Broadcasting Your Own Internet Radio Station (1 Viewer)

I'm referring to internet radio such as Live365, Loudcast, etc. Anyone here ever done this, or know much about it? Any experiences, success stories, failures, etc? I'm not even really sure what the realistic goal or payoff is but it sounds fun/interesting. I suppose the simplest goal is to get people to listen, and the dream goal is that you get enough listeners to garner interest from advertisers? Or is it something that is fun for a few days then the novelty wears off as you realize no one is listening to your station so why bother?

Also, what type of equipment is needed? I imagine it requires more than a Macbook.

It's like doing your own podcast, you'll think it's awesome for awhile, but unless you happen have true unearthed talent your number of listeners is going to be tiny and there is no path to revenue generation and it gets old and you'll quit most likely.

I've known a few people that did it (and podcasts - i find the ideas behind these things similar) and the effort required to put out a decent product (not to mention the money invested) was just too much for a non-money generating hobby.

Don't forget that any revenue you generate from advertising, you will owe a portion to the composers and artists. Don't mess with ASCAP and BMI, they are like Nazi storm troopers!

But if you would enjoy doing it yourself, there's nothing wrong with doing it. There's nothing wrong with doing a hobby for just a little while either.

I enjoyed the content of the people I knew that did podcasts, or internet radio.

But going into it thinking you're going to become an internet "f" list celebrity or generate any mentionable revenue isn't realistic.

I've followed D list celebrities who attempted to podcast or D list DJ's with internet radio stations that still couldn't make any money.

My dream job as a child would have been to have some type of variety show where it was some sports, some music, some comedy, some entertainment news or other light topic.... just a mish mash of everything. When i found out about podcasting I always thought that would be the perfect avenue... then I realized.... the odds someone would want to listen to me for any amount of time would just be so miniscule.

I mean how many bad beat stories, complaints about variance, or dump stories can someone listen to?

I believe those fees are covered with a Live365 agreement.
