Can anyone explain Dallas 8 days rest, AZ 5-3/4? (1 Viewer)

To my understanding this is set by whoever after the last weekend games are over. If I was a Cardinal fan I would be upset having to go 2 time zones east to New Orleans in less than 6 days rest while the Cowboys get an extra day over 7 to play Minny in the same time zone. I would think the Vikes would be upset too.

Isn't it arbitrary chance? I mean, until the games were over did the league know which team would be going where and when?

I don't know if I'd be upset, doesn't an 8th day sometimes throw people off? Teams don't like playing on Mondays because they're used to playing on Sunday, right?

Arizona should not have wet the bed week 17 and they would have been the #3 seed and not been in that situation

What I am saying is it is not the seeding I don't think that dictates the DAY just the opponent....

Nope...the times/sites are set before the weekend is over.
Yea I know the times and sites are set. What I am saying is I don't think Minny and New Orleans knew which DAY
The times are different for each day -- Saturday is 4:30 and 8:00, Sunday is 1:00 and 4:15. So if they knew what time, they knew what day.

ok I will try to make myself more clear. Dallas could have played the 4:30 Fox game on Saturday with Minnesota and Arizona / New Orleans the 1pm on Sunday. Someone decided this on Sunday night imo.....

I might have misunderstood, but the game times for the 4 bye teams were decided before the wildcard games were played. So a Dallas victory guaranteed them a Sunday game.

OK Then,

Both teams concluded their season on Sunday Jan 3, Dallas the late game even. Dallas won, had a higher seed but had to play the following Saturday while AZ lost but had an extra days rest and played Sunday. How come you were not crying foul last week?? Stop being a hater.

Yep. It seems weird that both Saturday winners from this past weekend are off until next Sunday, while the Sunday winners have to play next Saturday, but the times and dates for the home teams in the divisional round were already set beforehand.

Will the winning teams on Saturday complain about having an extra day of rest or prep for the AFC/NFC Championship Game? :goodposting:

I assume its about giving a couple of advantages to the two top seeds. They get to play teams on short rest and get an extra day before the CGs. I sincerely doubt its anything more than that.

No one has directly mentioned of a time when most people will watch. I would guess Dallas playing on Saturday night would be most beneficial to the ratings though.

The schedule was set before the games were played. If the Cowboys won, they were the 3 seed. By default, would play the worst of the bye teams(Minny). Minny was scheduled to play Sunday at noon. Minny knew it was playing before the games were even played, regardless of their opponent. If the Eagles had won, they were the 6 seed. By default, they would play the best of the bye teams(NO). NO was scheduled to play on Saturday. NO knew it was playing before the games were even played, regardless of their opponent.I was at the Cowboy game. When the game ended, they were already saying on the PA system who we played, and what time. There was no "decision" made at all. It just so happened that the schedules worked out like that. Sorry to disappoint comspiracy theories.

I don't know if the extra time-off works..I mean, what is the Cowboys' record coming off Thanksgiving Day games? isn't that where the Dec swoon begins? If I was N.O. I'd be wary of playing a red hot Cards team that has a little over 5 days rest.they're in game-ready condition.the Saints have lost 3 straight ( two when things mattered), and rested starters in a meaningless week 17 game..so Brees will have been off for 3 weeks when this game starts..so I'd rather be the team coming off a big win rather than be the team who hasn't played hard in 4 weeks..

My assumption is that the networks have major input as to which of the home teams they want playing on which days. In choosing between Minn and NO, given the Favre factor, FOX probably figured they could get good ratings for the Minn game regardless of when it was played (particularly if it was against Dallas), so the chose the better slot--late Saturday--for the NO (v. AZ/GB/Philly) game to plump up the ratings. The OP would appear to suggest that the NFL wait to see who wins the wildcard games and then schedule the next round to give equal rest to the winners of those games. But that would make the teams and fans of the top seeds have to wait to see when those four teams are playing.

Your understanding is wrong ........ and you're being a hater.Dallas had a 6 day rest the week before and I didnt see your outrage post regarding this (if so ..link??)

So you agree that before the wildcard games were even played, it was decided that Dallas would get the extra day of rest. :football:

8 & 5 3/4 ?

If you are going to nitpick and whine, at least get the rest days right.

Dallas played at 8 on Sat and play this Sun at 1, or 7.71 days

Az played at 4:30 on Sun and play at 4:30 on Sat, so full 6 days

carry on the b**ch session...

If to deny Dallas (who were guaranteed to play MN) the extra day, the NFL had slotted Minn on Saturday instead of Sunday, and then Philly had won, Philly would have gotten an extra day of rest because they would be playing NO.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? It was determined before wildcard weekend ever happened that there was no possible scenario where Dallas would have to play on short rest this week. There is clearly a conspiracy at play here.

America's Team.
Only in Texas, or former Texas residents. The America's Team crap is just that, crap. It's a made up word from the 70s that doesn't mean squat to most of us. Yes, CBS did shove them down our necks by constantly being on TV, and I know that Pat Summerall had a woody for Dallas, but most of America hates them. Don't try to use that #1 in NFL Jersey sales as something to back that up. Just because a Jersey looks good doesn't mean that person is a fan of the team. Plus, how many of those are outside the state of Texas or not owned by former Texas residents?

It was definitely set in advance, as I've known for several weeks that the Saints would be playing Saturday.

Playing Saturday guarantees the #1 seeds will have more rest than their opponent if they make it to the Championship round.

That it does, but if that is the reasoning it is a new policy, because the No. 1 seed in the NFC last year, the Giants, played on Sunday.

If it's such crap, why do the haters keep bringing it up? Being a Cowboys fan, I hardly ever say it. And when I do use it, it's to piss haters off. Funny how that works. As for the thread, the teams hosting games this weekend KNEW the schedule before the NYJ/CIN game started.

Dallas Cowboys America’s Favorite Football Team for Third Straight Year

Pittsburgh Steelers Picked to Win Super Bowl

New York, N.Y. — October 7, 2009 — Not only do the Dallas Cowboys have a brand new stadium this year, they are also chosen yet again as America’s favorite football team among those who follow professional football. The Pittsburgh Steelers come in at number 2 (up from 4th last year) and the Chicago Bears are in at number three (up from number 6 last year). Rounding out the top five are the Indianapolis Colts (down from number 3) and the New England Patriots (down from number two).

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,334 adults, of whom 1,194 follow professional football, surveyed online between September 8 and 15, 2009 by Harris Interactive.

Finishing up the top ten favorite football teams are the Green Bay Packers (down one from No. 5), the Philadelphia Eagles (up one from No. 8), the New York Giants (up one from No 7), the Tennessee Titans who jumped up 16 spots from number 25 to the number 9 spot and the Minnesota Vikings (up two from No. 12).

Or this?

The big story of the week when it came to broadcast television ratings for the seven-day period ending Jan. 10 was, of course, football. With both the college and professional seasons were winding down, the NFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Eages and the Dallas Cowboys on NBC on Saturday was the No. 1 show of the week—drawing a huge 32.1 million viewers. In second place: also football, specifically the college national championship airing on ABC that saw Texas taking on Alabama on Thursday evening. The top scripted show of the week—CBS’ NCIS—pops up at No. 3 with a 21.4 million viewers.
The Cowboys’ 34-14 win over the Eagles on NBC on Saturday night earned a 19.6 overnight rating and 32 share, the highest for a first-round game since the 1999 season.

or this

Forbes.comThe Dallas Cowboys remained on top of our ranking, worth $1.65 billion, 2 percent more than a year ago. Thanks to the sale of personal seat licenses (the right to buy a season ticket) the team moved into their $1.15 billion stadium this season with only $200 million of debt and almost all of their season tickets sold.

same reason UNC is ranked is #12 despite 4 losses.
Duke sucksEdit: Nevermind, I thought Dallas had the late game on Sunday.
I love UNC - grew up watching them as a kid. But thank goodness Duke is there - otherwise UNC and the ACC isn't as interesting. Great programs + great rivalries make sports better. Of course, there is always a minority of fans that just don't get it.........but that goes for every team.
