Childress briefly spoke to reporters after practice, but he didn't say an agreement has been reached.
"I haven't signed anything yet. I haven't read anything yet," Childress said. "I have a document I have to look at. I'm going to go upstairs and read that document and see what it says. I just want to go up and look at the language."
Citing a league source, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported Wednesday that the multi-year deal should be signed and announced soon, likely before the playoffs begin in January.
Childress was hired by Vikings owner Zygi Wilf in 2006 and is the fourth year of a five-year, $10 million deal. The Vikings have improved each year under Childress' watch. They went 6-10 in 2006, 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 with an NFC North title last season.
With quarterback Brett Favre at the helm, the Vikings are 8-1 this season and competing with the undefeated New Orleans Saints for the NFC's top playoff seed.
"I am grateful for the opportunity I was given," Childress said. "I've got a good group of guys in the locker room, which I've said over and over. I've got a great ownership group. Not only am I grateful for them, they've been good owners from a standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen. There's a good dialogue."
The Wilfs have opened their wallets to sign big-money players such as defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and wide receiver Bernard Berrian. They also have poured money into upgrading the team's headquarters in Eden Prairie and steadfastly supported Childress even when he was the subject of criticism by fans early in his tenure.
"They have to buy into the vision of how you see the Minnesota Vikings going forward, and we've been good enough to be able to fulfill part of that vision," Childress said.

If I were Childress I would hurry up and sign the extension before Favre starts his annual talk of retirement.
Now it's only 10. Ok, he might get irked a little. Hell, he won't even show up for the 2010 season until game 4 of the exibition season.
wait till he wins a playoff game, at the very least.
