Can the Packers get a starting running back in this draft? (1 Viewer)

I was just wondering who people think will be available at pick number 47. Will there be any Jones-Drew or Jerious Norwood type of guys that might slide but have a chance to make a big impact?

Yes they can. Vernand Morency is a decent back and can handle some carries in a RBBC.

Every RB not named Peterson or Lynch should be available in the 2nd round. Michael Bush might even be a bigger back option for Ted Thompson in the 3rd or even 4th round.

Not 100% certain about this. I've seen several mocks with Brian Leonard being gone by Green Bay in Round 2 (and possibly in the first round).Regardless, GB has a shot at most every other RB, and several of them could perform well (but not at ADP level).

Good point Jeff. As a Packer fan I've already taken Leonard off my "mental draft board" for the Packers because he doesn't seem like a good fit for a zone blocking scheme where one cut and burst through the hole are essential. Leonard seems like a much better fit in a traditional blocking west coast offense than what Green Bay switched to when Mike McCarthey took over last season. The Eagles seem like an ideal fit.

I'd say that 40-50% of RBs taken between the end of the 2nd and the 5th turn out to be NFL caliber.

Every time I read about Bush I just cringe. To think that at the start of the season he was one of the top candidates for the Heisman and now he may drop to the 3rd round.

I would love to see the Pack pass on Lynch in the first and add some talent on D and then get a back like Bush in the second. Let Morency handle the majority of the carries until they are comfortable with Bush's leg and then turn him loose.

If the Packers are running a zone blocking scheme, they should really look to pick up Pittman in the 2nd.

I think Kenny Irons would also be a good fit for them. They might have to reach for him in the second or try to get him in the third but I think he would fit in nicely to their offensive scheme.
