Calling all Doctors and Trainers - high ankle sprains.. (1 Viewer)

Boldin is apparently going to try to play through a high ankle spraing that his doctor advised would require 3-4 weeks of rest.

Rotoworld: "Anquan Boldin admits that he is dealing with a high ankle sprain, and was originally told by doctors that the injury would cost him 3-4 weeks. Boldin is willing to play through the injury...."

A. Has anyone to your knowledge ever successfully done this?

B. Without rest and rehab, will the condition continue to get even more aggravated?

Frank Gore tried it on week 3...with disastrous results for his Fantasy owners.....
that was a new injury
I just went back and checked the Friday September 25 injury reportFrank Gore was listed as a limited participant in Wed, Thurs, and Friday's practices because of an ankle injury...then he went ahead and started the game on Sunday and reaggravated it on the 49ers first possesion.....

There is a reason that many consider a high ankle sprain is worse than a break. No idea if that's the case here.

And :porked: to those who said Boldin was soft.

A) Depends on your definition of success. The player will not be 100%.....not even close. It obviously will depend on how severe the high ankle sprain. But I know of D1 players trying and they struggle and eventually sit out games. They just can't be effective to the point they need to be.B)Don't know. Can't imagine it getting better though.

If it helps you judge a little better... I'm an average athletic guy... I play pickup basketball, football games whenever I can, go to the gym about 3 days a week. I obviously don't train like an NFL player, nor do I have the training staff but I was playing basketball in July when I came down with a rebound and suffered a pretty bad high ankle sprain. I was on crutches for about 2 weeks, couldn't run/jump/power walk until well into September. Like I said, I'm an average male, but man those things are tricky and painful.

If it is a true "high ankle sprain," he probably won't be very effective or last very long. His ankle will be so heavily taped and braced that simple cutting will be very difficult, and hid ability to push off that foot will also be greatly affected. Essentially, he shouldn't be too difficult to cover from a defensive standpoint. If he ignored all if his pain and forced through it, he could definitely cause more damage, but I think he'll be off the field before that occurs. If I had him, he'd be on my bench without any second thoughts.

High ankle sprains hurt. A lot. The one time I got one I was able to play through the game (basketball) on the adrenaline but after that it was a few weeks of pain just walking even.

That being said, I'm sure that while I think of myself as definitely not soft, I'm pretty sure Anquan Boldin is a much tougher dude than I am. I still think he'll be limited, but if he can get it going and get that adrenaline rush, it won't limit him as much because it covers up the pain.

I'm not sure how you "play through it" without continually aggravating it. I'm sure some cortisone, a pain shot and a good ankle taping would allow someone to play on it, but you're never going to get better that way.

Just FYI, here is the answer I got from google on high ankle sprains:

What is a "high ankle sprain?"A high a sprain is used to describe a particular type of ankle injury. Normally, when someone sprains their ankle, the ligaments that surround the ankle joint are stretched or torn. This injury causes pain and swelling around the ankle, and can be quite uncomfortable.A high ankle sprain injures the large ligament above the ankle that joins together the two bones of the lower leg. These two bones, the tibia (shin bone) and fibula, run from the knee down to the ankle. They are joined together by this ligament called the "syndesmosis" or "sydesmotic ligament."Patients who sustain a high ankle sprain injure this syndesmotic ligament. The ligament can also be an associated injury with more common low ankle sprains, and even ankle fractures. What are the symptoms of a high ankle sprain?A high ankle sprain causes symptoms similar to other ankle sprains, but patients often complain of pain when the ankle is externally rotated (turned to the outside) or when the calf is squeezed. This later finding, the so-called "squeeze test," is the classic test for syndesmotic injuries, but it is not very reliable for diagnosis. How is a high ankle sprain diagnosed? When a syndesmotic injury is suspected, your doctor can obtain special x-ray studies of the ankle called stress views. The ankle will usually look normal on routine x-rays even with a syndesmotic injury, but when stressed, there is abnormal motion between the bones the syndesmotic ligament connects. What is the treatment for a high ankle sprain?Syndesmotic injuries tend not to heal as well as more common ankle sprain, that is why trainers and coaches of athletes are often concerned about "high ankle sprains." Your orthopedic doctor will first determine if the injury is stable or unstable. If the injury is stable, then the high ankle sprain can be treated in a cast, usually for a period of 6 weeks. If the injury is unstable, then a "syndesmotic screw" can be placed between the tibia and fibula to hold the bones in proper position while the syndesmotic ligament heals. The are several methods of fixation of syndesmotic injuries, all with potential risks and benefits. It is a relatively safe and well-tolerated surgical procedure.

in 2002 - Deuce McCallister played the week after getting a high ankle sprain and ran for over 100 yards and 3 scores.

That was the only time I ever heard prior to 2002 and post 2002 of a player playing on a HAS an doing well.

I'm not about to say that he'll be able to pull it off, but I don't know that I'm willing to say he can't either. This is the same guy who only missed a couple weeks after having his face peeled back and screws inserted a year ago.

I have him in one league, and I'm sitting him only because I also have Breaston, but I won't be surprised in the least if he plays tomorrow. Q is just a flat-out bada**.

1979 Jack Youngblood played both playoff games, Super Bowl XIV and even the Pro Bowl with a fractured left fibula.

Makes a high ankle sprain sound girly.

Yeah that was the early speculation but it wasnt correct
Running back Frank Gore nursed a right ankle injury last week, taking part in limited practice. On the first play on which he touched the ball, Gore came up hobbling. But 49ers coach Mike Singletary says the injury sustained early in the game Sunday against the Vikings is not related to Gore's pre-existing condition. We're trying to get official word from the 49ers' medical staff.
