Building a brick smoker in the back yard (1 Viewer)

Mad Cow

Welshers and Dawdlers Beware!
I am sure there are FBG's that have done this. I am ready to see if I can graduate from the old WSM and try my hand at building one at home. Anyone have any resources to look at? I would like to combine it with a fire pit for family use, etc.

There are some pretty elaborate designs out there, but figure as simple as possible to get a good job done.

Thinking about the WIlbur D Hog style pit?
Icon knows this but to be sure it's said - the Wilbur Hog pit is cool but it's a very specific type of pit that is different than what most people do. (Direct heat over coals vs indirect over burning wood).

Keep us posted on how this goes though as it's an awesome project.

Sorry yeah I should have been more clear. That is a carolina style pit. If you're looking for an indirect heat you could make some pretty simple design modifications to that style pit to accommodate it.

I am used to cooking with my WSM - suggest for me the style that would most easily translate.

I don't know you're going to find a lot like that. WSM is pretty specific and I'm not sure how well it translates to a brick pit. You see a lot more offset horizontal type brick pits.

My one advice would be to keep your options open and try not to paint yourself into corners. I'd build the pit out of loose brick or cinder block with no mortar to test out things temporarily. Figure out what dimensions work and all that before you build it for permanent with brick and mortar.

Things like firebox size, cooking grate size and distance from grate to heat source are going to be things you really have to nail down. And you get pretty much one chance to get that right with a brick pit.

How feasible would it be to have the offset portion double as a fire pit for family use? Have a cover or what not to put in place for indirect?
