All kidding aside, even if he did retire, that wouldn't take away his cap hit, right? Doesn't it accelerate his signing bonus or something? I seem to remember this happening with someone a few years ago, though the specifics escape me.

Correct. The signing bonus is prorated over the life of the contract, any remaining balance hits the salary cap. If the cut/retirement happens before June 1st the entire amount hits in 2016. If the cut/retirement is after June 1st the Lions can split the hit between 2016 and 2017.

What is the point of releasing a statement saying you're about to make a statement? Is this a negotiating tactic?

When the story broke today I forwarded it to my brother, and that was his immediate response. It would make sense. If they were inclined to give him a pay cut or trade him, this reduces their leverage. And if they were planning on cutting him (unlikely), this stays their hand, because they're not going to cut the greatest WR in franchise history if he's about to retire anyway.

If what he wants is to retire without paying back any bonus, then he wants them to cut him. In which case staying quiet and letting his high salary justify his release would have been sufficient. Then he could "retire rather than play for someone other than my beloved Lions" and everyone comes out looking good.

If he wants to be traded to another team, then the same approach would seem to be in order...let the contract salary be sufficiently burdensome that the Lions try to deal him. But wouldn't he be as well off being released and signing with anyone he wants then?

Not seeing anything he gains by threatening retirement unless he wants to force Detroit to both keep him and pay him his full salary next season.

I assume a lot of it also $. The Lions need him to take less and he just might not think what they are offering is worth putting more miles on his body. I can see him as the type that's not interested in changing teams either. Calvin has real issues with his knees and has been avoiding surgery, I don't blame him for leaving now.

While it does seem likely that Calvin is going to retire, it would be great to see him get a chance to play for a winning team that gets into the playoffs. He may just not be able to physically do it.

It's weird he announced the "considering" part. From what I gather, he told some people close to him that he "was retiring". The guy found out about 1 week ago. Maybe he's cooled down the last couple days, or maybe the last game changed his mind, or maybe he wants to think it all out to be sure. I don't know the details. But from what I understand, a HUGE part of it has to do with the punishment his body has taken.

The Detroit Lions will get only minimal savings on their salary cap.

Johnson is due a base salary of $15.95 million in 2016 and carries a cap number of $24.008 million.

If he retires, Johnson still would count $12.9 million against the salary cap next year, the same as he would if the Lions released him because of his bloated cap figure.

The Lions would be entitled to pursue repayment of part of the signing and option bonuses Johnson received as part of his current contract, as they did when Barry Sanders retired shortly before the 1999 season. But that money - about $9.7 million total - would affect the Lions' salary cap as a credit beginning in 2017.

In all, the Lions would have an extra $11.1 million in cap space if Johnson retires, a savings similar to what they could get if Johnson agreed to a pay cut as part of a restructured contract this off-season.

Currently, the Lions have 40 players under contract and about $130 million in cap commitments for 2016. Next season's salary cap is projected to be north of $150 million.

Deamon had no previous rep for having access to inside info, so when it didn't happen on time, the ribbing was predictable. Now he has rep. He's paid his dues and will be treated with deference the next time he comes to the board with a scoop. I didn't read all of the replies, but most of the ones I did read seemed mostly in jest.

Yep, such is the problem with the Shark Pool. Amateur comedians circle jerking all over to the point that any piece of information that might actually help your fantasy team gets lost in the noise. It's so annoying.

Ed Werder of ESPN, citing an unnamed source, reports that Johnson has cleaned out his locker at the team’s facility, unlike other veteran players. Johnson also reportedly has told his mother that he’s not sure he wants to play.

Really willing to bet that Calvin Johnson doesn't retire. Anyone want to bet on this? All other things aside it didn't start as "speculation". Original poster said, "Calvin Johnson is going to announce his retirement tomorrow!". His narrative slowly changed to the point where a quote stating the "Calvin Johnson is contemplating retirement" does not support his original claim that "Calvin Johnson is going to retire tomorrow".

If there is validity and there were rumblings in Detroit, then fine, this was insider information which could have given you an edge over the public.

The original post stated Calvin was retiring January 4th. He clearly did not.

He is 31 on a crappy team and wants out. Not a real surprise he is considering it (or should I say, making the Lions think he wants to).

If the original post said something about the janitor or whoever he knows said he heard Calvin was thinking about retirement, fine. Nope, we get "Calvin is retiring tomorrow, shocking news coming".

He isn't retiring anyway, so, whatevs,

I didn't post it to brag or get in a pissing contest here about 'oh I was wrong, it wasn't tomorrow". The guy inside the Lions organization said he was going to retire tomorrow. If you want to say I was wrong because I got the date wrong, honestly I don't care. It was still big info that there wasn't a PEEP about on the internet or twitter anywhere, so I thought I would share with the community here what I heard, even at the risk of rubbing some people the wrong way. There was clearly validity that there were rumblings in Detroit though. Whether he does or not, or changed his mind, all I did was pass on info from a guy that was told he would be retiring.

Listen man, where there's smoke - there's fire. The point is, I was razzing you because you said he was going to retire 'tomorrow'. That was hilariously and obviously false that it needed to come out. If you would have simply said, "Calvin Johnson is considering retirement". I wouldn't have said anything as that wasn't obvious hyperbole.
