Team Signs WR Boston; WR Johnson Released

Buccaneers.com - [Full Article]

A week after bringing in wide receiver David Boston for a tryout, the Buccaneers have signed the eighth-year free agent. To make room on the offseason roster, the Bucs released first-year wide receiver B.J. Johnson. Johnson had signed with the Buccaneers on January 12.

I suppose there are worse places for Boston to go.

With Galloway aging, Clayton coming off an injury riddled sophomore slump and Hilliard the only other proven WR on the roster, it's about as good of a situation for Boston to go to.

Sigmund Bloom Posted Today, 04:39 PM B.J. Johnson, the only double phallic name in the NFL (think Peter O'Toole) has been released...
How soon we forget about **** McBallzac, long snapper for the Lions.

Could actually end up being the #2...scary thought, huh?

You know, if healthy, the guy has immense talent. He's not that far removed from 98/1598/8 and just in 2003 was 70/880/7. And at only 27 (he'll be 28 in August), he's not old either.

Stranger things have happened.

They probably paid vet minimum for this guy. If he catches 25 balls, makes some kind of contribution in anyway...

It was worth the cash. Low risk signing here. Kudos to the Bucs for giving it a shot.

Doesnt work, send him packing.

I think its all about health for Boston (not talent -- I dont think you lose that so quickly absent losing health), and we are not in the trainer's room ... but TB ran him through a physical and a workout before signing him .... sooooo ...

Who knows?

You seriously have to wonder if he will ever be healthy.... for obvious reasons.

:goodposting: Low risk signing with upside.

Agreed that he has all the talent in the world, the real question is "Will his knees hold up?" If they do, Bucs made out and he could once again be a difference maker.

I guess we'll see soon enough...

I can see this ending up as a Chris Hovan-type deal..... Gruden seems has a knack for signing cast-offs who were studs at one point.

I wonder what his ratio of success is with guys like this? It can't be better than 1:5, but still.... I think it's worth it.

I would not be surprised to see him as a TE, but I think more likely he is going to compete with those two rookie TEs in a new H-Back formation that Gruden is planning for next season.

Just a hunch.

200 - 3TDs is my season prediction. If he isn't cut in training camp.

err...Charger fans.........

I think this signing has alot to do with the GM Bruce Allen, this is typical signing by him. I doubt he'll do anything this year but bicep curls on the IR.

not really a big fan of this, but what's the downside? cut in camp?

who cares. either he can contribute more then edell sheppard or he's cut.

On the bright side, Pittman will have someone to pose with in the showers.

Please don't remind me. I met Boston down at the Chargers Fan Fest and he actually seemed like a decent guy (although no WR should look like a DE), but he played for the Chargers like Randy Moss without the talent - playing whenever he felt like it. When he was on he was unstoppable, but that was maybe half the time.

The Bucs appear convinced the 6-foot-2, 228-pound receiver can again be a threat.
LinkLooks like Boston has dropped some weight. Didn't the guy get up to 240-260 range a couple of years ago? 228 lbs on a 6-2 frame seems fairly reasonable.

So far our track record is good with young, former pro-bowlers. Look at Hovan, he was considered by many to be washed up, but Rod Marinelli revived his career. His initial contract was a 1 year deal, nothing special. If he would have flopped, big deal.

This year Gruden and Bruce are doing the same thing with 2 other former pro-bowlers, Boston, and Fonoti. If one of these guys can pull a Hovan, then the Buc's just got another incredible bargain.

GO BUCS!!!

It's not a popular opinion but I think you have a good shot with Fonoti. He's been given pleny of chances and hasn't responded yet, but he still has potential imo.I've long been a Boston-hater but all the people coming out of the woodwork to jump on this mover are silly. So the move was a bad one because he took the valuable roster spot BJ Johnson was taking up? The Boston move has no downside in TB.

Seriously, if this guy can even give 40% of what he was during his peak, that would give the Bucs:

Galloway

Clayton

Hilliard

Stovall

Boston

as their WRs. I could live with that.

Or it could signal that Clayton is getting traded.

Boston is looking STRONG! in camp. Gruden schooled the league on this signing.
Gimme a break. When is the last time Boston made it through a season? 5 or 6 years ago?

Cheap zero risk signing, but schooled the league? :lmao:

Fonoti wasn't brought in to start. The goal is to have him back up Dan Buenning, and they signed him because they had no one who could play LG the way Muir needed if Buenning went down.

Also, just a bit of a bump.... anyone by chance know where a list might exist of guys Gruden has done this with throughout his career as HC of the Raiders and Bucs? Would be something to look at... probably a good percentage indicator of the potential success of David Boston. That 1/5 is just a blind guess.

You are forgetting Edel Shepard, Larry Brackins, and Paris Warren.I know they are not mentioned as much as the guys you listed, but they should provide some interesting competition in camp. :pirate: Edell Shepherd is considered one of the best route runners on the team and made a huge touchdown catch against the Washington Redskins during the regular season. He is one of the only WR's that can replace Galloway as far as going deep.

:pirate: Larry Brackins is a phenominal athlete who the Buc's added to the roster last year at one time, just so another team couldn't sign him (Ten. I believe) PR quoted one of the Buc's coaches "If we were to take the 10 best catches in practice Larry had 8 of them"

:pirate: Paris Warren has good size (6-0, 213 lbs.) and is a physical receiver with extremely good hands for the reception. He is not a great athlete, but he is the type of receiver every team needs. He is the role player who will almost never drop a pass, will always do the "dirty" work, and can be a reliable source on third down situations. He may not be blessed with the best speed, but he can break a long gain once in a while, just like he showed in the pre-season last year.

This is common off-season chatter to hype up practice squad players. I am sure it is going on right now on every teams message boards. But, the point I am making is about probability. Chances are one of these guys will step up. Whether it is Boston returning to his pro bowl form, or Clayton returning to his rookie season form. And, with the guys Cap and I listed fighting for the #3 and #4 WR spots, it should make for some of the most intriguing camp competition in a while. :pirate: :pirate: :pirate:

Shepherd was supposed to have a breakout year the year before.... I'm already over him.

I think Brackins probably needs another season on the practice squad before he can be in mental shape for the game.

Warren is a question mark for me. I think that for the simple reason he is only in his 2nd year, we can't expect much more than WR4 production from him.

Looks to me though like the Bucs offense is about to drop Galloway this offseason and move toward a more run-oriented west-coast offense.

If it pans out, Cadillac might be a top-3 back for a while to come.
