Broncos tight end Scheffler on trade block (1 Viewer)

The Denver Post confirms the Broncos have been shopping TE Tony Scheffler.

Scheffler's skills aren't a great fit for Josh McDaniels' offense that uses three wide receivers and a blocking tight end (Daniel Graham). He could also use two tight ends at times, so we're not sure it's a necessary move. Even in a potentially explosive offense, Scheffler's value would take a hit if he stays in Denver. Anyone know who's interested in Scheffler? I can't tell if it's a good time to sell or buy, lol.

I'd sell him. People still seem to be pretty high on him and have him ranked in dynasty top 10's. He's injury prone and in a poor tight end offense right now. Who knows where he goes but a big part of his value was the chemistry he had with Cutler.

Isn't Scheffler Cutler's best friend on the team? This can't help Jay's mindset towards the Broncos.

McDaniels is pretty much doing everything in his power to enrage Jay Cutler. Maybe he's just trying to instill some toughness in the face of adversity for Cutler since Cutler is used to having everyone tell him how great he is?

I get the "new sheriff in town" aspect of all this but I also think that "people skills" are important.

maybe the sheriff could use some brushing up on his. IMO

hard to say what, if any, impact this will have on Cutler and just as hard to say what this would do to Shef's value but it probably goes down if he stays in Denver.

Would this potential move make Hillis a candidate for TE in Denver since they have also signed 4.5 million old men to play RBBC for them?

IMO they are just shaking up the team. being a .500 team is not what Bowlen hired this guy to be. He wants to bring in his guys just like Kubiak did when he went to Houston.

I'm fascinated with the fact that although about 90% of the reason for the .500 record last year was the defense, McDaniels is completely re-making the offense. Signing a bunch of RBBC guys, trading Schaeffler, angering Cutler. Doesn't make sense unless this is one of those hires that are destined to fail because the coach only knows one side of the ball and one way to do it and is fixing what isn't broken? Seems that happens sometimes. I think the Broncos would have had a shorter turn around time to get back on top if they had hired a defensive minded coach and left the offense alone.

:) Seems like similar things going on in KC too. The story about Haley and Pioli with Waters is mystifying. Why are these guys challenging and pissing off their best players?

Excellent post. I can understand some tinkering with the offense but it was pretty successful the last couple of years but the defense was horrid.

Not sure, but both Haley and McDaniels are younger, offensive coaches who have never been a head coach before. Maybe all those owners that hire retrend coaches like **** Jauron actually know what they're doing?Nah....

You mean like the way that Coughlin did in New York? Or Belichick did in New England? Or Tomlin did in Pittsburgh?

I think those guys had the "respect" for lack of a better word to get away with it. Coughlin and Belichick had been coaches before. And Coughlin basically admitted in an interview, IIRC, that his demeanor in this regards in Jacksonville wasn't that successful.

:lmao:Of the three of them, Coughlin had the most "respect" coming into the job that I mentioned, and he'd just been fired by Jacksonville.

It's the Belichick/Pioli way.

Expect more failure - I think the Broncos & Browns are going to fail again, and that the Chiefs aren't looking too rosy, but the AFC West has 4 teams who try to piss their own players (and coaches in SD) off & implode while doing so.

On the topic of who's interested, I keep hearing how Atlanta wants a playmaker TE, and lots of people have them taking Pettigrew. Not sure I agree with this theory, but based on that, Atlanta could be a player. I'm not so sure that I wouldn't be more interested in Nate Jackson for cheaper, but throwin' in out there.

It's sure making my keeper dilemma -- Scheffler or Keller -- seem a bit easier. =pETMBSH: Per Burning Sensation, my post may have seemed irrelevant. I'll elaborate that my response was a direct comment on the "sell or buy" portion of Hoss's post, indicating that I'm considering Scheffler droppable and alluding that he's possessing lesser value than other promising young receiving TE's. This is based on a number of factors commented on elsewhere, such as Scheffler's injury history, the McDaniels offense, and the general instability that seems to be eating Denver from within.

So Belichick was a hard ### from the very beginning? That's not how I remember it. I remember him turning into one after they got successful.

You might want to ask Drew Bledsoe about that one.

I'm relieved to hear that. As someone who struggles with insomnia myself, I'm pleased at the prospect of contributing towards a restful night. As a further reward, I’ve edited my former post to comply with your standards and chosen to herald your wisdom by including you in my signature. My apologies for making a somewhat vague post upon waking that didn't properly express my feelings about Mr. Scheffler.

Ehh..letting a vet go after a young guy fills his place is hardly being a hard ###, IMO. Let's be honest, none of the coaches you named came in and tried to replace a young successful QB like McDaniels is doing with Cutler. This is almost equivalent to Coughlin trying to trade away Eli or Tomlin trying to trade away Roethlisberger when they first got there, before camp started. Do you disagree?

Isn't Scheffler Cutler's best friend on the team? This can't help Jay's mindset towards the Broncos.
So you're saying he's so weak mentally he'll fall apart?
I'm not sure if you're joking or not but I'm saying that Cutler is clearly already PO'ed at the Broncos and I can't imagine that trading Scheffler would improve the situation.

Why aren't they? Can't Scheffler block? I'm not sure who McDaniel would or could replace him with. What do they expect to get for him? A 2nd round pick?

All these rumors coming out of Denver are making McDaniel look like a real idiot IMO.

No he's not much of a blocker

It must be easier to teach a TE how to block than to teach him how to catch. <---(Secretly praying that Vikings trade Visanthe Shiancoe for Scheffler)

Honestly, I doubt they could even get that for Scheffler at this point. He's got one year left on his rookie deal, so the team that trades for him, does not have good cost control over him. i.e. Wouldn't that 2nd rounder be better spent on one of the good pass catching TEs this year? You get them for 4/5 years and can develop them in your own system. I think they'll be lucky to get a pick in the top 100.

I don't know, but Buffalo would be interesting, early 2nd? It's unlikely, but Tennessee with a late 2nd seems a good trading partner.

Ozzie Newsome couldn't block worth a lick.

maybe Atlanta? Ryan could use some more weapons. I expect they will open the playbook up a little this year after he has shown he is a competent passer and Turner keeps the D honest respecting the run.

Cinn could use a TE too.

Cinn is the kiss of death for fantasy TEs. They never throw to the TE. You're right about Atlanta needing a TE, but rumor has it they are interested in LJ Smith.

Atlanta would be a logical fit. Maybe a 3rd rounder for Scheffler? I'd rather spend a 3rd on Scheffler than a 1st on Pettigrew, and I like Pettigrew.Scheffler could be a solid #2 weapon in Atlanta's passing game and would be scary good on play action, where he was underused in Denver.Another potential fit is Detroit. Could be their #2 weapon behind Calvin and could be available for a 4th rounder. Basically the best fits would be teams with solid #1 WRs and a bit of a weakness at #2 WR that could use a pass catching TE.I very much believe(as a pass catcher) Scheffler could have Witten-like potential, but he needs to be in an offense where that is all they ask of him.
