watched EVERYTHING and I feel like you can't have a comprehensive list without doing that. As such, this list will be heavily tilted towards what I have seen and what I remember, I simply do not have the time or the desire (mostly the desire) to watch/rewatch hundreds of movies. (some of them I might not even be able to find.)

I imagine there will be a considerable amount of genre overlap but I plan on keeping my list to fantasy movies as listed on IMDB. My goal is to spend friday/Saturday watch movies and start posting by Sunday/Monday.

never seen it. So just for you I rented it and honestly....you owe me $3. It's an interesting premise I think so I think it's wasted potential. There are some funny moments and I get that the ending was meant to be profound and I guess it is but I was kinda "meh". Does an ok ending make for a good movie? maybe but I wasn't all that impressed. Don't worry though, I'll have plenty of stinkers on my list.

I would like to apologize to the 3 or 4 of you that are interested in my thoughts and feelings about fantasy movies. Between being lazy and procrastinating it's taking me longer than I expected.

Unlike our last ranker, will you conside christmas movies to be fantasy (as they should)? He did a great job but left some incredible movies out there.

Just one last thing before I get started here but I am going to exclude some movies from this list, it's only 6 movies though. While it makes my list less authoritative it gives us a nice little discussion starter and like I said it's only 6 movies so out of the 80 or so bad movies on this list I'm sure we can find a place for them or I might watch them later and update this sometime next year.

I didn't watch Mary Poppins...I just didn't want to.

The second is the Harry Potter franchise. I've seen a good amount of clips and I'm sure it's fine but I just feel like it would be somewhat improper to rank a series that I have not watched. Of course, I could have just threw it in the 20's and none would be the wiser...

Excalibur, The Seventh Seal, Conan and Big Trouble in little China are all for rent but to be honest, I don't really want to spend $17. They did have the 2011 Conan the Barbarian streaming on Peacock and it was ok despite bad reviews. I think that's just my default reaction to most movies.

98: Bedazzled

BP says: I never knew this was a remake until I started this list. One day I'll have to watch the original to compare (which also means rewatching this one)

96. Little Nicky

BP says: You were warned! Me and my best friend loved this when we were teenagers. Very low brow comedy but I still think it has its funny moments. Haven't watched it in a while but thinking back there are some absolutely cringe inducing moments but not the worst movie ever made or anything.

95. Space Jam

BP says: As I'm sure that a lot of us grew up with Looney Tunes so this could just be a nostalgia pick but I recently rewatched this with my niece and nephew and they enjoyed it and I think that's the point here...its good family entertainment. I think has a good soundtrack. Another real positive for me is that I really liked Bill Murray in this.

Based on your first six, you definitely should have spent the $17.

rude!

Somehow better and funnier than it should be.

Admiring this effort, but yeah some of these movies are why I combined fantasy with sci-fi.
it gets better! Well maybe
Well at least you haven't posted any Woody Allen movies yet.

Sleeper would be scifi, not fantasy.
He has a movie that would be considered “fantasy”.

The one where he's a 60 year old sportswriter and married to Helena Bonham Carter?

Well, he’s not actually in the one I was thinking of - just the director.

94. Liar Liar

BP says: Not going to lie here but I like Carrey a lot. Maybe not his best or most memorable but I still found it rather enjoyable.

I feel like anything can be called "fantasy" at this point.
imdb does list Liar Liar as a comedy/fantasy and to get to 100 you have to dig pretty deep. there might be 99 lotr clones but the quality likely dips and I tried to incorporate some other movies that I felt were pretty good or decent (hence the title) I do feel like I've done a pretty good job but I'm not above thinking that I could have done better.

90: Goosebumps

BP says: Full disclosure but I read all the Goosebumps books as a kid. Did it make this list since it's nostalgic for me? Very likely but I also don't think this is a horrible film and I'm saying this as someone that isn't a fan of Jack Black.

89. Inkheart
BP says: I enjoyed the cast in this one. Never knew this was a book series (it seems like almost everything is a book adaptation) until doing this list.

85: The Santa Clause

BP says: In the parthenon of comedians I don't think Tim Allen is very highly regarded and sure he's not Norm MacDonald or Ricky Gervais but I have enjoyed many of his tv shows and movies (Home Improvement, Last Man Standing and that movie should have been on scoresman's list, Galaxy Quest) I remember this being funny and given my general additude towards said comedian, I'm sure that I'd still find it pretty funny. I like the concept in general though. The Series of movies has dwindling rewards but that's pretty much every series ever.
