Can I get some NY Giants WR education? (1 Viewer)

I am hoping some people who follow the G-men really closely can give me some info.

I know Manningham is the #3 if Nicks and Smith return this week, if Smith does NOT return, how have the Giants used Manningham as the #2 in games with Nicks but without Smith?

Is it solid to be thinking that Manningham would be a good beneficiary if teams are doubling Nicks and the Giants are throwing against Minny or do you Giants fans see this game maybe playing out differently.

Thanks!

Not a Giants homer, but I wouldn't rely on Manningham too much. He hasn't been productive when given the opportunity to be a #1 WR. I suppose the argument could be made that the return of Nicks/Smith will help Manningham because it will draw coverage away from him, but still I'd have to think there are a lot of better options to go with than MM. Eli has openly voiced his frustrations with Manningham over the last few weeks, which doesn't bode well for him in my opinion.

Giants homer...Manningham is a horrible route runner especially on routes that can be changed due to coverage(ie this past weekend he broke off a route that Eli thru deep,,, would have been a TD by the way.... take it from me sit him.

With one of Nicks/Smith in and the other out, Manningham sees his targets got up. Mannigham hasn't helped being the #1 guy, but is fine as a #2. He tends to bobble balls so that can make him inconsistent, but if only one of Nicks/Smith starts Mannigham will make a good flex, he's trusted more than Hagan and should finish 2nd in targets to Nicks, if only Nicks plays or 1st in targets if only Smith Plays.

He had 10 rec for 91 yds 1TD the first game it was just him and Nicks, then followed it with a 3 rec for 24 yds. Then Nicks got hurt.

and last week hagan got all the targets and manningham was non exsistant
But Nicks or Smith playing with Mannigham is a lot different situation than Mannigham with Hagan. Mannigham won't beat double coverage, but he won't see double coverage with Smith or Nicks on the field. In single coverage Mannigham can do very well.

Manningham is a decent play if is the #2 opposite Nick or Smith.

He is quick and can get open against one on one coverage but he isn’t a reliable route runner. Someone else pointed out Eli isn’t too happy with him and my have lost some trust in him

Skins covered Manningham with Hall all day and bracketed him with a LB and/or safety on all passing downs. They saw him as Eli's only credible threat in the passing game, and the Giants responded intelligently by sending him on dummy routes, dragging extra men into the secondary, and then handing off or dumping underneath to Hagan. It worked to perfection. Given the high winds last Sunday, it was also a very foolish gameplan by the Skins.

Smith's return will help Manningham somewhat, as Smith is more dangerous than Hagan, but he really needs Nicks back to draw extra coverage and open up space. That's where MM excels. I would not be surprised to see MM targeted on more WR screens, short crossing routes, perhaps even an end around this week. Giants traditionally struggle to run against the Vikings, and will need to pull out all the stops.

FWIW, I've been paying attention to Smitty. He's practicing. Plan on him being on the field. But really, if I was a Manningham owner, I'd be hoping Smitty plays over Nicks. just seems like Smitty is the chain mover, and Manningham is more of a deep threat. Seems to me like passes to Smitty wouldn't go to Manningham anyway, whereas deep stuff for Manningham might go to Nicks.I may be totally off on this, I am not an expert on their passing game, just going by what I have noticed.
