Buy low: Pierre Thomas (1 Viewer)

Mike Bell is here to stay. I'm not saying he's not gonna get his share of carries. Plus Bell seems to be the goalline back. That being said I think Thomas is an excellent Buy Low right now. I think one can get him fairly cheaply and he will be a solid RB2 down the stretch with RB1 upside and a few RB1 type games. here are my reasons:

1. Look at this schedule thru Week 17 (if you play that far into the season).

vs. ATLANTA FALCONS

vs. CAROLINA PANTHERS

@ ST. LOUIS RAMS

@ TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

vs. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

@ WASHINGTON REDSKINS

@ ATLANTA FALCONS

vs. DALLAS COWBOYS

vs. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

@ CAROLINA PANTHERS

Only two tough matchup remaining (NE & DAL) and NO should be able to run the ball down the throats of all the other opponents. The Saints have been content with running the ball this year and Thomas is good for 15 touches even in a full fledged RBBC.

2. Thomas will still get his share of TDs. He is more explosive than Bell and will break off some long runs. Just cuz a guy isnt the goalline back doesnt mean he wont score TDs (see Chris Johnson & Ray Rice).

3. Mike Bell seems to be the goalline back but Sean Peyton seems to have a propensity of not having roles for players. He'll mix and match guys in and out of the lineup based on play call, hunch, matchups, whatever. As a matter of fact Pierre Thomas has been in on the goalline (with the 5 yd line) a number of times over the last two weeks. I dont think Peyton really has a designated goalline back. He'll probably go with Bell more often but dont be shocked if Thomas gets a few goalline touches as well.

4. Thomas still seems to be the "redzone" back. He can bust off 15 yd TD runs with no problem.

5. Finally if Bell gets hurt or starts fumbling Thomas instantly becomes a top RB1.

I think the upside is there for people to trade for Thomas. Its high risk but also very high reward IMO. Sure he'll have an occasional stinker when Bell is the hot hand or when they cant run the ball but looking at that schedule I dont see much of a problem for them running the ball and EVEN if Bell is the hot hand Thomas will still get his touches.

Unless you're in a large league, both Thomas and Bell are nothing but bye-week-fillers and bench players unless one of them gets injured.

If one was injured (regardless of who) the other would immediately be a top 5-7 option in the league.

As is, you always take the chance that the 'other one' had the hot hand and goty more carries or got the goal line work.

In 8 and 10 team leagues, they're both junk right now.

Don't know too many that play in 8 or 10 man leagues, but I guess they'd both be #3s there. There will be a lot of points scored out of the NO backfield going forward. PT doesn't seem to have a monopoly on those points anymore. However, I truly believe he'll be a solid #2 RB in 12 man leagues from here on out. I think we've seen the floor for PT over the last two weeks. That offense scores on everyone, and PT will get his share of the TDs before the season is over. Reggie Bush seems to be the one that has lost all value. Pretty tough to be a consistent contributor when you get 7 touches/game.

It depends on what your other options are. They both can be used as a flex or RB3 because NO will always score and that means they always have a chance. My opinion is that if PT will get the first chance in a game and if he doesn't struggle he will do well. If he does then Bell will get a shot. This is no different than the other boom or bust WRs and RBs that people play with. I don't see PTs value going down from where it is this week unless they switch over to Bell as the primary ball carrier. If you think that is going to happen then avoid him and try to get Bell.

NYG and Miami are among the toughest rushing D's in the league. Pierre's been frustrating because he's shown bursts of greatest right after coming back from the injury then had a few clunkers, but that was because of who they were playing. I think teams who have stuck with Pierre up until now are about to be rewarded. He's seemingly healthy and those brick wall run D's are in the rear view mirror.

I totally agree with this. Pierre and/or Bell will be solid going forward now that those 2 tough rushing D's are behind them. Pierre looked frustrated when Bell got in the 2nd half. I know he's the better/more complete back, and he showed flashes when given the slightest hole. I have to be honest thought - Bell does give them a straight ahead look that is different than Pierre's shiftiness. He can really mix things up - so I might have to eat crow and say this will be a bigtime RBBC. Hoping not though - was so much easier when one was injured (I own both).

One of the only drawbacks I see with your premise is what if they beat Atlanta next week at home and start on the path to wrapping things up early? Will they start resting guys? Run even more? Still pretty early to talk about that type of stuff, but they are 6-0 with Atlanta, Carolina at home, then STL on the road then TBay. Not real hard to see them at 10-0 before facing NE at home.

I wouldn't worry about them resting players yet.. Way too early.. If the Vikes can get past the Packers this weekend which will be tough. They have Detroit,Seattle & Chicago at home their next 3 games.. Vikes will most likely be 9-2 after 11 games..

Fair enuf, I was just throwing it out there.

the fact that mike bell didn't see the field until late in the 3rd quarter was the only positive fact from yesterday's game. i wish i would have traded thomas before the season.

I don't think he was worth a whole lot more before the season. Few knew of the offensive juggernaut that NO would become. I think he's worth more now than he did before the season, but less than he did during his BYE week, 2 weeks ago.I prefer to have a long term view, and I see PT as a solid dynasty "BUY" at this moment.

not in a dynasty league. only keep 10. i think i could have played up the last 6 games of last year and gotten a lot more than i could get now. i send out an e-mail almost every week looking to make trades. i got ZERO offers last week when i mentioned thomas' name.

It depends on how low you mean by low. But sure if the price was right I would stash him away and hope for a Bell injury.
would you guys trade a 1st rd pick for Pierre/Bell? I honestly think this is too much as Bush has the 3rd down duties and the 2 are splitting time in a maddening situation so there is no telling who will ever get the ball.

Depends where the 1st rounder is likely to be. I'd gladly trade a late 1st for Thomas/Bell. A top-5 pick would be tough and a top-3 pick would be too much. Of course, I don't think very much at all about the 2010 draft class.

Hope you guys listened
guy taken in 1st 3 rounds... not like anyone was gonna give him up bc they gave up on him few weeks in.. come on now. No way you could get him that "cheap" esp. when he plays on most high powered offense in NFL.

As long as the Saints are scoring 30ppg, there's no reason PT can't be a high-end RB2 and no reason Bell can't be a RB3/FLEX from here on out.

Somebody tell me what Mike Bell brings to the table that Pierre Thomas doesn't already do. Usually in a RBBC both RBs bring something different table. Payton must not believe Pierre can take the pounding of 20 touches a game. Otherwise Mike Bell getting more touches than Pierre makes little sense to me. It obvious Pierre is the more talented more versatile RB.

An excellent ability to fumble during the most inopportune times. But in all seriousness, I dont see it. Mike Bell is a cannonball of a runner but when he's on the field, the opposing team knows what's going to happen, a ball of fury that'll pound out 3-5 yards. When Pierre is in there, who knows? Could be a run inside, could be a kick-out, could be a swing pass, could be long passing routes....

That box is checked in both columns. But I agree, Pierre just seems always on the verge of breaking something big, while Bell is going to richochet through about 5 defenders for 5 yards.

Exactly. Its not Pierre can't pound for those 3-5 yards as well. He is just a hard a runner as Bell is, and he does many more things. Its just funny to me that the most powerful offense in the league has Mike Bell carrying the ball 17 times.

I agree that PT is the better back but Mike Bell is useful as well. He brought a spark to the saints offense when he came on the field during the second half last week at Miami. He was the more physical of the two runners and it showed. PT couldn't get anything going and Bell led them down the field.

:hophead: Well said.

Would be nice if it changed, but, at minimum, this falls under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory. Would be great to be RB1 numbers from Pierre, but if he keeps producing like last night (and getting shares the goal line work, most importantly), hard to complain.

But, if Payton's monitoring, how 'bout a 2/3 1/3 split, with Pierre getting the former :goodposting:

Yeah, never mind the fact that Allen blew out his ACL in the third quarter and as a result Bell didn't see the 7 and 8 man fronts PT did in the first half. That couldn't have possibly had anything to do with it, could it?

Without making this an AFC question, what is PT's value right now? I'm looking to buy and have the PT owner very interested.

I agree with the solid dynasty BUY (even though I drafted him). It's funny, I'm reading this and have him in the first year of a 10 team full dynasty league. With him, Mendenhall, Donald Brown and MJD (Caddy and Moats rounding out the 6), I consider him the RB3 every week going forward and strong potential to be solid RB2 next year.

Traded for PT twice in the last 10hrs in both of my dynastys.

One deal i offered McCoy straight up for him, i already had Bell, not to mention AP/Chesta Fitz Colsten Boldin Ohco to name a few.

Other deal i offered M.Ryan Moreno/Buck C.henry and Olsen for Sanchez PT/Bell and Gates. (maybe gave up alot there but i like his stretch run alot)
