Brian Baldinger film study on Reggie Bush (1 Viewer)

Baldinger does a weekly segment on NFL Total Access breaking down game film. He previously did it on the spread option used by Vick against TB and he did this weeks on Reggie Bush the decoy.

He showed one of McAllister's long runs. On that play, Bush was lined up wide and came across as if a reverse. Brian Kelly ran across the formation with Bush and ran right by McAllister when he was already 7 or so yards downfield. He showed about 4 or 5 plays and it was obvious that Bush was keyed on each play. Despite having not shown that breakaway ability on offense as of yet, opposing defenses are worried about Bush 1st on that offense. It is probably a significant reason for Duece's success on limited touches and Colston's surprise performances as well.

It's good stuff. There were similar plays in the Atlanta game where they showed the Falcons keying heavily on Bush and it opened nice running lanes for McAllister. The question then becomes will defenses adjust to not keying so heavily on Bush in order to try and take away the things from the Saints that are working - especially with regards to McAllister in the running game - or do they keep keying on Bush and believing that stopping him is the main priority and if McAllister, Colston and maybe Horn get theirs so be it? If it's the former, that could open things up for Bush to finally make an impact in the running game. If nothing changes that certainly bodes well for McAllister, who's having a much better year than I anticipated, that's for sure.

I am glad Bush is a 60 million$$ decoy, because Reggie had a full head of steam on a run and was arm tackled around the waist at the 3 yard line and flung down. Bush does not have NFL power.

Which game was this?
Last game.
Can you really make a conclusion that a player does not have "NFL power" based on one play? Come on
To be fair although a Bush supporter I was a bit surprised he was taken down so easily there. However I believe bumpman is right here and he just thought he could make the guy miss in that particular case and took that approach instead. Earlier in the game he lowered his shoulder and hit a defender head on and pushed the guy three yards for a key 1st down conversion. In regards to the original post, it's also not so surprising that two of McAllister's longest runs this year (one was his longest, not sure if the other was his second longest or not) came on fake reverses to Bush.

I saw that play too... BUTI also saw the play were he dragged a defender 5 yards to get a VERY important first down. Without that first down the Saints lose.So if he doesn't have NFL power, he has NFL heart.I don't even like the guy... LOL!

As a Bush owner (signed for the next two years in a contract league), I will start petitioning my league to include a decoying statistic somehow. I'm sure I can get the Randy Moss owner to campaign with me.

Maybe you should check out the other thread...the one about how Reggie Bush leads the NFL in receptions.

And it was 6-3, 210lb Juran Bolden he dragged for the first.

I am not saying that Reggie Bush is not a good football player.

It is just the NFL hype machine builds a player up so much that he can`t help but dissappoint a little.

Agreed. The fact that he got the #1 play of the week with that run back was a joke. It was a nice play but if his name were Bob Thomas it would have been in the game recap but not the week's highlights.

That run back was a prime example! I was in a pub that was showing highlights. I did not even know that was Bush. It just looked like any other KR that the team had set up a good return and he ran untouched down the sidelines. It was not a "highlight" reel return by any means. Bush just broke to the right and scampered in.

Nothing against Bush but I did not thing much of Baldingers piece. From what he showed I did not come away believing the defense keyed on Bush at all or anymore than any other player who is put in motion.

He sure as hell has NFL speed though. Speed kills. Just ask Tampa Bay.

I saw Baldinger's piece in the background as was working on some other stuff but thought I caught a clip where he showed Bush running to the outside and missing a huge hole made on the cut back and Baldinger commented that Bush runs so fast that he missed it ... if it was anyone else he would have said how impatient he was and needs to develop better vision.

 Baldinger presented it as if the use of a decoy is something new just because Bush was the decoy.

I fully agree... ANYONE with any kind of speed would of took that to the house. No offense to Bush supporters (non political) it was not worthy of play of the week.

If you'd have listened to the entire piece, you'd have heard Baldy say that he does need to be more patient and slow things down, letting his blocking set up.

Thanks for the clarification, as mentioned I didn't catch the whole thing. I like Bush and think he will do well, but just seems like every negative about him is being presented with a positive spin.

Well, his name is Bush.

Sure, Reggie Bush didn't make any eye-popping or jaw-dropping moves during that return. However, it was a kick return for a TD. Those always make the highlights. In addition, that TD ended up being the winning score. So, I can see the merit in that play getting the play of the week.

As said above, it was the game-deciding TD, it happened with 4 minutes left in the game, the Saints were trailing at the time, and the offense had done little from the mid-3rd quarter on. Read it somewhere that it was the first time in NFL history a rookie had returned a kick for a winning TD with less than 5 minutes left in a game. Play of the week? Maybe, maybe not, but definitely worthy of consideration no matter who did it.
