Brian Simmons to New Orleans (1 Viewer)

An upgrade from Simoneau for sure.

Ahmad Brooks might be part of the reason Simmons was let go from Cincy.

I assume he becomes the MLB unless they sign someone else. Not sure I would feel comfortable with him as anything more than a backup with his injury history.

I'm not sure I understand the fuss about his injury history... Outside of the 5 games he missed last year, he had only missed 1 game in the 5 years preceding that. I think he becomes their starter and does a decent job for them. In no means do I think he will become a stud, but he should put up decent LB 3 or 4 numbers.

I'm leery of any veteran player who's had a significant neck, spine, or leg injury. Simmons was limited most of last season by a nebulous (per Marvin Lewis MO) neck problem. The official word was that he woke up one Sunday AM and couldn't go. Six weeks later he was still questionable and seeing time in a few nickel packages in lieu of a bunch of backups playing on a team fighting to make the playoffs. I'm in agreement with your assessment, but I think Simmons is a pretty good bet to miss time with this neck thing in 2007.ATC, local rumblings are that the Bengals released him to clear space to remain competitive for a couple of their own guys (Reggie Kelly, Kevin Keasviharn). Since they didn't have to make that move until they needed the space and could've gotten more space by cutting John Thornton at a deeper position, I think Simmons' release was more likely due to durability and talent issues. Any other explanation doesn't wash.

Jene was it Neurological problems, that you can remember or a strain?

I wasn't as excited about the signing as I read on the Saints message board. I hope we did not overpay.

It wasn't widely reported, but I remember hearing it was a "pinched nerve" in his neck. I was skeptical, though, because it apparently was associated with a lot of arm weakness and was aggravated frequently despite minor contact.

;) I hope we did not pay too much, and are looking for someone else.

Found it.

Which is why Simmons is trying to play Thursday night after missing the last four games and playing only 20 snaps since Oct. 1 with a pinched nerve in his neck that has weakened the strength in one of his arms.

He practiced Wednesday and is again listed as probable, but center Rich Braham (knee) didn’t work for the second straight day in team sessions and is listed as questionable for his return after a nine-game absence. Defensive tackle John Thornton (knee) also didn’t work again and is doubtful.

After missing his second game in five years against Tampa Bay Oct. 15, Simmons tried to come back in a reserve role the next week against Carolina and held up only nine snaps. After the coaches opted to move him from the middle to strong in place of the injured Rashad Jeanty the next week against Atlanta, he could only go 11 plays and hasn’t suited up since.

I felt like I could go and play through it. I guess it showed I couldn’t. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen tomorrow night,” Simmons said. “I’m at the point I’d rather go out there and let it tell me I can’t go instead of sitting on the sidelines wondering if I can.”

What is the state on Bengals linebackers if Thurman isn't back?
I would assume -SLB - JeantyMLB - BrooksWLB - JohnsonMiller could push Landon Johnson I guess with Nicholson backing up Brooks. I would think they are looking at some middle, more than likely lower tier veteran LBs to be backups and to also draft some more.ETA - The state is they have upside but it looks ugly if you ask me. Perhaps this is what you wanted.

...You have been a player that has been in the lineup virtually every defensive down during every game. This past year, though, you missed a few games with a neck injury. Can you address the injury and if there are any long term ramifications from the injury?

"It was something that happened in the fourth game of the season and I played through it for the next month or so. It was bothersome and I got treatment on it and had a specialist look at it and it was determined that the best course of action would just be to rest it for a month or so. That's what I did and I was able to come back and play the last four games without any setbacks and it felt great. The Saints gave me a thorough physical and everything checked out very well and everyone was pleased. There is nothing to worry about."...

Thanks. It does look pretty unsettled.

rumor is that the Saints will also sign Kaesviharn. For some reason we are taking every CIN defensive player......without a criminal record.

he played pretty well in those 4 games too: 26 tackles, 2 INT and 1 FF...

For Immediate Release: March 13, 2007Acquiring the proven, veteran performer the team had sought to add to the secondary, the New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms with S Kevin Kaesviharn on a four-year contract, it was announced by the club today. Kaesviharn, entering his seventh NFL season, was an Unrestricted Free Agent after leading the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006 with six interceptions and also recording 58 tackles, a career-high four sacks and a forced fumble...
