Since so many people have PM'd me for my thoughts on the draft I figured I would post it here to make it easier. ok so nobody asked, here it is anyway

Round 1 - (Picks 1-16)

1. Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long, Virginia - Miami will look to trade down but with no takers they settle for the high motor guy

02. St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long, Michigan – Perfect timing for the Rams, Pace’s career is coming to an end and they have the ability to fill in with Long at RT for a couple of years

03. Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College – Falcons are starting a new and Ryan will be the new face of the franchise

04. Oakland Raiders - DT Sedrick Ellis, Southern California – With Sapp retiring they get the big man in the middle they need. SE looked incredible at the Senior Bowl and that pushes him to be the first DT taken

05. Kansas City Chiefs - OT Ryan Clady, Boise State – Chiefs look to trade down but with no takers they fill in a hole on their very much depleted O line

06. New York Jets - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas – Jets get a much needed play maker on offense. Jets will love the 1-2 punch that McFadden and Jones provide

07. New England Patriots - DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State – Pats get some much needed youth at their DE/OLB position. They need to be able to put pressure on the QB and Gholston will provide that

08. Baltimore Ravens - CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy - You can’t blame the Ravens for taking the best CB available

09. Cincinnati Bengals - DT Glenn Dorsey, Louisiana State - Bengals would be tempted to take a DE here but they just cant pass up on Glenn Dorsey who drops because of some injury concern

10. New Orleans Saints - CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State - They add Vilma and now one of the top corners in the draft, look out for the Aints!

11. Buffalo Bills - TE Fred Davis, USC – This might be viewed as a reach, but hey it’s the Bills. This pick is also based on the signing of Bryant to fill their #2 WR slot. The Bills get someone who can split the middle of the field and make sure that defenses do not key on Lynch on every down.

12.Denver Broncos - LB Keith Rivers, USC – They pass on Dan Connor to go with the more versatile LB out of USC

13. Carolina Panthers - LB Dan Connor, Penn State – With Dan Morgan moving on they get the best linebacker in the country to step right in and make an immediate impact on their defense

14. Chicago Bears - OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt – The Bears need to rebuild their O line at some point

15. Detroit Lions - CB Aqib Talib, Kansas – If the Lions do not complete a trade for Lito Sheppard look for them to upgrade their secondary here, if the Sheppard trade does happen look for the Lions to grab an OT.

16. Arizona Cardinals - CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida - Yet another team that could be in the mix for Sheppard, if nothing happens look for them to get the speedster out of SF.

Go ahead and rip it :goodposting:

2nd half to follow later today or tomorrow

17. Minnesota Vikings - DE Derrick Harvey, Florida - Finally the Vikes have someone who can put pressure on the QB

18. Houston Texans - RB Jonathan Stewart, Oregon - Texans get a top notch back and they will have everyone asking “Reggie who?”

19. Philadelphia Eagles - WR James Hardy, Indiana – This is a homer pick so sue me. If the Eagles can not trade Sheppard for a WR, Hardy fills the big body and red zone threat they need. If they do get a WR in a trade look for them to get a big boy on either side of the ball or a safety

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – WR DeSean Jackson, Cal – With Galloway approaching 50 years of age the Buccs add some youth and speed to their WR core.

21. Washington Redskins - DE Phillip Merling, Clemson - NFC East has 3 Pro Bowl QB’s and the Skins know that they must add pass rushing to their line.

22. Dallas Cowboys (From Cle) - DB Kenny Phillips, Miami – This is the beginning of the end of the Roy Williams fiasco

23. Pittsburgh Steelers –OT Jeff Otah, Pitt – Big Ben is still getting sacked and now they lose Faneca. Otah can step in from day one and help at wither tackle position

24. Tennessee Titans - WR Limas Sweed, Texas – Titans add another weapon to help VY and having another Texan doesn’t hurt

25. Seattle Seahawks - RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois - Mendenhall falls into the Hawks lap as they find their long time replacement for Alexander

26. Jacksonville Jaguars - DE Quentin Groves, Auburn – Jags get some edge rush help

27. San Diego Chargers – OT Carl Nicks, Nebraska – Nicks great combine moves him into the first round as the Chargers upgrade their RT

28. Dallas Cowboys - WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State – It’s the perfect time to add some youth to their WR corps

29. San Francisco 49ers (From Ind) - DT Dre Moore, Maryland - The 9ers were horrible against the run last year, so Moore moves into the first round thanks to his combine numbers

30. Green Bay Packers - CB Tracy Porter, Indiana – Al Harris proved he is on the down side of his career, its time to find a replacement

31. New England Patriots – Pick lost due to being cheaters

32.New York Giants - CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech - Flowers improves their secondary and he isn’t the headache that could come from Atlanta

I think you are at least half a round early for Fred Davis. The Bronco's are going to sign Boss Bailey to play OLB and have desperate needs at OT and DT. Being there is no DT worthy at that point I see them taking an OT or trading up for Ellis or Dorsey. The Broncos are not afraid of trading up.Also the Vikings have a huge need for a pass rushing DE-Derrick Harvey.

Yeah i think the Bills reach every year, thus their reach at TE. As for the Vikings I already have DH penciled in at 17

Round 1 - (Picks 1-16)

1. Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long, Virginia - Miami will look to trade down but with no takers they settle for the high motor guy

- Like this pick; 1 & 2 will be both Longs; not sure the order.

02. St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long, Michigan – Perfect timing for the Rams, Pace’s career is coming to an end and they have the ability to fill in with Long at RT for a couple of years

- See above.

03. Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College – Falcons are starting a new and Ryan will be the new face of the franchise

- With Turner, they can now select Ryan and get a new face for the franchise.

04. Oakland Raiders - DT Sedrick Ellis, Southern California – With Sapp retiring they get the big man in the middle they need. SE looked incredible at the Senior Bowl and that pushes him to be the first DT taken

- I think Oak takes McFadden. They tied up a lot of money in Kelly and other than Russel/Walker, this team has no firepower on O.

05. Kansas City Chiefs - OT Ryan Clady, Boise State – Chiefs look to trade down but with no takers they fill in a hole on their very much depleted O line

- Clady is a reach here, and not one I think the Chiefs will make if Dorsey is on the board.

06. New York Jets - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas – Jets get a much needed play maker on offense. Jets will love the 1-2 punch that McFadden and Jones provide

- The Jets would proabably take McFadden if he is here, I just don't think he will be.

07. New England Patriots - DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State – Pats get some much needed youth at their DE/OLB position. They need to be able to put pressure on the QB and Gholston will provide that

- Agree; my guess is this pick would be Gholston or McKelvin/Jenkins depending on who is available.

08. Baltimore Ravens - CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy - You can’t blame the Ravens for taking the best CB available

- If New England takes McKelvin, I see Baltimore going with Phillip Merling. CB is a need, but Baltimore seems to really like drafting DL/LBs early. Merling is very much a Trevor Pryce clone and would fit their scheme well.

09. Cincinnati Bengals - DT Glenn Dorsey, Louisiana State - Bengals would be tempted to take a DE here but they just cant pass up on Glenn Dorsey who drops because of some injury concern

- Cincy would love to see either Ellis or Dorsey here. I don't think Dorsey falls. Word is he has checked out fine physically and this was the best defensive player in college the last two years.

10. New Orleans Saints - CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State - They add Vilma and now one of the top corners in the draft, look out for the Aints!

- Great pick for New Orleans; CB is still a big need.

- Davis is a borderline first round pick and would be a collosal reach here. I'd see them taking a CB like Talib or Jenkins over either a WR or TE.

12.Denver Broncos - LB Keith Rivers, USC – They pass on Dan Connor to go with the more versatile LB out of USC

- Rivers is a good pick; I could also seem they going OT if a guy like Clady is available.

13. Carolina Panthers - LB Dan Connor, Penn State – With Dan Morgan moving on they get the best linebacker in the country to step right in and make an immediate impact on their defense

- They took Beason in the first last season and still have Diggs & Davis. My pick here is Jonathan Stewart. He is a big back kinda like Stephen Davis and since Davis retired, this team has not had an effective ground game. I'm also partial to Stewart and think getting him here is great value.

14. Chicago Bears - OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt – The Bears need to rebuild their O line at some point

- Good pick; Chi really needs OL help.

15. Detroit Lions - CB Aqib Talib, Kansas – If the Lions do not complete a trade for Lito Sheppard look for them to upgrade their secondary here, if the Sheppard trade does happen look for the Lions to grab an OT.

- I agree with a defensive player at this pick. A LB like Rivers or Conner makes sense since they traded for Bodden. I could also see them taking Stewart or Mendenhall of they don't see a LB/CB of value.

16. Arizona Cardinals - CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida - Yet another team that could be in the mix for Sheppard, if nothing happens look for them to get the speedster out of SF.

- I would be shocked if either Stewart or Mendenhall are on the board and they don't take one. This team has had a problem running the ball for a long time. James wasn't the solution and doesn't have a lot of miles left. This team has said they are looking for offensive firepower with this pick.

Go ahead and rip it :moneybag:

2nd half to follow later today or tomorrow
Really solid job; seem my comments above. Most mocks are looking very similiar right now; I gaurantee a lot will change in the next month and a half. I always look forward to Rick Gosselin's mocks because he really seems to guage the value of players better than just about any other expert out there.

Yeah i think the Bills reach every year, thus their reach at TE. As for the Vikings I already have DH penciled in at 17 :lmao:
The Bills reach every year, huh? I think you can only call a first round pick a "reach" so lets look at the last 5 years of first rounders for Buffalo.2007: 1.12 Marshawn Lynch--hardly a reach, the guy is a stud

2006: 1.8 Dante Whitner--very solid starter. Will likely get a couple of Pro Bowls before his career is over

2006: 1.26 John McCargo--decent player, some injury problems, will perform much better in rotation with S Johnson

2005: No First round pick--traded away

2004: 1.13 Lee Evans--guys a very very good WR and could be a stud once consistent QB play comes along.

2004: 1.22 J.P. Losman--didn't pan out but can't say he's a reach

2003: 1.23 Willis McGahee--very good player even though he's a whiny biotch

Of all these picks, I would say McCargo is the only guy you can really call a reach and its a marginal call.

The Bills will be drafting a WR or DB with pick 11. There is no way in hell that they take a TE in the first round.

If the Falcons plan to take Ryan they should swap picks with the Jets. The Falcons would get Ryan cheaper and the Jets are guaranteed McFadden.

That could really backfire if the Chiefs view Ryan as a franchise QB.

Yeah i think the Bills reach every year, thus their reach at TE. As for the Vikings I already have DH penciled in at 17
The Bills reach every year, huh?

All were considered draft day reaches
So I see you subscribe to the Mel Kiper draft day dictionary. A reach is someone who is drafted and likely would have been available at the team's next pick. Only McCargo falls into that scenario.

Go ahead and rip it :)

I disagree with line of thinking..."Reaching" is different to everyone, but for me it is about 15-20 picks worth.

Can't hate on anybody's mock, but I will say I don't think Groves is a good fit for the Jags. They already have a few tweener DE/LB edge guys, what they're seeking is an every down defensive lineman in this draft. They have some ammo with the Stroud trade with the Bills, so I imagine they'll trade up to take a DE like Campbell, Merling or Harvey, Campbell being the best fit imho. I could also see them potentially taking a LT or DT.

McGahee was the ADP of his draft; he was coming off a serious injury and it was unlikely he would play his rookie year, but his college production and his physical ability were freakish. I don't think I would call that a reach at the end of the first round; risky, perhaps, a reach, no.

Spending a 1st round pick on a guy that teams know will miss his rookie season due to injury is a reach. IMO

By so-called "experts" who are so smart they never get the draft right. If they're so talented they should be working for NFL teams. Not making predictions that are obviously way off. Lynch a reach? Gimme a break. Whitner was considered a reach, what now? McCargo I can see you on. Lee Evans was a reach? How did that turn out. McGahee turned into an excellent back. So where did the team mess up? JP Losman, John McCargo. 2 out of 6. I think the "hey it's the Bills" comment should have been saved for the Lions..

Sorry but Whitner was the first DB taken in that class and he has had two picks in two years. It was a reach then and he would be 4th or 5th DB taken from this class if the draft was redone. Sorry but McGahee was a reach, he wasnt projected until the second maybe third round. While the Bills were waiting for McGahee to get healthy (and they already had Travis Henry) the lost out on players such as Larry Johnson and Dallas Clarke who went right after Buffalo's Pick.

definitely won't rip your work. Especially since I've not managed to even try one myself. The only pick I really couldn't see happening is the Dan Conner to Carolina. They spent a 1st on Beason last year and a 1st on Thomas Davis a couple years ago. I would be surprised to see them burn another 1st on a LB here. I could see them going after a DE. Saw a mock earlier where they took Jonathan Stewart. pretty surprising, but it would give them the big back they've been missing since Stephen Davis left. (sorry just not a supported of DeAngelo)

overall nice work though.

Yeah, the picks that I think are the most out there are the Bills (a reach for a te early), Denvers (now that they signed Boss) and the Panthers. I doubt the Panthers take Conner, however I think a combo of Beason at MLB and Conner at OLB would be insane. If Peppers gets back to his usual form the Carolina defense would be great in the box.

10. New Orleans Saints - CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee State - They add Vilma and now one of the top corners in the draft, look out for the Aints!
I just don't see this happening any more. They added Gay. McKenzie's recovery is coming along. David is getting used to the system in place. With Fred Thomas gone, that leaves Craft, Young and even Kaesverharn. Honestly, while not totally thrilled, I'm pretty comfortable with that in place. This draft is loaded with CBs and I expect someone to slip into R2. They'll grab a CB in R2.There is little doubt that the Saints will go defense in the draft. They added McCray this week in addition to LB's Vilma and Morgan. I think they're looking for an aggressive front seven this year. People forget that the Saints didn't get their first sack until week 5 against David Carr and the Panthers. This meant they were unable to pressure the QB into quick or bad throws. This left the backfield playing man-to-man far too long and created coverage break downs. I think they'll go Safety or DT in R1. Bullocks isn't starter material. Harper is ok. Kaesviharn replaced Bullocks down the stretch. As far as DT goes, they re-signed the under appreciated Brian Young last week. Hollis Thomas has a few yeares left on his contract but he's getting up there in age.If either of these positions presents itself as available then I expect the Saints to make a play. KPhillips seems to be the guy who slips down to them a 1.10. If Dorsey were available, though, they'd grab him in a heartbeat...

I think you are at least half a round early for Fred Davis. The Bronco's are going to sign Boss Bailey to play OLB and have desperate needs at OT and DT. Being there is no DT worthy at that point I see them taking an OT or trading up for Ellis or Dorsey. The Broncos are not afraid of trading up.Also the Vikings have a huge need for a pass rushing DE-Derrick Harvey.
Yeah i think the Bills reach every year, thus their reach at TE. As for the Vikings I already have DH penciled in at 17
The Bills reach every year, huh?

All were considered draft day reaches
It was a reach then and he would be 4th or 5th DB taken from this class if the draft was redone. there are different ways to define "reach"... if you mean in conventional sense of a consensus reach, than i definitely don't think all these players were reaches...marshawn lynch was a consensus top 2 RB... i don't recall any of the draft coverage claiming emphatically it was a bad pick... some drafts have about a half dozen (give or take a few) elite players, & than the next 10-15-20 not as distinguishable, other than teams having more of a pressing positional need...

whitner & mccargo were admittedly biggest reaches as far as reporting from pundits... though nfl.com scout mike mayock called this pick leading up to the draft, & i think called it a slight reach... not to mention, the rams were said to be looking at him few picks later, so if he would have gone around 11-12, instead of where he did (8-9?), can it really be called that massive a reach when he could very easily have gone a few picks later? whitner may not exactly be compiling hall of fame INT stats so far in his career, but that doesn't he can't have an outstanding career... rams safety OJ atogwe tied for NFC lead in '07 with 8, & i would trade him for whitner in a heart beat... whitner is a far more reliable open field tackler...

i think you would have a hard time showing any kind of reporting from the time saying evans was a bad pick (don't make me dig out my old scouting guides from that year :) )... some of the WRs picked first were larry fitzgerald & roy williams (pretty good WRs at top of class), he was taken close to same point as reggie williams & michael clayton, & at this point we would have to say evans has had the superior career so far (clayton had one good year but has inexplicably disintegrated) & has superior upside to those two... later WRs were michael jenkins & rashaun woods, who haven't really distinguished themselves (woods is out of the league already)... before hurting his knee in his soph/junior (?) year at wisconsin, some scouts graded him as one of the top few prospects in the nation... not just at WR, but at any position. how much would evans fetch on the open market if he is turned loose next season (or how much will it costy to reup)... i don't think there is much doubt that evans is viewed, within & without the organization, as an elite WR, & he will soon be paid accordingly...

losman was mentioned as one of top QBs in his class that year... where he went, about last third of round one, is about where he might have been expected to land, given everything that had been reported & was known at that point... could he have gone a few picks later? sure, just like he could have been picked a few picks earlier & it wouldn't have come as a huge shock...

mcgahee could be called a reach, because he was injured*... but nobody questioned his talent before injury, & we have to assume the bills medical staff had access to his medical records, so the projection on how quickly he would return & how close to being all the way back may not have been as big a gamble for them as it may have seemed to casual observers... absolutely some teams probably wouldn't have touched him until round 2-3... but given how dominant he was at miami, if you thought he would be OK & you could afford to redshirt him for a season (i think they had travis henry at time), i could definitely make a case for taking him where they did... i agree with poster upthread that it may have been risky & a gamble, but based on talent, not a reach... it is also tough to say picking a RB who wouldn't play right away was a reach, & than illustrating point with larry johnson, picked shortly after, another RB who sat behind priest holmes & didn't play right away? mcgahee just signed a lucrative contract last season in BAL, so at least in the opinion of the ravens, who voted with their dollars, he is an upper echelon RB with upside...

* for instance, where was mcgahee projected to go, BEFORE injury... top 5... top 3, overall?
