Browns CB Baxter, RB Droughns have MRIs

In the wake of the Browns' loss to Cincinnati Sunday, two key players had MRIs to address injuries.

After reaggravating a pectoral injury from the preseason Sunday, cornerback Gary Baxter had an MRI Monday and will be reevaluated, head coach Romeo Crennel said.

"It affects him because it limits what he can do," Crennel said. "He's not playing with both arms."

Baxter said the injury does affect him, but it shouldn't be an excuse.

"It affects me a whole lot, but I always say if you're a football player in the pros you're not going to be 100 percent out there," Baxter said. "I was able to go out there and play, but I'm not up to where I want to be mentally and physically. Whenever you're trying to baby an injury and protect an injury, it alters your whole game.

"It hurts," he said. "I know something isn't right. We just have to go from there. We'll see what the doctor says."

Baxter said Monday it "might be the best thing" for him to sit out to allow his injury to heal fully.

The injury to Baxter comes at a time when the team still is without fellow corner Daylon McCutcheon, who missed the entire preseason and the two regular season games thus far recovering from a knee scope early in training camp.

Overall, it's a frustrating time for Baxter, who also missed most of last season with an injury to his other pectoral muscle.

"It sounds cliche but it is frustrating to continue to have these problems over and over and not perform like I want to and not be able to do the things the Browns brought me here to do," Baxter said.

Starting running back Reuben Droughns, meanwhile, had an MRI and will be evaluated today. He suffered a shoulder injury Sunday during the loss. Droughns missed the first series of the second half but returned soon after.

The team also was without outside linebacker Willie McGinest Sunday, who tweaked a calf injury during pregame warmups. Veteran Joe Jurevicius missed the game with a rib injury. Neither player's status for this week's game vs. Baltimore is clear.

Backup defensive end Nick Eason (ankle) and tight end Darnell Dinkins (hamstring) also missed the game in Cincinnati and could miss more time.

"If I had McGinest and McCutcheon, their experience, leadership and ability would've helped us," Crennel said. "That's the case with all these veteran guys. If you don't have them on game day, it probably hurts you a little bit. But you can't make excuses and you have to play the hand that's dealt."
