It's not totally clear from this article, but reports are that they basically lost everything. A few things managed to be saved by workers carrying them out, but the vast majority of the 20 million items are gone. It was the 2nd largest museum in the Americas.
It's unclear how the fire started, but firefighters had to go down to a lake to get water because none of the fire hydrants worked. Thanks to corruption, Brazil has become basically a 3rd world country.
