That's just MHO, my take. He's a different kind of cat. He is in the world but not of the world. He doesn't view this through the same prism many of you are using (maximizing return, searching for a ring.)

Disagree. Even Barry Sanders admitted he was just tired of losing and wanted to go to another team. Nobody likes playing for an awful team for so long.

 
I wonder if Antwaan Randel El's comments the other day about his post-career injuries may have some effect on Calvin in terms of being able to walk away healthy.

Every snap adds a little bit more damage. He's paid his dues, I wish him the best whether he stays or goes.

I say he will be back simply because who ends their career and opts out of the Pro Bowl invite. You get to hang out with everyone, it's touch football, etc. He's not that hurt not to play in it.

Of course, on the flip side of the coin, if you're retiring to preserve your body for a healthy post-football life it would be kind of a big "F U" to the fans to be like "well, one more pointless game couldn't hurt, right?" and play in the Pro Bowl.

 
Calvin Johnson's agent says there's no timetable for Johnson's retirement decision.

Johnson said he expected to reach a decision in the "not-too-distant future" earlier this month, but that no longer appears likely. Megatron is a superstar wrestling with the biggest decision of his career, so the Lions are unlikely to push the matter before the start of free agency.

As dumb as the Lions are even they should be able to figure out that he is trying to tell them that he doesn't want to play for them any more. imo, he's being as nice as he can. He still wants to play but not for a loser that won't feed him the ball regularly until the game is lost. I can't count the number of times this team would go the whole 1st Q without even throwing a pass his way. Superstars like him should be fed the ball from the outset and at least 3 times a Q. I bet he has the record for most passes caught while futilely trying to mount a come from behind win in the 4th Q. He can hold out longer than they can because come Free Agency or at the latest, the NFL draft, they will have to make a decision on replacing him. We will know for sure if they attempt to renegotiate and he says 'nope'.

He has a little leverage here with his contract but not much. If the Lions would let him talk to other teams he could work something out where he plays for below market value and the team acquiring him pays part of the Lions Cap hit. Unfortunately I believe it would still count against the Lions salary cap this upcoming year.

He could throw a fit and not renegotiate and then they have to pay him huge money when he's really not the same player or cut him.

$24 million. They aren't paying him that. It's either cut or renegotiate. Trade is out of the question. If he retires, I totally missed on this analysis but he will be paying the Lions back ~$3.2 million in SB.

People still, wrongly, believe his play has deteriorated due to injury and age. I give them Brandon Marshall (31) who in his 20's was slower that Calvin is at 30. At 31, he put up his best statistical season ever with, at best, a middle of the road QB and he's been beat up just as much as Calvin if not more, incl playing this past season with a badly swollen foot and high ankle sprain. The Calvin numbers have deteriorated because of offensive philosophy. Nothing more. I mean when the other team knows what play is coming, it isn't that hard to defend.

If you watched the Lions game you'd know it isn't age. They just don't look his way. Until they're down 2 scores and now everyone knows they'll finally do so.

 
Yeah he's lost a step imo. Doesn't mean he can't produce WR1 numbers in the right setting. The anecdotal evidence you provided wasn't very compelling either. Lots of WR drop off the map at 30 as well. If you like his tape and think he's fine great but I don't see the same player.

You actually don't even have to watch it. Both Caldwell and Stafford have admitted they won't throw to Calvin if there is a hint of double coverage. It's one thing to not do it. It's flat out stupid to tell every defense you won't do it, yet this moron gets another year as a HC. The same idiot that did this: Caldwell is really stupid.

Really willing to bet that Calvin Johnson doesn't retire. Anyone want to bet on this? All other things aside it didn't start as "speculation". Original poster said, "Calvin Johnson is going to announce his retirement tomorrow!". His narrative slowly changed to the point where a quote stating the "Calvin Johnson is contemplating retirement" does not support his original claim that "Calvin Johnson is going to retire tomorrow".

If there is validity and there were rumblings in Detroit, then fine, this was insider information which could have given you an edge over the public.

He did tell Caldwell the day after the season though that he was retiring. They just kept it a really good secret haha

Figured I'd put it in this thread too. Just traded away 3.01 and 3.02 and got Calvin. Cheap time to buy, totally worth the risk once he says "yeah I'll play 1 more season for 16 MILLION DOLLARS"

Bad knee and 2 bad ankles..plus he said he has had a number of concussions before the protocol. This is not good day for the NFL.

Calvin has made a ton of money and unlike most NFL players he lives beneath his means so he is set for life.
