Browns hammered by flu (1 Viewer)

Packers at Home vs Browns looks like a real tasty matchup for those rolling out your Packers players or Defense. Ahman Green might even get points if he plays, I feel bad for you Browns fans.

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—The Cleveland Browns have been sacked by the flu.

Coach Eric Mangini said 12 players, including several starters, are home with flulike symptoms and he plans to adjust his practice on Wednesday as the team prepares to face the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Mangini said he’ll make sure his players get more rest and the team is taking precautions to make sure others don’t get sick.

Mangini said the NFL has provisions for teams that are overwhelmed by illness and that there may be roster exemptions to use, such as bringing players up from the practice squad.

Linebacker Kamerion Wimbley(notes) missed last Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh with the flu and Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers(notes) was sick during the game.

Add to that Lineback Jackson out for the season,

During the game? You gotta think that there is a strong possibility he infected whomever he had contact with on the field (PIT Players?). :lmao:

Non-event. This won't affect the chances of them winning their game this week. GB defense may get a boost becasue they will play the whole game. If the Browns suck more than usual, the GB starters will wrap things up in the 1st half and sit.

a lot of people have the flu in Cleveland right now. not too big of a suprise after Wimbley was held out last week.

Any word on which starters?
Link"The Browns’ sick players are: Shaun Rogers, running back Jerome Harrison(notes), center Alex Mack(notes), cornerback Anthony Madison(notes), safety Brodney Pool(notes), tight end Robert Royal(notes), wide receiver Chansi Stuckey(notes), linebacker Jason Trusnik(notes), defensive end Brian Schaefering(notes), fullback Lawrence Vickers(notes), defensive end Corey Williams(notes) and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley(notes)."

If I'm making a list of the factors influencing the Browns season, the "flu", even if it was a pandemic plague outbreak, would probably be outside the Top 5.

What is it with Cleveland?
good point. after all the staph infections Cleveland dealt with in the past, it almost seems a fait accompli that it'd be the first NFL team to be hit with a H1N1 swarm (if it is indeed H1N1).If I were a NFL player, I'd avoid signing with the Browns -- or the Redskins for that matter. They're both toxic teams.

Everyone be sure to bench all Cleveland players starting on your fantasy team this w....oh, wait....nevermind.

Don't have NFL teams provide regular flu shots to all personnel?

My employer does and certainly I would mandate (strongly encourgage) it of all players/coaches.

Sure if it is H1/N1 those vaccines are not yet plentiful but it blows my mind how frequently highly paid athletes get hindered by the flu which is so easily avoidable.

Many athletes are not that smart, they also think they're invincible.Put them together and you have a lot of guys not getting flu shots, one of them gets it, and it spreads like wild fire.

they are provided, but they cannot mandate that the players get them.and even if they did, i'm not so sure they are 100% effective anyway.highly paid athletes are human too.

Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers(notes) was sick during the game.

if it was swine that's not cool. a local high school football team caught the swine and they had to forfeit their last 2 games so no one would spread it.
The Browns should be so lucky

no, you're talking about the Packers and the Bears (next 2 games on Browns' schedule).

My son just got over an assumed diagnosis of "swine flu". Learned a few things that I was unaware of before.

What a lot of people are unaware of is that doctors cannot tell you that you've got H1N1 for sure ... not while doing routine testing in their offices. The tests for H1N1 identification are being perfomed on random samples at the state level and at the CDC in Atlanta. H1N1 is being assumed whenever fever + flu symptoms are presented because (a) it's considered too early for regular ol' seasonal flu strains to show up, and (b) the ramdom samples to date have almost all been confirmed as H1N1.

Now then. My son was seen by his pediatrician about 20 hours after onset of fever, and started his antibiotic course a few hours later. His symptoms were gone about a day later, and he was considered non-contagious 24 hours after that.

If the Browns' players have H1N1 (or really, any flu strain), they can get their antibiotics today and mostly expect to be over it by the weekend. Some people react differently, so for those 12 players, maybe 1 or 2 will have a harder time shaking H1N1, even with the help of antibiotics, and will be unavailable for Sunday.

Well if Derek and the Dominos starting offensive players can only generate that kind of pathetic yardage/points as seen over the last 2 weeks, I would guess replacing the sick ones with healthy backup players would actually be a cause for offensive improvement by the Brownies.

Kameron Wimbley is the only starter on defense that they need in there for a pass rush so replacing any sick starters with healthy backup players on D would also be an improvement.

I'll take the Brownies w/ the final point spread.

This could be Mangini's master plan, to infect the rest of the NFL to level the playing field, BRILLIANT !!!! I knew Mangina had an angle

Cool story but....Why Antibiotics Cannot Cure the Flu

He's probably talking about Tamiflu, and while it's classified as an anti-viral, many simply refer to as an antibiotic to avoid the explanation. Pretty sure that's what was meant. Overall, it's a mild illness for most and I doubt any of these guys miss the game. The only potential effects are the missed practice time and the other players that are likely to acquire it. The ones listed shouldn't miss the game. All that being said, Stuckey's gotta be even more pleased with the trade. "Hey, welcome to Cleveland. And here's our little welcome gift".
