Broncos release JJ Arrington (1 Viewer)

Didn't see this anywhere yet:

The Broncos today released running back J.J. Arrington after Arrington failed his physical.

Arrington, who signed with the team as a free agent from Arizona in March, had knee surgery after the Super Bowl and had been unable to participate so far in the Broncos' organized team activities.

Arrington was one of three free-agent tailbacks signed by the Broncos, and the team also drafted running back Knowshon Moreno with its top pick in the draft.

So, as I understand it, Arrington has made 1.8 million dollars from the Broncos (his signing bonus) for essentially signing a contract (twice) since he hasn't even been able to participate in OTAs. Unbelievable.

we had Broncos beat writer Frank Schwab on The Audible 3 weeks ago and he speculated this move would happen. When the Broncos signed yet another RB - this time Darius Walker - it signaled that they might be privately concerned about Arrington's knee.

Knowshon Moreno is going to get a majority of the touches in this backfield and I anticipate that includes 3rd downs and most goalline carries. People need to realize that this team is not going to run a New England West (pass happy) type of offense. They are built like a power running team, and a strong ground game can help keep their pathetic defense off the field.

Who would have thought that Denver would start cutting some of these RBs after the drafting of Moreno?

Moreno and Jordan will be your 1-2 punch at RB.

If the defense is that bad, what does that mean for the offense?

 Who would have thought they'd draft Moreno with all that sick RB talent already on the roster?

they can't release an injured player without the NFLPA signing off on a settlement so..well we don't probably know all the details

...unless the contract was contigent (or some part of it was) on him passing the physical.

From what I understand, the Broncos don't have to pay anything due to a waiver. I will see if I can dig up a link.

as I understood it, it was money already received we were talking about
I think you might be right, I could have sworn I read they didn't have to pay. But I checked google news and could not find anything. If they knew his knee was an issue, why would they give him 1.8???? I have defended Josh McDaniels on this board, but that signing makes no sense, given his injury.

Perhaps that is an optimistic way of looking at it. Could it not very well be that their poor defense will neutralize their ground game because they will be playing from behind?

Who cares
My guess would be everyone who has posted in this thread ...
:jawdrop: But why would anyone in Fantasy Football care about JJ Arrington.
well it's not huge news but if you're a Moreno owner or perhaps will be in the future, especially in a ppr league, Arrington was potentially a target to get some receptions/play a 3rd down role, if he was slotted into a Faulk like role as some suspected he would.

Same here. I believe that the 1.8 million was a signing bonus.
Per Rotoworld:Peter King reports Denver only paid him $100,000, and released him now to avoid a roster bonus. Denver signed Arrington in March hoping he'd be Josh McDaniels' next Kevin Faulk, but Knowshon Moreno will now play passing downs. The move should ensure Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan's spots on the team. Arrington may not resurface until 2010 because of his knee problems.

see the 1.8 mil wasn't a signing bonus."signing bonus" has become a shorthand of sorts for some reporters and it's lazy reporting IMO.

The quoted roto post reads like 100k signing bonus and left to assume that 1.7 was for roster bonus

That makes the deal make alot more sense. Because obviously the Broncos must have known his knee injury was there, and took a $100,000 gamble. That is not bad. 1.8 million, however would have been foolish.

Back to the real matter at hand, if the Broncos think as Peter King seems to-They don't have a 3rd down back then. Moreno shouldn't have to be the 3rd down back too. In the Pats system (moreso when younger) Kevin Faulk was THE 3rd down guy in the backfield and it stemmed from David Meggett who was the same with the Giants. It puts a big play speedy shifty back on the field that is clutch AND can do the little things very well like block or pickup the blitz all the while, the main cog gets to take a break. This is all woosh over McDaniels head if he thinks Moreno or Buck or Jordan are doing it.

Moreno doesn't get the break(and he'd have plenty of carries with the break)

Lamont and Buck are soooo not "built" to be a 3rd down back.

I would guess the light goes off for McDaniels or if he doesn't think as King does, then there already is someone else not mentioned here that will be the 3rd down back.

I don't know enough about Hillis to say if he could.

In desperation due to injuries, younger Faulk got me thru bye weeks in PPR leagues many times. Whomever they do decide upon as the 3rd down back might not be such a bad FF player in PPR leagues and we should probably make a mental note of it.

I think the irony is that the RB with the best all around tool set you describe is already on the Bronco roster - and his name is Moreno. He has the skill set you described to be a 3rd down back (assuming he can/learns to pass block). He just also happens to be big/strong enough to play on 1st and 2nd down as well. My point is that there is no reason (save for giving him a blow) to take your best RB out of the game too often. Think Matt Forte - which is about as close a comparison I can draw in terms of size, skill set and situation (although Denver is built as more of a passing team).

I think it's also difficult to predict how closely the Broncos will resemble the Patriots. While McDaniels comes from that system, that doesn't mean he'll simply take a cookie-cutter approach to his team and their offense. I mean, Lovie Smith came from the Rams - the Bears are about as far from the "Greatest Show on Turf" as you can get. Mike Holmgrin's Seahawks don't run an offense nearly as run-focussed as the Packers were, even under his system. Parcells is another example - his Giant teams were very conservative offensively - hardly what the Cowboys looked like when he was there.
