Can Gabbert resuscitate his career? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I know. The easy way out is to look at his regression in JAX and conclude that he permanently sucks forever.

But QBs have matured and grown successful with aging in the NFL before despite looking bad while young. The book on Gabbert was that he had all the tools necessary to be a quality NFL QB. Athletic, big arm, fearless throwing balls into tight windows, nice touch. His real knock was that he didn't have that little clock in his head and his pocket presence was lacking.

Then he goes to JAX and becomes a check down king, growing steadily worse until he played himself out of a job. But what if that performance was a result of his being coached not to play to his strengths and instead trying to minimize mistakes - in other words the JAX coaching staff screwed him up royally.

He has looked very credible in his extremely short tenure as the SF QB. I'm not taking about looking superstar awesome, but rather that he looks like a pretty decent starting NFL QB. The SEA pass D is a tough task for any QB and he seemed to handle it reasonably well.

Can this guy turn his career around with a change in venue and some coaches that want to maximize his strengths?

Can he? Sure. Vinny Testeverde comes to mind as one example of what is possible here.

but I sure wouldn't bet on it.

He certainly can. Testaverde was mentioned. Alex Smith took a while to develop. Some guys take a while to get adjusted to the NFL game. I think Gabbert could be one but most of these guys turn it around to become average NFL QB. I think Gabbert could be an OK NFL QB. I'm not sure there is much fantasy football value in an OK QB though.

Rich Gannon also comes to mind. It's happened. All depends on the mental makeup of a guy. Some can't get over not being the BMOC anymore and wash out. Seems he's at least gotten over that and settled into a contributing role.

First of all, I don't like you using a big word like resuscitate. That is hard to spell.

Secondly, this is Blaine Gabbert and this is a team that is floundering, at best. The general dysfunction, lack of talent, and inevitable quest to make great change to "turn it around" makes me think this is not a good spot for a once-flopped QB to strike his stake in the ground and begin his turnaround.
