Browns | Pool Backup at SS

Tue, 9 Aug 2005 17:53:09 -0700

Jeff Walcoff, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports Cleveland Browns S Brodney Pool is working as the second-string strong safety.

I was a little surprised to read that Pool has been working at SS. Pool was a physical FS in college, but his tackling suffered his final season.

Also, Pool will have a MUCH harder time surpassing Jones on the CLE depth chart, as opposed to Russell or Crocker.

Browns | Rotating SafetiesMon, 1 Aug 2005 05:59:32 -0700

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said he's planning to use a rotation at the safety spot, one that includes safeties Brian Russell, Sean Jones and Chris Crocker. "I think we have three safeties that we feel good about, really four, because Michael Jameson has done some things also. Sean is better than he was in the passing camp. It looks like he's focused, he's studied and he's come to camp ready to go."

I have Pool & this move surprised me, as well. However, longterm, I like it. It might be an indication they're not sure about Sean Jones & want to groom Pool for the SS position. Interesting.

Maybe Romeo wants his safety's to be interchangable, (seems to be the in thing right now), and is giving Pool some work there. I didn't get a chance to see Cleveland's game vs the Giants. How did Jones and the other safetys look?
