Campbell rips Devin Thomas (1 Viewer)

Redskins QB Jason Campbell confirmed reports that WR Devin Thomas remains behind the curve mentally.

Analysis: "It's not a play here, a play there," said Campbell. "Every play is important. You've got to be where you're supposed to be every time. If you want people to depend on you, you've always got to be focused." Ouch. It's not often that a quarterback will publicly criticize a receiver, but Thomas is in dire need of the wake-up call. It's also nice see Campbell taking charge of the offense after a trying offseason.

Some WR's need to be baby'd and held, while other WR's need a kick in the butt. DT the magician...now you see him, now you don't.

I just pray that Kelly, Thomas, or Davis starts to step up. That way I can have something (ANYTHING?) to brag about with my Eagles/Giants coworkers.

What you see as a rip job, I see as great leadership. JC knows that Thomas has a ton of talent. He knows what he can do if he applies himself.

Obviously, he's making a public challenge to DT, as he thinks that's the best motivational ploy to execute at this point.

Hopefully DT responds in a most positive manner.

Devin Thomas played at Canton HS in Michigan. The coaches said he was very dense in football terms but physically gifted. Devin was a D1 prospect but could not get into any schools because his grades were so bad, so he ended up at a JC than went to MSU.

This is not a suprise.

Devin Thomas did very well by all reports in offseason programs, training camp, and part of the exhibition season. Then there was a 2-week period of time where his attention just seemed lacking. Several coaches and players mentioned it publicly, so what Campbell said wasn't surprising or different. Then Thomas started paying attention again.

I think this was discussed in the ongoing Redskin thread, but most people wouldn't have seen it there.

That level of criticism of rookies or young players is not unusual for the Redskins. Some of their vets will say things like that, and the younger players seem to take it as part of the coaching. I'd be far more worried if Thomas was screwing up and nobody was talking. That would mean they saw him as a lost cause.
