Brandon Spikes (1 Viewer)

Per Pro Football Focus:

The Patriots have six players who saw the majority of snaps last week who still did this week. Outside of them, there were a number of injuries that caused major changes. Patrick Chung, Ras-I Dowling, Albert Haynesworth and Myron Pryor didn’t play a down on defense. Because of all of that, Leigh Bodden went from 47% to 89%, Kyle Arrington went up from 44% to 86% of snaps, and Brandon Spikes went from 26% to 68%. Coming back from injury was Gary Guyton who played in a third of this game. We also saw slight decreases in snaps from Andre Carter and Shaun Ellis.

Is this a sign of Spikes getting healthier?

They did not specify how many were nickel snaps.

I know Belichek is difficult to predict, but does anybody think/know if Spikes snaps will increase even more, or is this the snap count percentage cap we can expect for the season? Is it still possible/likely he could hit 90%?

Jene, or anybody...thoughts?

Don't have the % but check Mile Reiss column out for D snaps by player via twitter. I missed it this week. Unless NE plays a run heavy team OAK, KC last year, MIA in the past, etc. or are in a game were NE can't go all pass happy then Spikes snaps look like 50% - 65% if healthy. So much depends on BB's packages. My link

Watched the game and they were in the nickel or some variation a ton. Spikes is getting healthier but is a 2 down guy. They will play Guyton and they like Fletcher (converted college DE similar to Brushi's back ground at AZ) as ILB/rush OLB. Fletcher seems to be a guy that could rush the passer a bit from the ILB or OLB depending on 4-3 or 3-4. You can bet that Fletcher will be on the field when NE goes to a 2-3-6 or a 2-4-5 or what ever BB dreams up to shake things up.

Spikes has more range imo than Guyton & Fletcher, and when he is healthy I fully expect that he will get the nickel package along with Mayo, Spikes had solid games in 2010:vs Ravens 10-6-0

vs Vikings 5-2-0

@ Jets 5-4-0

vs Ravens 10-6-0 RUN HEAVY so spikes

vs Vikings 5-2-0 RUN HEAVY so spikes

@ Jets 5-4-0 RUN HEAVY so spikes This was the first game between the two in NY and NY won with ball control. He also had a good game against NY in the NE blow out as he played in GL sub packages and had an INT

I will give you he plays faster than timed and instinctive but BB plays SO many sub packages that I'd stay away or only use him as a match up. This week vs OAK would be a good time as a match up play.

From my perspective, Spikes is the best "hitter" of the entire line-backing crew. Something that is needed on the Patriot defense. Was pretty obvious even early in his rookie campaign.

spikes was already mlb.

I'd be a little skeptical about a bump unless it's in the sense that maybe he gets a couple tackles that mayo would've stolen.

I think he's still a deeper leagues only guy until we see him in there in nickel.

Any way Spikes sticks in the nickel even after Mayo gets worked backed in? How did he look vs. Pitt? Or does Guyton assume Spikes nickel role once Mayo returns? Thanks in advance!

I'm not gonna say a bad word about mah bwoi, but to be fair about it, pitt did have 23 runs + 36 completed passes, which I would guess is probably something like 25% more opportunity than a more normal game, and hopefully nwe will reduce his opportunity even further.

also, 14 of those completions were te/rb.

I honestly don't know at this point. I grabbed Mayo in a league last week (I had the spot, and he was there, so I figured WTH), but between his knee and Belichick scrambling like h**l to assemble something resembling a defense I can't say with any certainty what's gonna happen with the Pats linebackers.

Wouldn't be counting on 10 solos again from Spikes, but I also wouldn't be cutting bait...TBH outside Chung and Arrington (who's getting picked on like a cross-eyed second grader) the whole New England D (IDP-wise) is giving me heartburn. :hot:

What is a typical recovery time for a strained MCL?http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/7204357/new-england-patriots-brandon-spikes-strains-mcl-week-week

Any news on the severity of his knee injury? I saw him playing all 3 downs next to Mayo before he got hurt.
