My buddy just told me DEN "fielded" cutler/cassel trade scenarios and Cutler found this out. I dont have NFLN but can someone get some dirt?

Schefter was just talking about this on NFLN. Said that TB and Detroit were going to trade for Cassel and then trade him to Denver for Cutler.

Rotoworld) Speaking on NFL Network, Adam Schefter reported that the Lions and Bucs both attempted to enter Matt Cassel trade talks at the last minute.

Analysis: At least one of the teams was interested in acquiring Cassel and flipping and picks to Denver for Jay Cutler. Denver obviously told them to pound sand. Schefter was clear that the Broncos only fielded phone calls and never instigated Cutler trade talks.

Good business to always listen to trades but these two teams had to have some sort of knowledge that this deal could have been a possibility. why even field a phone call? Dude is your franchise QB

because you never know when "We'll send Cassel and our 1.01 for Cutler" turns into "we'll send you Ernie Sims for a 2nd". Never never never ignore a phone call in this business.

Cutler isn't going anywhere. Every team listens to trade offers, doesn't mean it is going to happen. The same site talks about Ray Lewis signing with Denver as well.

I mean Cleveland would field offers for Lebron, doesn't mean they would consider trading him.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network and Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver report that the Broncos have been shopping quarterback Jay Cutler.

Per both reports, the Bucs and Broncos were trying to swing a three-way deal pursuant to which Matt Cassel would have been traded from the Pats to the Broncos, Cutler would have gone from Denver to Tampa, and the Patriots would have been compensated presumably by the Buccaneers.

According to Schefter, the Lions also approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler.

And here's where it gets interesting. Schefter's version creates the impression that the Broncos didn't initiate the talks, and merely responded to the offers presented. Vic Lombardi's version suggests that the Broncos were and are shopping the eleventh overall pick in the 2006 draft.

"I've heard the rumors," Cutler told Vic Lombardi. "I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it."

Despite Cutler's generally P.C. comments, Schefter contends that Cutler was angered by the news.

There's a consensus in league circles that Cutler has plateaued after showing some improvement early in the 2008 season. He has been criticized in some circles for having a nonchalant demeanor.

The reality is that, whenever there's a new coach, there's a chance that he'll want to pick his own quarterback. Regardless of whether the Broncos initiated the trade talks, the fact that the Broncos said anything other than "hell no" suggests that new coach Josh McDaniels wants to go in a different direction.

From your link:
CBS4's Gary Miller spoke with Broncos GM Brian Xanders Saturday afternoon. Xanders denied any plans to trade Cutler, saying "We are not trying to trade Jay Cutler. We will not trade Jay Cutler. He's a Pro Bowl Quarterback." He went on to say, "you can ask Josh McDaniels, and he'll tell you the same thing."
As far as the speculative portion of the article, I don't really trust any Bronco news coming from the Denver media these days. I think their contacts within the organization left when the last regime left. Schefter is about the only source I would believe when it comes to that type of info.

Well thats why I said mixed signals right? First they say they are shopping ...yet they have the GM quote. Course is the GM going to say yeah we are shopping him (in case the deals dont go through)?Where the is smoke there is fire.

Assuming the Broncos were to trade Cutler, which i dont believe they would, what could they expect to get, say from the Lions? Both of thier firsts?
I doubt Denver wants the 1.01.Would probably be the 20, the 33, and multiple picks in 2010 and/or players(though I'm not sure who that would be, unless it was Kevin Smith).

I hate the speculation threads and the big quote that jumped out at me from all that was from Cutler himself; "I've heard the rumors," Cutler said. "I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it."

Has it even been confirmed that he was being shopped by the Broncos?
Depends on if you believe Cutler or not. "I know what they're trying to do." Not a lot of grey area there.
Its not about believing Cutler. Lombardi is the one who is saying the Broncos were shopping Cutler, and he's the one who Culter said that to.Im curious if there is any source for this other than Lombardi or if someone else is confirming what he is reporting.

Now it gets interesting.

Sounds like damage control and flat out lies out of the Denver brass.

"A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Broncos were actively pursuing the trade because McDaniels wanted to be reunited with Cassel, who excelled under McDaniels last season as an injury replacement for Tom Brady.

The source said in the aftermath of the news Saturday, Cutler asked permission to find his own trade partner but was denied by the Broncos. The source added that Cutler is still hopeful he will be traded because he feels betrayed by McDaniels.

The source said Denver is no longer interested in dealing Cutler, who made the Pro Bowl in 2008, his second full season as a starter. The source said Tampa Bay, Detroit and Chicago could be possible destinations if Cutler gets his way and is traded. The source pointed out that until Cutler heard about the trade talks Saturday, he was completely happy playing for McDaniels and being in Denver."

They'll kiss and make nice again

McDaniels is an IDIOT. He is new to the team and would ruin the chance to be respected by trying to trade the leader of the team and the franchise QB??? MORON

From Fellow Lions fan thats in Denver....

From Denver CBS 4:

The deal we are negotiating with Denver includes the following:

1. Our #1 overall pick.

2. Both Cutler and TE Scheffler.

Anyone else in Denver see this on TV?

Denver would take Detroits place as the dumbest team in the league.

As a life long Broncos fan, I am PISSED! For the long term, I'm not sure there is a better QB in the league. If something ends up going down with Cutler, I'm finding a new team.

If the first bolded statement is true, I have a hard time believing the second.

Then you didn't go through getting to experience John Elway followed by the prolonged agony of Griese and Plummer, followed by the renewed hope brought by Cutler. Having that dashed right now would be a bit much to take.

Hey now.. Be a life long Lions fan....and then talk about QB missery

As a huge fan of Cutler since day one, I find this very disturbing.

As a life-long Cowboys fan, I say we'll give you Romo for Cutler straight up.

I think a few teams wanted to throw Cassel at the Broncos due to the NE connection (McDaniels) to get one of the best young QB's in the league.

I can't say I blame them trying as I think Cassel's going to be a colossal failure of Elvis Grbac proportions in KC.

All this as Derrick Ward rolls into town. "Yeah Derrick, Our Coach, Franchise QB, and Front Office are not on the same page at all. On the bright side you may or may not be a perfect fit to set our offense up for years to come... or not."

Sounds like Cutler feels they are still looking to trade him...

Trade talk rattles Cutler

Even without serious competition from a backup, the Broncos had themselves a quarterback controversy Friday.

Jay Cutler, the Broncos' starting quarterback, the franchise, the one player who carried all hope for a greater future, believes his days with the team are numbered — even after a proposed deal that would have sent him to Tampa Bay and Matt Cassel to Denver never materialized.

"My understanding at this point is they're trying to trade me," Cutler said this afternoon. "We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity."

The deal had Tampa Bay trying to acquire Cutler in exchange for a first-round draft pick. In turn, the Broncos would have traded the first-round draft pick to New England in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel.

McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator last season when he helped guide Cassel, a career-long backup, to an 11-5 record and 89.4 passer rating that ranked 10th in the league.

It may be important to note, Tampa Bay initiated the deal. And they weren't the only team that inquired about acquiring Cutler.

"He's not the only person in the last few days we've received calls on," McDaniels said. "We've received trade calls on a number of players, which is not uncommon this time of the year. I also think the sensitivity of the other trade that was occurring, with my relationship with New England and the whole Cassel thing, I think that stirred the pot even more."

And then McDaniels made a point of emphasis: "We don't want to trade Jay. We never did. He's our quarterback. We're excited about this season. And excited about what we're doing here in free agency to improve our team."

Cassel was instead traded Saturday to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for the No. 34 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Nevertheless, Cutler was shaken his team entertained moving him, and doesn't believe such a possibility is dead.

"I'm upset. I mean I'm really shocked at this point," he said. "I could see why they want Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. I just don't get it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."

Cutler has three years left on the six-year contract he signed prior to his rookie season. He said Broncos officials denied they were trying to him in a conversation with his agent Bus Cook. Cutler added that after the proposed deal spread through the Internet, the team cut off communication with Cook.

Had the proposed trade gone through, it would have come as a surprise to most followers of the team. Cutler is a first-round talent. He was picked No. 11 overall in the 2006 draft and undoubtedly would have gone higher if the league re-did that draft today. Cassel, meanwhile, did not start one game at quarterback at USC and never started in the NFL until this, his fourth season.

Granted, he played behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC and Tom Brady at New England. But Cassel doesn't have the arm strength or big-play capability of Cutler, whose 4,526 yards ranked behind only Drew Brees and Kurt Warner among NFL quarterbacks last season.

If Cutler is not traded, and he stays with the Broncos, can his situation be mended? Cutler took a long pause before answering.

"Anything can be mended," he said. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."

Cutler said he had spoken with teammates Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokley, Tony Scheffler and Casey Wiegmann, among others, about his trade.

"I know they love playing for me and I love playing for them," Cutler said. "There's going to be a lot of problems if they try to trade me. Well, they've already tried to trade me, but if they trade me for sure."
