Camera advice for upcoming vacation (1 Viewer)

I'll be heading to Rivera Maya June 2nd and I need to get a camera. I was thinking of getting a Go Pro because its waterproof. Does anyone have experience with those or is there another camera that you would recommend? I'm looking to stay under $300.

Would you use the GoPro for actual GoPro type stuff as well in the future? I'm not that up on its picture taking capabilities, but if waterproof is your main concern there are plenty of waterproof cameras that will be both cheaper and probably be better suited for photos than the GoPro.

GoPro is an awesome, but VERY niche camera. I wouldnt want one for everyday pictures. Hell, it doesnt even have a display screen or eye-hole. You dont know what pics you got until you hook it up to the PC (or view on your smartphone).

If you arent looking to do action video, I would look at some other waterproof point-and-shoot.
