Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress said Thursday that he's reviewing a contract-extension offer from the team.

Childress briefly spoke to reporters after practice, but he didn't say an agreement has been reached.

"I haven't signed anything yet. I haven't read anything yet," Childress said. "I have a document I have to look at. I'm going to go upstairs and read that document and see what it says. I just want to go up and look at the language."

Citing a league source, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported Wednesday that the multi-year deal should be signed and announced soon, likely before the playoffs begin in January.

Childress was hired by Vikings owner Zygi Wilf in 2006 and is the fourth year of a five-year, $10 million deal. The Vikings have improved each year under Childress' watch. They went 6-10 in 2006, 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 with an NFC North title last season.

With quarterback Brett Favre at the helm, the Vikings are 8-1 this season and competing with the undefeated New Orleans Saints for the NFC's top playoff seed.

"I am grateful for the opportunity I was given," Childress said. "I've got a good group of guys in the locker room, which I've said over and over. I've got a great ownership group. Not only am I grateful for them, they've been good owners from a standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen. There's a good dialogue."

The Wilfs have opened their wallets to sign big-money players such as defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and wide receiver Bernard Berrian. They also have poured money into upgrading the team's headquarters in Eden Prairie and steadfastly supported Childress even when he was the subject of criticism by fans early in his tenure.

"They have to buy into the vision of how you see the Minnesota Vikings going forward, and we've been good enough to be able to fulfill part of that vision," Childress said.

Is Brett gonna get a cut of that? Because without him, you know there's no way in hell he gets that extension!

You got that right. Up until about game 2 of this season all the Vikings fans couldn't stand Childress. Now, suddenly, they all love him.As a Packers fan, I'm glad Childress got an extension.

and you have MM and thompson running the show, nuff said.

Childress should be fine if he realizes that T-joke should be cut. Sage can backup but they need a QB of the future. If he hasn't figured out the T-joke is worthless, he will be fired eventually for not waking up to that fact.

Well everyone should give him credit for how he's handled AP this year. Remember when he used to pull him at the goal line for Chester on a regular basis? Thank God he got wise to that...

This thread is about Childress, not the Thompson Twins. Stay on topic!

With that team I could coach them into the Super Bowl. Childress can thank Favre, ADP and that great defense. Childress is a liability more than an asset to that tem.

No...now he gives the ball to Jeff Dugan on 4th and 1 and runs the TE/Hback straight at Grady Jackson.

As bad as his playcalling, coaching and what not can be..he has gotten some talent into this team and we have improved our win total each year he has been here...

I can see them getting a really good 1st round quarterback this year in the draft. Lots of them available and there aren't a ton of teams that will spend a first on a quarterback.

While fans are obviously enjoying the Vikings' season, I haven't heard much in the way of this sudden love for Childress as you suggest. Most of the fawning is over the Vikes' new QB Brett Favre. You may recall him from his days with Green Bay.

Any places you can make a futures bet he doesn't make it through the end of the extension. And 4.5 mil p/ year... ooof.

Dead serious about the futures bet too.

This is good news for fans of Detroit, Green Bay, and Chicago.
Why? He's the best coach in the NFC North. Don't see why Detroit, Chicago, and Green Bay should rejoice over that.
Remains to be seen if he is better than Schwartz....but being better than Lovie and McCarthy...is not exactly a ringing endorsement right now.

McCarthy miraculously went 13-3 last time he had Favre too. Hint....it ain't the coach. You put the best football player of all time on any team, they get better.

I don't understand why they rushed into getting him the extension. At least see how the team performs in the playoffs, and he better have a LOCK DOWN plan for QB in the Post-Favre Era that does NOT include Tarvaris Jackson as a possible starter. And he needs to plan for the Post-Favre Era to be as soon as this off season. Too soon.

The team has improved by two wins every year (even prior to Favre). They're going to win the division (albiet one with the Bears and lions) for the second year. Yes BF is making the team better than anyone could've predicted prior to BF. From all reports he was the guy that made the Favre thing happen. They could've anted up and gotten in the Cutler stakes given how suspect their QB status was prior to the season, but didn't. The team hasn't had a return engagement on the Love Boat (or anything similar), which was a huge priority to the guys who signs the checks. I would reasonably guess that these were the priorities Ziggy Wilf had set forth for what he wanted his head coach to do.

Nobody's ever going to compare the guy to Bill Belichick, but from any way you look at it, he deserves a contract extension. Yea Favre could have a melt down. Yea it was probably dumb luck that ADP fell to them after half a dozen other guys. Yea maybe it was crazy for the Chiefs to trade Allen for a LT and a bunch of draft picks.

Childress may have had the stars align for him thus far but it's hard to reasonably argue with the results. He may make us wince a couple times a game, but I for one will take that in exchange for the success we've had the last couple of years.

I still think he's pretty dumb but obviously that argument doesn't have a lot of traction when they're 8-1. When they're faced with great talent and great coaching (i.e. in the playoffs) I expect another meltdown.

Your current QB isn't going to like that.

I could not disagree with this more.... Favre has been treated really well in Minny. I am sure if they did draft a QB they would tell Favre that your job is not in jeoprady until the wheels have totall fallen off.

He wasn't pleased when the Packers drafted Rodgers, even though he was (supposedly) contemplating retirement at the time. He will expect them to use that pick on helping him get another ring now. Or at least that's been his thought process in the past.

That was circa 2005. Entering next season it will be 5 years since Rogers was drafted and a forty year old Favre on his second team since then would probably understand the move.

That's true. He's kind of reinvented himself with the Vikings. No more forcing throws, now willing to mentor younger players, no more personal lockeroom (that I know of). Maybe he no longer feels he has to be the GM, too. :lmao:

That was because Favre knew he had another good 15 years left in him. :pickle: Now it's only 10. Ok, he might get irked a little. Hell, he won't even show up for the 2010 season until game 4 of the exibition season.

Hopefully a stipulation is that he has to hire an offensive coordinator to run the offense during the games, if he did this I would be more than pleased.

Haha, sore subject I guess. And no, not ALL Viking fans love Childress. Most of us wise ones know damn well Childress is not the answer and that without Brett this year, we would be 5-4 at best. But hey, at least we swept the Pack this year, and with Favre as our QB, it makes it all the more sweet! :goodposting:

True. I give much more credit to the ownership for bringing in the players we've gotten recently than to Childress.

The guy has improved the team every year. Maybe, just maybe, he knows how to coach?!?!?!?!?!I know some people question some in game calls, but coaching is MUCH more than that. Getting the most out of your players is coaching as well. This is a team that had Bobby Wade as their leading receiver last year and they won the division. Wade can't even make the active roster of the Chiefs this year. Everyone said signing Shiancoe was a huge mistake, but after a few years in Minnesota he is a top TE. If players are good (or become good) you have to attribute it to coaching. I know it is easy to jump all over the guy, but results do speak loudly and his team has gotten better every year. To me, that is what a good coach is supposed to do.

Childress as a gameday coach and Xs and Os guy? Bottom 5 in the league. As a GM, he'd probably be pretty decent though. Have to give him some credit for assembling the roster, but how much of that falls on him is hard to say.

Who loves him? I would say the large majority do not love him.

Win total is mainly a product of the owners forking out more cash to FAs each year.

I do give him some credit for finding players that have improved in our system. I do not give him credit for many, many bonehead in game decisions. Why do we always play to our opponents level? Why do we always go into a shell when we have any kind of a lead, allowing inferior opponents to storm back? I also am not a fan of the zone blocking scheme he implemented. Look at the guys on our O-line. 4 out of 5 of them are built for a smashmouth, power running game. They are not the nimble kind of guys that work in a zone scheme. Trying to fit a round peg in a square hole IMO
