Probably not much of a surprise...

Houston facing MRI on injured knee; Coles OK

Jets running back Cedric Houston suffered what is believed to be a hyperextended left knee late in the third quarter of yesterday's 31-28 loss to the Colts at Giants Stadium. He will undergo an MRI today, according to someone with knowledge of his medical status.

That person requested anonymity because of the Jets' policy against releasing injury information. It's not known how long Houston will be sidelined.

Houston, a second-year pro, was hurt when he was hit by Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney on a third-and-goal from the 2-yard line. He laid on the field several minutes before being helped to the sideline and carted into the locker room. He was unable to put any pressure on the knee.

Despite leaving early, the hard-running Houston still finished as the Jets' leading rusher with 49 yards on 12 carries. After being inactive the first two games, he appeared on his way to challenging Kevan Barlow for the starting job.

Overall, the Jets running back-by-committee approach netted 135 yards on 37 carries against the Colts' porous run defense, with Houston, Barlow (13-35-2) and rookie Leon Washington (9-33-0) leading the way. Barlow's two TDs give him four this season.

Although he appeared badly injured at the time, wide receiver Laveranues Coles seemed fine after the game despite being shaken up on the final play.

The Jets' surprise onside kick early in the second quarter was recovered on a room-service bounce by safety Kerry Rhodes at the Jets' 43-yard line. The play led directly to a one-yard TD run by Barlow for a 14-7 lead.

"We saw on the film they lined up a little deeper than usual," Rhodes said. "Coach (Mike Westhoff) said we were going to do it in this game but I didn't believe him. He did it and it worked. It got us seven points."

Rookie LTD'Brickashaw Ferguson held Colts Pro Bowl DE Dwight Freeney sackless but gave up a strip sack to Colts DE Robert Mathis that led to an Indianapolis TD less than three minutes into the game.

Mathis beat Ferguson on a speed move to the outside on the game's second play and hit Chad Pennington on the blind side and he fumbled. The Colts recovered at the Jets' 26-yard line.

"Robert Mathis is an excellent player," Ferguson said. "He hit me with a nice move. Maybe with better technique I would've been able to fix that. Things like that you'd like to change and maybe it would've made a ripple effect."

Even so, Ferguson recovered nicely and didn't allowed another sack.

"I know there are a lot of guys depending on me," Ferguson said. "I have 10 other guys, the whole offense, the coaching staff. I can't allow that one play to throw off my whole game. I just have to move on and just make sure I don't get beaten on that same move again."

Pennington earned kudos from Colts QB Peyton Manning on how he ran the no-huddle offense. In one instance, Pennington forced the Colts to call a timeout and Manning was caught on-camera shaking his head in admiration.

"They obviously did a good job," Manning said. "They caught us with some substitutions. They cost us some timeouts. They kept the tempo up. They put a lot of pressure on our defense."

DE Shaun Ellis had two sacks and finished with five tackles. It was his first two sacks of the season.... LBs Jonathan Vilma and Eric Barton tied for the team lead in tackles with 11.... As expected, RB Derrick Blaylock was deactivated for a second consecutive game.... Rookie LB Anthony Schlegel, a third-round pick out of Ohio State, was inactive for the fourth straight game even though the Jets signed two one LBs this week, one of whom (Cody Spencer) was activated.

Hyperextension is obviously much better than torn ACL.. here's to hoping he makes it back on the field quickly
