Brandon Moore Expected to Start (1 Viewer)

Report from KFFL. Not sure what this means...except that it sounds like expectations for Derek Smith and Moore to start inside in the 3-4.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers LB Brandon Moore will start at inside linebacker at the "ted" position.

"ted" position? I am somewhat new to IDP, second season, what position is that? Is it only a matter of time before Willis takes over or will Willis take Smith's spot?

Sorry...little more explanation...(there is a thread somewhere about ILB's in the 3-4 )

The starting "ted" linebacker will be Brandon Moore, who played extremely well after moving into the starting lineup midway through the season to replace Jeff Ulbrich at right outside linebacker in the team's 4-3 defense. Moore was named NFC defensive player of the week for his performance against the Vikings. He had 15 tackles, two forced fumbles, a sack and three QB pressures. Moore led the 49ers with 114 tackles and 6.5 sacks. In nickel situations, he lined up at defensive end to rush the passer. Although he said he probably will not be asked to do as many different things this season, he believes he will see some time at defensive end in nickel situations.

****

Smith and Willis are competing for the "mike" position, which is the inside linebacker on the weak side. The other inside position is the "ted," which lines up on the tight end side. The "ted" will have to sift through more traffic, while the "mike" should be the position that makes more tackles because he won't have to contend as much with guards or the fullback.

i seriously doubt that D Smith would hold him off, regardless of what's printed now.

Willis and Moore in the middle, count on it.

thanks for the quick brief. I know what the mike, will and sam are, just never heard the ted before...like I said, i am somewhat new. I thought I heard back when willis was drafted that he might take moore's spot, stinks that i was wrong considering i dropped moore and then draft willis....

the part that really kills me, is the guy i was trying to trade moore to (his LBs are seriously lacking) tells me he is nothing but a backup and then goes and picks him up as soon as I dropped him....talk about salt in the wound.

The terminology is different from playbook to playbook. Sometimes you'll see Mike-Will, sometimes Mike-Ted, sometimes Mo-Mac among other things, but Jestefarean is right here.I too will be very surprised if Willis isn't the Mike (WILB) and Moore the Ted (SILB) on opening weekend.

Dude, this is not news.
It was to me - thanks for posting it.I figured Moore would have a role on every down, but had no idea what role on any given down.
With all due respect, every Niner homer on the board has been saying this for months. I know you are not new here, so maybe you missed the threads. In summary:Derek Smith is done.

Derek Smith played like absolute trash last year. I'm sure every 49er homer would love to have a pie throwing contest where Derek Smith and Kwame Harris (Right Tackle) have their faces peering out of the hole.

This is the forum link I was talking about that discussed the value of ILB's in a 3-4. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...howtopic=317840

Regarding this being news, or not news...I'm a self proclaimed 9ers homer, and honestly I don't think Willis will start day one. I could be completely wrong, and as a fan I hope I am, but my opinion is Nolan is a "respect" coach. He is trying to build an environment where the players respect him, and know how they will be treated. With that said despite Smith's bad play the general rule of not losing a job due to injury applies. Unless Willis flat out beats Smith in preseason I see Smith starting the season at ILB next to Moore, with Willis playing situationally, and in the Nickel. Baring injuries Willis will win the job and take over mid-season at some point, but I don't think Smith will lose his job unless he is really terrible. Just my 2 cents (and again, if I'm wrong, as a fan I'd love to see Willis sooner rather then later, but my gut is Nola will try and tip his hat to the vet and let him start for a while)

If Willis isn't starting on opening day, Nolan should not be allowed to wear a suit. Professionals know that "respect" means playing your best players regardless of how long they have been on the team and without thought to how his players feel about it. Derek Smith was a freaking liability last year and he has no business being on the football field as a starting LB. I mean honestly, didn't you hear all the news this offseason where our coaching staff proclaimed that we wanted 7+ new starters on the defense this year? Then we proceeded to go out and get a corner, a safety, a LB, a NT, etc in FA and drafted Willis with our top pick? How obvious can they make it, that you play good, you start. Kwame Harris better see his ### on the bench too, because that guy is a freaking turd. Bottomline, there is no loyalty to veterans on a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 5 years.

We shall see... a lot will depend on how quickly Willis catches on...but you also have to remember Smith was bad last year in some part due to an injury...prior to that he's been a rock on that D (not a star, but solid) for years. He's a team leader and well respected. I expect we shall see him back at least for week 1 baring injury.

Also, honestly (and I'm sure I just missed it) I have no recollection of the 9ers announcing they "wanted 7+ new starters on D" Do you have a link to that story?

:goodposting: Derek Smith has been average at his best during his tenure with the team...and the last few have been awful, IMO. He doesn't fit the attacking scheme that the team wants in their 3-4. Go let him "read and react" for some other team in their 4-3.

Justin Smiley was on Sirius yesterday. He was raving about how Willis is by far the fastest and most athletic LB on the team (no surprise)...but he tends to get engulfed by linemen in heavy traffic. His comments were all about Willis being on the field/starting, nothing about "if he can beat out Smith" or "if he can learn the D". From everything I've heard from the OTAs also make it sound like its a "competition" in name only. The job is Willis'.

Pairing Willis with the original JunkYardDog BMoore will be awesome.

Jetsdude, my original post was a tongue in cheek to some dudes who doubted my comments going back over the last year about Smith being done, and BMoore would be the man.

Profootball Weekly chimes in that Smith will start...but no information on others. I've heard their information is sometimes questionable though...but for what its worth.

New blood abounds on the Niners’ defense, with four fresh-faced starters expected to be in the Week One lineup. But the way we hear it, the Niners are still counting on significant contributions from a handful of seasoned vets, and that especially seems to be the case regarding longtime tackle machine Derek Smith, who is entering his 11th NFL campaign. Smith is reportedly in much better shape than he was last season, when a quirky eye problem caused him to get double vision whenever he’d look up. As a result of that problem, Smith often had to change his stance to enable him to look straight ahead, and his play recognition suffered, even though he still managed to register 68 tackles. With Smith saying he’s completely recovered after having surgery on the eye, we’re told the master plan is to start him at inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme in which he still figures as a primary run stopper. Just as importantly, Smith is expected to serve as a key mentor for promising first-round draft pick Patrick Willis, whose presence initially is expected to be felt as the primary pass rusher in the team’s nickel defense, which team insiders predict could end up being on the field more than 50 percent of the time in ’07.
