Bucs QB Brad Johnson paid to have footballs altered before SB 37 (1 Viewer)

Four days before the biggest game of his life, quarterback Brad Johnson broke an NFL rule to help the Bucs win Super Bowl XXXVII.

At 34, Johnson had developed a few compulsions during his career. He changed his socks and shoes every quarter, and over the course of a game he replaced everything but his pants. Johnson always sweated profusely, and he liked the clean, dry feeling.

This was particularly true when it came to footballs. He had trouble gripping a wet football, a cold football or a new, out-of-the-box football.

It had been enough of a problem during the NFC title game in Philadelphia the week before — where it was 26 degrees at kickoff — that he was forced to wear a glove.

"I wouldn't have been able to play without it," he said.

This isn't relevant. Scuffing isn't cheating, only over-inflating. Can we strip the Bucs of the SB 37 title now as we have concrete proof they cheated. Now Matt Leinart has come out and said every team doctors the balls to suit their qb and this is a joke (his words not mine).

I admit the Pats messed with the inflation. Just as has been done with regularity for most every qb on every team for decades. But of course they will be the poster child that gets punished for it and the league will revamp the ball process going forward. This has become laughable. At least I am hearing Big Balls a lot on the radio lately. Embrace the hate.

Johnson didn't say exactly what he had them do to the balls.

"I went and got all 100 footballs, and they took care of all of them."
For the record, Raiders QB Rich Gannon threw five interceptions in Super Bowl XXXVII.

We should already have a huge long thread for this already, right?

This isnt the first time he's mentiooned this and it is cheating,...or is that only for certain teams?

Pretty funny quote from Johnson. He talked to The Tampa Tribune today, and said he and Gannon talked about having the balls treated before the game. "We were doing one of those milk mustache commercials and Rich and I were talking about the balls and we were both concerned about it, we were both worried about it.’’

"So, Rich, what would have to happen to those footballs that would cause you to throw, say five interceptions? Just asking...we all know the NFL has those things secured..."

The first sentence of the article says that he broke an NFL in the rule, but I didn't see anything in the article about what rule he broke. What rule is that? It specifically said he had the balls scuffed, but not only is scuffing the balls not illegal via the NFL rules, isn't it actually specifically permitted?

Heard an interview with Brad Johnson on sports talk show earlier today. He gave a pretty good explanation. At the milk commercial he and Rich Gannon discussed the ball situation and agreed mutually that someone should get the balls game ready. For the Super Bowl the NFL has 100 game balls ready for use (so they can sell/give them away afterwards) and these balls are brand new. Since QBs typically only use 12 each during regular season and playoff games and they have a chance to get those balls game ready (scuffing, rubbing, toweling, etc) prior to the game Johnson and Gannon saw nothing wrong with paying someone to take the time to get the 100 Super Bowl game balls ready for use. Sounds like a non-story to me.

This! Umm, sorry Brad but that D won you that super bowl. He should be happy anyone remembers he was there at all.

I believe the no corrugations language would be applicable to scuffing.

Yeah those two words don't mean the same thing.

We don't know fully how Johnson scuffed the balls. We also don't know what practice they were trying to deter with the corrugations language. Corrugations has quite a few meanings.

dude.its the systemic process of cheating, its that things always come back to NE.you're just to blind too see that y support a team that cheats.not just Brady but a whole team and organization that cheats..they were caught once before, now again it happens. 12 balls not a coincidence. stick your head in the sand all you want.you back a team that cheats.says a lot about the type of person you are, and speaks volumes of the Deflatriots..they just got lucky it was not a close game v colts. if you think Brady is on the level, and up n up QB , you're sadly mistaken..you couldnt tell he was lying today!? you coulnt see the narcissism in his answers like I dont want this to take away ruin our accomplishments this year..well you cheated, so you accomplished nothing.you made it to the big game.now you'll get crushed.and msudaisy26 koolaid larry dr detroit et al will tell us how its a conspiracy against NE how we're all wrong, basic blowhard stuff..

So, you are saying that this is the equivalent of years of demonstrated cheating?

At an organisational level?

It's bad enough to scuff the ball or cork your bat. Another altogether when the coach/gm orchestrates and/or is involved in a coordinated campaign of cheating.
