Calvin Johnson Injury (1 Viewer)

 <---Black dot in case any injury news gets posted in this thread. Oh and by the way, I'm a first time Megatron owner and I am THRILLED with his production so far!

IF Calvin misses this week, does it make Burleson a sneaky play?
I think it might help the TEs more. Who knows?
I think so too. And they would be the only ones I'd upgrade.
Thirded. I think Hill would lean on Pettigrew and Scheffler more than he already has, possibly more of Best out of the backfield as well. I do not think it benefits Burleson should Calvin miss the game in New York. Hopefully the MRI results are excellent and we won't have to find out.

I sat him vs gb. For Santana moss, who took a fat 0. If Calvin's in the lineup vs. NYG, he's in my lineup. Not that anyone cares about my team.

Completely disagree, the reason why the te's are open is because of megatron. Bump nate imo

From Tom Kowalski:

TomKowalski36: Calvin Johnson practices, but no passes thrown to him .. he's favoring right shoulder, but he's out there .. right now, i'd say questionable.

I did the same thing and feel the same way!

MLive.com reports that Lions WR Calvin Johnson was present at the media portion of practice on Wednesday. No passes were thrown his way and he was visibly favoring his injured right shoulder.

This is interesting. Obviously they want him to stay in game shape and prepare as to play Sunday. If he had structural damage, I doubt he would be on the field, risking further injury. I would say this will be a GTD.

Fantasy Analysis

Johnson hurt his shoulder in a Week 5 rout of the Rams and didn't return as the Lions were up big. This injury will have to be watched closely over the next few days, especially as a big physical receiver like Johnson could re-injure his shoulder very easily. With a Week 7 bye, the Lions might just choose to rest Megatron this weekend and give him two weeks to heal up, but we'll have to wait and see. When healthy, Johnson is a must-start Fantasy option.

Being a frequent gulper of CJ Kool-Aid (and a current CJ Owner in a redraft league) I am sitting him against NYG unless he is reported to be snaring passes in practice. The Lions have a bye next week and they have used CJ as a high-priced decoy in the past when he had no real business being on the field. Nothing wrong with the wheels so I could easily see the Lions having him run around out there simply to absorb coverage.

If he is out.. I think the sneaky play here is Pettigrew. He has been quietly putting up some pretty decent numbers in recent weeks.

Week 1: 1/6

Week 2: 7/108

Week 3: 6/44

Week 4: 8/91

Week 5: 4/26/1

Sheffler has also been decent with the following stats:

Week 1: 6/43

Week 2: 1/5

Week 3: 7/60/1

Week 4: 6/63

Week 5: 4/41

Both TEs are tied for second in targets from Shaun Hill at 25 apiece over the last 3 weeks. Sheffler has been more a factor in the redzone and actually leading Detriot in redzone targets at 6, whereas Pettigrew has 4 targets in the redzone. From the Goal line targets, Pettigrew has 2 targets compared to Sheffler's 1 target.

Some little known stats. After San Diego, Detroit is the second best team in the NFL in producing fantasy TE points. While the NYG are a tough defense against the pass, they are easier to pass againts in the TE area rather than the WR area. To me, this is going to allow some openings in the short passing game.

IMO, Pettigrew has incredible talent in his receiving skills across the middle and in short yardage. He gives Hill a big target to throw to and should be a solid play. At 25 targets over the last 3 weeks, he is avg 8 targets per game and turning ~ 72% into receptions. So my expectations would be 5-7 receptions 50-60 yds and a TD.

Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson still limited in practice

ALLEN PARK - For the second straight day, Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson (right shoulder) was at practice and running routes but he wasn't getting much done. Unlike Wednesday, Johnson had a few light passes tossed his way today, but he was clearly still favoring his shoulder.

There's still no telling whether Johnson will actually play in Sunday's game against the Giants. If it's just a pain thing, and pain killer can be used, he'll likely play. If there's some damage in there and playing could aggravate or worsen his condition, the odds are very thin that he'll play.

Matthew Stafford (right shoulder) did not practice today - nor did cornerback Nathan Vasher (biceps) and linebackers Landon Johnson (concussion) and DeAndre Levy (ankle).

The Lions placed linebacker Spencer Havner on the injured reserve/waived list and signed linebacker Vinny Ciurciu, who was released in training camp.

Straight from Rotoworld:

Calvin Johnson (shoulder) was able to catch some passes in Thursday's practice but was doing so mostly with his left arm.

He's still favoring his right shoulder. At this point it seems probable that he'll sit out in Week 6, especially since the Lions are idle in Week 7. He's likely to be a game-time decision, at best.

per cbs it don't look good

Lions WR Calvin Johnson (right shoulder) was limited at practice for a second straight session Thursday. MLive.com reports that Johnson was still favoring his shoulder as a few passes were thrown his way.

(Updated 10/14/2010).

Analysis

At this point, Johnson looks highly unlikely to play in Week 6 as he couldn't even lift his arm on Wednesday and clearly didn't do much more on Thursday. If you were planning on using Megatron on Sunday, you should probably start looking elsewhere for a WR if you haven't done so already. With a Week 7 bye, the Lions might just choose to rest Megatron this weekend and give him two weeks to heal up, but we'll have to wait and see. When healthy, Johnson is a must-start Fantasy option.

The bye week can go both ways. If there is little risk of further injury why not try to get the win know he will have two weeks to rest? On the other hand if he could hurt it more then the extra weeks rest is wise. Looks like a gtd where they may already know the answer though him catching some passes would seem to say they don't see much risk in putting him out there.

Calvin Johnson, WR DET

News: Lions WR Calvin Johnson’s shoulder looks healthier with each workout. Johnson caught passes Friday with his right hand, something he hasn’t been able to do consistently all week. He doesn’t have full range of motion in the shoulder, but Johnson looks strong enough to play Sunday.

Analysis: Johnson and the Lions will take on the NFL's best defense against the pass in Week 6 when they play the Giants. New York is giving up just 146 yards passing per contest through the first five weeks of the season. Even with that tough matchup, Fantasy owners will be hoping that Johnson can get on the field Sunday and produce some decent numbers, but he's clearly going to be a gameday decision. With a Week 7 bye, the Lions might just choose to rest Megatron this weekend and give him two weeks to heal up, but we'll have to wait and see. When healthy, Johnson is a must-start Fantasy option. If he gets the green light for Week 6, we still like Johnson as a low-end No. 1 WR Fantasy option. We'll be first to know whether or not he'll be active this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.

This is setting off all kind of alarms for me. A 0-catch performance where he runs deep a few times as a decoy looks extremely likely.

He didnt break his collarbone did he?
That crossed my mind in watching the replays, but the trainers looked at the top of his shoulder first, CJ let slip that it was an AC thing after practice Wednesday and additional tests *probably* wouldn't be necessary on a fractured clavicle.

OK, obviously the Schwartz is using this injury one way or the other, but we really don't know which and can't. But there are two possibilities

1. Calvin's injury is worse than being reported and he either won't play, or will be a decoy

2. Calvin's injury isn't that serious, they're intentionally showcasing for reporters to make it seem worse than it is, and Calvin plays full strength Sunday after lulling the Giants to sleep.

1 seems more likely given what we have seen from Schwartz thus far, but if he really needs rest I don't see him playing.

It's a 1pm game, so we should have plenty of time to get him out if he is inactive. I'm thinking if he is active, Burleson might be the play. If he is inactive then the TEs will go nuts, IMO.

This situation is eerily similar to last season's knee injury. What we learned last year is that they will play Calvin though they have no intention of using him to catch passes/he is not healthy enough to play.Too bad too, despite the loss of his QB he was off to a good start.Hoping for the best..

A 0 catch performance seems extremely likely?! Considering he's never had a 0 catch performance in his career I'll take the over. It doesn't make sense for the Lions to start a WR that is unable to lift his arms to catch the football. The Giants would pick up on Calvin's ineffectiveness fairly quickly if that were the case.
Johnson (shoulder) had his most extensive practice of the week Friday, the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett reports.

Spin: After using primarily his left arm to haul in passes Thursday, Johnson seemed to be using both arms more liberally in Friday's practice. This is an encouraging sign for his Week 6 status, but we're still anticipating a questionable tag when the official injury report is released, which would leave Johnson as a player who needs to be monitored closely Sunday morning before he can be a safe lineup option.
He's catching passes with both arms now and it's only Friday. He'll have all day tomorrow and early Sunday to get more treatment on the shoulder. He may not have a monster game, but if he starts it's difficult to leave him on your bench. Never. Ever. Bench Calvin Johnson. Ever.

Calvin Johnson worried rivals may target injured ankle.

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson hasn't ruled out playing Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, but he expressed concern defenses could target his right ankle if he does return before he's healed, Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News reports.

Johnson confirmed Wednesday he is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and even though he's not ready to say he needs to miss games to recover, he did mention he needs rest to be healthy.

"You can't keep on pounding on it and expect it to get better," he said. You want to be smart. You don't want to put yourself in a position where you can't be there for the team when it comes down to it there at the end, and that's why we're trying to be smart about it right now."

Johnson also refuted an NFL Network report his use as a decoy has been frustrating, saying Wednesday was the first time he spoke to any reporters since last Wednesday.

He first suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of the Lions' Week 3 win over the Packers. In a Week 4 win over the Jets, he was a decoy, catching two passes for 12 yards and playing 57 percent of the offensive snaps.

In last week's loss to the Bills, he played most of the first half but didn't have his first catch until the second play of the third quarter. After a 7-yard gain, Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin hit him hard on the right ankle, and Johnson limped off and did not return.

"Who knows?" Johnson said when asked if McKelvin targeted the injury.

But he wouldn't be surprised if other players tried to hit the ankle moving forward.

"I wouldn't doubt it," he said. "Guys try to take guys out of the game if they know they can, especially if you've got a playmaker. Defenses will do that."

Understandable since last week that is exactly what they did. These dumbasses need to make sure the route he runs is one where some ##### defender has to tackle him instead of just diving at his lower legs.

LOL, I know this post is from 4 years ago, but exactly how I feel. First time I have ever owned him and because I drafted in spots right after Forte was gone in PPR, I got Calvin in 2 of 3. It has been really frustrating and pisses me off that they didn't just already sit him. Pretty obvious he was hurt the past two weeks and bad decisions to let him play and obviously get worse.

Jim Caldwell is not the coach I would pick to run my franchise.

Anyone know if Calvin actually had knee surgery in the 2014 offseason???

Calvin Johnson (ankle) is practicing Thursday and suggested a decision on his status could go to Sunday morning.
A day after getting limited work in, Johnson was encouragingly back cutting and running routes. "We're doing everything from straight-forward running to moving laterally as well," he said. "Things are going good. We're moving in a positive direction." We still suspect it makes tons of sense to hold Megatron out of this game and let him rest through the bye, but the Lions aren't tipping their hand yet. This game will kick off in the afternoon in London, meaning word on Johnson's status might not come down until roughly 8:30am ET. Oct 23 - 9:45 AM

They would be foolish to play him this week with a bye week coming up next week. I say sit him two more weeks and unleash him starting week 10.

Because you know more about how Calvin is feeling more than Calvin or the team does, right?

No because he knows, as I do, that Detroit can beat Atlanta without him, so why take a chance. Calvin won't be playing this week simply because they won't need him to win the game.

lol....if he can play, he will go. He has already had two weeks of rest and treatment. There is no game in the NFL when a team can just assume they will win, even with all of their players. Ask Seahawk fans about that. They have had three of those already. To me, it looks like he is getting ready to go.

I really hope he can but the fact is, if they are able to get a lead and cause havoc in the ATL passing game, even if he plays he will be MegaDecoy again.

Of course, if he's suited up then he will see the field and will at a minimum catch one pass to keep the consecutive games with a catch going and I will be forced to start him. I for one absolutely hope he doesn't suit up for that reason.
