BUCS to "experiment" with Phillips in Brooks WLB Spot (1 Viewer)

It says they are thinking of trying to have SS Jermaine Phillips play Derrick Brooks (cut) WLB spot this year. He'd have to bulk up some (& stay unhurt this year) but do Jene or you guys have any thoughts on the chance of this happening.

If so, what's his value this year?

Angelo Crowell was just signed by the Bucs. He can play both OLB positions (...and be productive at both). Should be an interesting offseason.

I agree....Crowell "should" lock down one OLB spot (as long as he's healthy) but the other one seems to be up for grabs. They seem "OK" @ MLB :goodposting:

That is actually a great experiment on their behalf. Phillips can hit like a ton of bricks, pretty good in coverage and has the makeup to be a pretty athletic linebacker. I'm not sure how great his pass rush will be or how he'll be shedding blockers but on paper it looks like he'd thrive from that position. I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Phillips may have a very difficult time staying healthy playin down in the box on a regular basis. The Tampa WLB spot will be an interesting position battle. Crowell should be a strong candidate to man one OLB spot.

Did June really play that badly to be cut so a safety can play his spot?
It's Brooks spot :banned:
So sorry :lmao: Did June really play so badly that they wouldn't move him back to WLB, the position he played well when in Indy.
New GM, head coach, and d. coordinator.
and....they kept other LBsMaybe I should just ask- did anybody watch any Bucs games? Is June done? Was he a product of Indy's system

I didn't watch very many Buc's games but I think you may have hit the head on the nail and he was a product of Indy's system. he never did as well as a Buc. I find it hard to believe Phillips can play WIL all the time - maybe some sort of rotation deal where he goes from DB to LB depending on down and distance.......some sort of hybrid role. My 2 cents.

When Indianapolis allowed June to enter free agency, he lasted well into the second tier of free agent signings (nearly a month IIRC) before Tampa signed him. I don't think there was much question that, even though he seemed to thrive in coverage and pursuit after making the transition to LB from safety, June wasn't a prototypical linebacker. He certainly wasn't considered as well-rounded as Mike Peterson or David Thornton. Many argued that June would struggle some at SLB, Tampa-2 or not, as a Buc. He was able to work himself into some nickel packages over the past two seasons, but didn't have anywhere the same impact he did in Indy.New DC Jim Bates wants a combination of size and speed in his backers. It's debatable whether June still has the speed, but he certainly doesn't have the size. Angelo Crowell fits the Bates profile much better, as does Quincy Black, who I believe should have an edge over both Jermaine Phillips and Geno Hayes outside.I don't see another team giving June a three-down role this season. He might find a niche as a nickel down specialist, but I think his days as an effective base defensive player are probably over.
