Caldwell To Coach Lions (1 Viewer)

A guy that led his team to 14-0 and to a super bowl in his rookie season gets zero respect by fans, which is amazing.

But I'm in agreement with the general consensus. This guy, to me, looked absolutely clueless on the sidelines.

Baltimore radio has been speculating that Caldwell would not be brought back as the OC because he was so terrible. So the Lions run out and hire that guy.

:lmao:

Who will the Lions take with the 1st pick next year? Can you draft coaches? While Caldwell was not dealt the best hand with Manning going down and Painter and Kerry Collins as the replacements, he could not have been the best option.

Very worried Reggie Bush owner seeing what happened to the Ravens running game last year. How much blame does Caldwell get for that?
Honestly I think that is because Flacco is not very good, Rice looks to have lost a step already, they traded their starting WR and leader in Boldin and Pitta was hurt. While I do not like Caldwell, I think blame is put on him more than should.

Hasn't he already sucked as a head coach? I don't get the recycling of coaches. Why not give some new blood a chance?

:lmao:

There are at least 4 coordinators that are not yet available, all better than Caldwell. But the Lions can't wait to hire this guy? 6 ####### days and they'll be able to interview more people.

well he lost in the sb as a rookie head coach

made the playoffs in year 2

and then shyt the bed with manning.

i guess its hard to really say, cause he was first dealt a stacked hand,, then a crap hand

So Detroit abandons the defensive guy for the offensive guy.

Caldwell did get a team to the SB with a 12-0 (?) or so start, and he OC'd many great Colts offenses.

And he was interviewed by at least 3 teams.

No one really knows how this will turn out. It's just not going to excite any Lions fans.

That's typical Baltimore sports radio. They know how much the Ravens offense picked up when they fired Cameron and hired Caldwell. But as soon as they believe Caldwell's leaving it's "oh, he stunk".

Dungy himself pretty much said that he's only as good of a coach as the players he's dealt.

The "good news" is Stafford is no Manning so there will be less of a cliff to fall off of.

To play devil's advocate:

1. Caldwell took a team to the Super Bowl before. Sure, it was a loaded team, but that's still not easy to do. Dungy got the Colts there once in 7 years. Caldwell did it once in 3 years.

2. Caldwell did suck as Ravens OC this year, but he had never been an OC before. He was always either QB coach or head coach, and was reluctant to take the promotion the Ravens gave him. And he still won a Super Bowl as OC.

3. The story about his interview with the Lions, how he broke down all of Stafford's throws from 2013 and had a plan for how to correct his issues, that was encouraging. He's got a good record with QBs and I think that part of the job he will handle well.

That said, I share some of the same concerns as everyone else. But we'll see how it goes. It's the Lions. Lions fans should know by now not to get their hopes up about anything anyway.

how can the whole world see this is a terrible hire decision, yet the lions went ahead and did it anyway. Sheesh
Fixed, and now it fits just about everything the Lion's have done in my 25+ years of following them. I really wish I was one of those guys that can just abandon the home team and root for someone else, the years upon years of piss poor decisions are really wearing me down.

Please see the Ravens offensive statistics in 2013. That he stunk is not really up for debate.

Worst HC I have ever seen. Guy was a buffoon running the Colts into the ground. That SB trip was a joke, Manning did everything there. Caldwell lasted 3 seasons?

Terrible hire, very sad day for Detroit fans IMO, sorry.

3 of the 4 head coaches who will be coaching next weekend have been fired from an NFL head coaching job before. 2 of those 3 really didn't have much success until their current job.

Please see them in 2012 before and after Caldwell replaced Cameron. Fill us in on that.

Then lose Boldin and have the entire offensive line collapse, and tell me about 2013.

Good record with QBs? I give no credit to him for Peyton. The year after he left Tampa, Brad Johnson went to the pro bowl, and Flacco actually got worse with him. He did coordinate in the Super Bowl run, so he gets some credit there, but there were MUCH better candidates out there.

Grew up in Detroit as a Lions fan. Since that time I've lived in Chiefs country and now in Panthers country. Having seen competent front offices and actually GOOD coaches, it's easier for me to be done with the Lions. Pathetic franchise. I would like to see them succeed, but won't count on it during Ford's lifetime.

There offense wasn't that much better after he took over.

Jesus, chill with the hyperbole. There's been way worse coaches out there. Caldwell took a Super Bowl caliber team to the Super Bowl. Ray Handley took a Super Bowl caliber team to 8-8 and then 6-10.

And it's not a sad day for Lions fans. What's Caldwell going to do, ruin their proud tradition of success? Worst case scenario, they keep losing, which was probably going to happen no matter who they hired.

He can't be worse than Schwartz
People should stop bashing a guy who turned an 0-16 team around into a playoff contender, I think this is a downgrade for sure.
Detroit fans seem to hate him. Not only that but media like RW & PFT kept suggesting he was just being interviewed to satisfy the RR.

But I agree that it's unfair to bash him completely, he did some good things, especially establish that defense. IMO he needed a better OC.

Caldwell got to coach with Peyton Manning and Curtis Painter at QB, I mean who really know what he will do with a very talented but neither HOF great or horrendous QB, my guess is they are in store for some seasons between 6-10 and 9-7. They had better bring in someone good at DC to continue building that defense though, they are 2-3 players away from being fearsome.
