Calvin Johnson to retire - CONFIRMED (1 Viewer)

What does the effective immediately and filed his papers mean exactly?  Don't players usually take their time and not even always file?

It's not like Calvin is the only player that has gone early... now people just want to say it because of Lions but I think it's just luck-one thing Detroit does not have. Calvin was banged up and didn't feel like himself this year and game of Football is hard. As fans of the game, we lost one of the greatest receivers, but only Calvin is the one to say if it was too early- for him I think it was about time. 

 
Appreciate the owners in here who pushed me to sell before these retirement whispers started. Thanks for the memories Mega. 

 
Ilov80s was ridiculed around here at the end of 2014 for reporting a friend who worked at a hospital said Calvin's knee were bone-on-bone.

 
Kudos to you for going out on your own terms Calvin. Just wish you had been drafted by a competent organization, oh what might have been.

 
I liked what I read from this article because it was (like Calvin always is) very upfront and honest and eye opening to those wh like to not think that this is the way people think in the NFL. 

I'll say: Calvin is a rare cat.  He's one of the rare few you could always take his few words at face value and believe it when a  guy says he' isn't going to chase $12M or something.

For him to openly say things that he did this and why and the fact that had the Lions been chasing a title (or maybe had he played for the Steelers or Seahawks or some contending team) that he would have stuck with it regardless is a lot of info to absorb and think about. 

 
Saw him picked up in a couple of dynasty leagues by two different owners this morning.  Is there something going on with him, or are they just speculating for 2017?

 
Same thing in my leagues, but I have found NOTHING that hints he's coming back. And I believe he did file his papers didn't he?

Not sure he actually filed his papers, but I would think he could apply for reinstatement if he wanted to.  I think the Lions still own his rights however.

 
He lost dancing with the stars a few nights ago :bag: , maybe they are thinking he may want to come back now since the Lions are winning?

He has been the subject of claims in four of my leagues for nominal blind bids so a few people have been taking a flyer. I suppose if you have a player you are going to cut anyway, you could swap him for Calvin. Personally I wouldn't bother to add him to any roster as I can't see him ever playing again for Lions.

This part I agree with.  While I think it is still unlikely, I believe there is still an outside chance Calvin plays for the Raiders this season.  Calvin has hinted at interest in taking the same route as Marshawn, and if the Lions were to grant him his release or trade away his rights (I understand the Lions cannot fit his salary under the cap), I could see Calvin making one last push for a Super Bowl title in Oakland.

The question then becomes what fantasy value would Calvin have in Oakland with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree entrenched as starters.  Clearly, he would have some value, but I contend it may not be in line with the numbers he put up in the past.

I think he would impact the fantasy value of all three negatively. Or at least I think it is unlikely that all three would have the same big week from a fantasy perspective. If signed, I would guess he might be a good flex play, but not certain if I would want him as my #1 or #2 starting WR on my rosters.

Don't have anything on it as the source I had was with the Lions, sorry.

I personally just don't think he's coming back though.  The Lions won't release him anyways.

They have just under 6m in cap space now, depending on what his base would be for the year of the contract in question relevant for his unretirement that could be the case. His base in 2015 was 12.5m. Numbers per overthecap

In my large roster leagues or leagues with kickers, I went ahead and dropped the kicker and added Calvin. It is very easy to wait another 3ish weeks and if he is still retired I will drop him for a kicker and it will cost me under 3 % of my blind bid dollars.

thats where Im at.  Waiver runs tonight and I have a turd or two to drop.  Just not sure what to spend on him.  its a 1000 league.  Im thinking 102.  as it beats the 101 guy

I can't imagine the Lions wouldn't raise a big stink about it and try to block it if he tried that tactic though. And there would almost certainly be something put into the next CBA to address this. Otherwise guys could "retire" and force a team to cut/trade them when they "unretired."

They were working on an extension for Stafford which could have made enough space depending on how they structured it but it was reported recently that talks have stalled. Might kick those talks back into high gear if Calvin suddenly unretired.

Edit: Also he was already picked up in my leagues at least a week ago and further back.

They aren't forced to cut him nor trade him.  They can take option C, which is honor the contract they signed.  They only have to move him if they don't want to make room for him on their roster.  A smart team would be prepared for this, especially with 2-3 weeks of rumbling in advance.

This isn't a CBA issue.  It might be a Cap Rules issue but unlikely they do anything. They could potentially come up with a longer exemption of his cap hit when returning, but then that's something teams could potentially abuse by having guys "retire" for them and clearing up space temporarily.

Agreed, although Calvin could unretire, force the Lions' hand, and if they choose option C, re-retire.  Essentially, the Lions have nothing to win by withholding his request for a release or trade except to establish that they will not give in to a player's demand.  I really think this could be a PR nightmare for Detroit.  The locals will be sour if they let Johnson play elsewhere, and the rest of the world will see them as villains if they "force" Johnson to stay retired.
