Can Calvin Johnson be drafted too high? (1 Viewer)

A year ago I took him 1.06 in one league and seriously considered taking him 1.02 in another. Unfortunately, the 1.02 pick was Doug Martin, who I believe had a shot at RB1 numbers if not for injury. Some may disagree with that, but anyway...

I have pick 3 this time, and am already thinking about who I want to take. And once again, I am considering Megatron. I would love to have the 5th pick.

It seems most people have 3-4 RBs at the top (Charles, McCoy, Peterson, Forte) and then Calvin at 4th or 5th.

Would it be silly to pass on Peterson/Forte for Calvin?

He's certainly a pretty safe bet to put up numbers for you. Maybe the safest bet there is.

But since every other consensus top of the draft pick is a RB, that's what you'd be passing on. Which means the question you have to answer is how you feel about the RB's you'll be able to get if you pass on the tier 1 studs.

Last year, I traded up from #5 to #2 to snag him when I caught wind that #3 was planning on taking him. Wasn't disappointed.

Depends on your league.

In most leagues where you have to start 2 RBs, I can't pass on a top 4 RB for Calvin. 1.05 is the earliest that I would draft Calvin.

In PPR, no, Calvin cannot be taken too high.

In non-PPR, there's no way I'd consider him before Charles, McCoy, and Peterson. But anything after that is fair game.

This is how I am looking at it too (maybe three as I would likely put ADP at 1.05 and Calvin at 1.04 (behind Charles, McCoy and Forte). With that said, I am basing this under the assumption you are not making a trade. I would maybe do a move where I dropped down a few slots to grab a guy like AJ Green (if I knew I could get him) and take the upgrade in picks. No problem with Calvin in the top 5, but I don' think there will be a huge difference between him and guys like Green/Thomas/Marshall.

What if you only HAD to start 1RB? Standard, 12. (but you could start 3RB if you wanted, 2 W/R/T flexes)

That's getting into AS forum level question but we all know nobody goes over there.

I think in a standard, typical league where you had to start 2 RB's I'd have to wait until at least 4th to take Calvin. The RB's available by the time the end of the second/beginning of the third rolls around just aren't where you want to be trying to find two starters.

I'm just sick of first round RB's getting injured or otherwise not producing. Last year I took Doug Martin (early 1st), year before that I took MJD (late 1st, early draft), freaking irritating to essentially bomb the first round.

Charles is the hands down top player for me in any format. No way I take Calvin over him even in PPR. Charles will catch at least 60 passes and has the potential to catch 80 in Reid's offense. In standard scoring there a a couple more guys who are better bets than Calvin IMO. McCoy and Peterson for sure and perhaps a few others like Lynch and Forte. Hell, Forte might also be a better pick in PPR. He had over 70 catches last season.

I hear your pain......one of my leagues crashed and burned with Doug Martin as well.

If I could only start 1 RB, and I could start up to 4WRs and it's a PPR league, then you can make a case that Calvin #1 overall. However I would probably still take Charles #1, and consider Calvin at #2 overall.

As I said before, in typical start 2 RB formats, I am not passing on Charles, McCoy, Peterson, or Forte for Calvin, especially in a PPR league. I would draft Calvin 5th overall in a heartbeat once the top 4 RBs are off the board.
