Brady Quinn traded to Denver (1 Viewer)

Jay Glazer just posted on Twitter that Quinn was traded to Denver for Peyton Hillis and two conditional picks.

More to follow as details made available.

I wonder what this means for Kyle Orton. The Broncos were interested in Quinn last year (to some degree) before the Cutler deal.
Don't see it being a factor for this year...they'll let Orton start and show whether they should long-term or franchise him after the season. Can't imagine Quinn would threaten Orton's status as the starter this year. Chris Simms is likely a goner though.

The Browns have traded quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos. The Browns will receive fullback Peyton Hillis and a sixth-round pick in 2011 and a conditional draft choice in 2012 for Quinn, who began last season as the team's starting quarterback.

I think this indicates a QB competition during training camp. I don't see Simms leaving any time soon unless they draft another QB. Simms is a capable QB3 for the Broncos.

With Orton only signed (if he signs the RFA tender), he is only under contract for 2010 while Quinn is signed through 2011 fairly cheaply unless he sees a majority of the snaps (which is a possibility)

Broncos traded FB Peyton Hillis, a 2011 6th-round draft selection and a late-round 2012 pick to Cleveland for quarterback Brady Quinn. 31 minutes ago via UberTwitter

so a 2011 6th and 2012 pick? is this confirmed?

Claussen to the Browns with Delhomme bridging the gap and Wallace the gadget player?

Question- Holmgren always seems to get good production out of his QB. He just knows how to pick and develop them. Given he is not a coach with the Browns, how much hands on influence will he have in the selection/development of which ever young QB they add this offseason (assuming they do add one).

I disagree. Simms showed less than nothing last year. I think Quinn assumes the number two role but it will be a competition between him and second year man Tom Brandstater. I could easily see Simms shown the door any day now.

Follow me on twitter @theaudible for my reactions but here's my first thoughts...

low risk move from the Broncos here

Quinn worked with Weis and is familiar with the system

Orton is safe as the starter in 2010 if healthy

Simms is likely gone as Brandstater has been developing well (according to the Broncos)

Not a fan of this move, but in this system you just never know.

a fullback and a couple late picks....ouch
Just because McDaniels defined Hillis as a fullback does mean that Cleveland will use him that way. McDaniels does even know how to use the talents of Eddie Royal. Hillis has all the skills to be a starting RB. I have seen very little of Quinn but what I have seen was not good.

I was a big fan of Hillis in 2008, but it all seemed to fall apart for him last year. He wasn't getting playing time, and when he did play, good things didn't happen (i.e. missed tackles on special teams, missed blocks, etc). The rumors I've heard discussed WRT Hillis in 2009 had to do with him not doing the little things and not being a complete football player.

It wouldn't have surprised me to see him not make the Bronco 53 man roster in 2010.

Quinn is a guy who has not exactly been pushed into a good situation. I haven't watched much of the guy, but I'm not gonna hold anyone not succeeding on a poor team against them - the cards were stacked against anyone there. I'm hopeful that McD can turn Quinn's career around and turn things around for him. Best case: Quinn ends up being who we thought he could be when he came out of ND. Worst case: he holds a clipboard for a season, and the Broncos loose a couple of late picks and a guy who was going to be cut anyways.

With that in mind, Quinn for Hillis is good value.

Two picks and a thumper for a QB that can't keep it inbounds when throwing over 25 yards. Not bad.
Seriously, not too bad. Broncos fans will not like Quinn's complete inability to put up a deep ball...Sure, he didn't get enough chances in Cleveland, but he was never very good, and everybody knew it.

I would guess a lot of influence in selection, almost none in development. It would create a problem for Mangini if Holmgren was on the practice field coaching players. Also, Cleveland doesn't run the system that Holmgren coached his whole career.

:blackdot: It's hard to dislike Cleveland because they're so pathetic, but I like seeing teams lose that make horrible decision and horrible decision. Must suck to be a Browns fan

That's about as close to trading a guy for a pack of chips as you'll ever get in the NFL... :blackdot:
Yeah. Guess they didn't want to come off as too dumb by cutting their only 2 qbs who they just signed within the last couple years, if that's even possible anymore

I don't know exactly what type of offense Cleveland is running but I wonder if Holmgren looks at Hillis and see a little of Tom Rathman in him. Hillis could catch a lot of passes if Cleveland starts moving towards a west coast style offense.

That's 2 years in a row where the Broncos have traded for a QB, who started at least half the games of the team they were traded from in the previous season.

Has this ever happened before?

I'm not sure that bringing Hillis on board is suddenly a sign that Holmgren goes to war with Harrison/Davis/Hillis, and does not draft a running back early.

I wonder how Hillis will figure into the Cleveland backfield... Potential bad news for Harrison owners. Hillis showed in 2008 that he is a very capable RB in this league.

Interesting move for both sides. As a Denver fan, I like it. Regardless of whether or not Quinn ever develops into anything, McD, for reasons unknown to most, seemed to have little use for Hillis in his offense. I think a change of scenery will be good for Quinn and for him, it's now or never. Should make for an interesting training camp/preseason.

Interesting point. Probably not. What's funny is that last season I think most Denver fans would have rather Denver traded Cutler for Quinn & picks than Orton & picks. Now they have both.

Quinn hasn't shown much so far; after three seasons, he's had two good games against awful defenses ('08 Broncos, '09 Lions) and not much else. He averaged a pitiful 5.2 yards per attempt last season, tied for the worst in the league with his fellow first-round pick from '07, JaMarcus Russell.

I think Cleveland is wise to cut bait with Quinn and move on. He's not a very good passer and he's not a good quarterback. Sure, he could magically turn it around, but the Browns are a lot more likely to magically find another QB who plays well. Cleaning house (Anderson and Quinn) was the smart move, I think. I'd much rather have Wallace as my QB than Quinn, so at the worst Cleveland's moving in the right direction.

For Denver, you can't fault them since they gave up practically nothing. And maybe they'll be able to get Quinn playing better in their system. It seems like McDaniels is throwing darts on a board at QB (Orton, Brandstater, Quinn) hoping one of them will work.

In the grand scheme of things, this trade means little. Both Denver and Cleveland still need QBs badly.
