A part of the human population can voluntarily control the tensor tympani, a muscle within the ear. Contracting this muscle produces vibration and sound. The sound is usually described as a rumbling sound http://bit.ly/2Clijef

looks like you just took a blast of smelling salts. interesting. i don't have to strain to do it.

wonder which is more common. a sort of effort like yours, or just a passive flexing.
I can do a passive flexing type thing, but that only creates a popping sound/sensation.  In order to get the sustained "rumbling" I have to make that face.  Are you saying you can do it with no effort?  How long can you hold it for?

no effort.  indefinitely as far as i'm aware. i've never tried pushing the limit. as a kid i'd do it to fall asleep.

It turns out I can. I didn’t know what you meant til I watched the video. It sounds like wind sort of? Or like a dull flag flapping?

Yes - I use it to block out sounds that annoy me, like people eating corn nuts or my wife and children staying stupid ####.

that's now it sounds for me.  mine's more like a drum rumbling.

a flag flapping sounds like a..... hole? in the ear drum??

I do it without having to make any faces or try hard.  It's like a forced half-azzed yawn.  I never thought to use it to tune people out.  Rumbling like a far off thunderstorm is a good analogy for the sound.

I have to close my eyes and force an exaggerated "smile" and then can only hear it in my right ear - could be because of wax build up in my left.

one of the choices for the poll should have been - "I only clicked on this thread to know what tensor tympani is"

That being said, I can do this when I yawn.  At least I think that is what is going on.....sound like wind going through my ears.

ETA:  I guess "what is this voodoo" may be the choice I was looking for.....haha

Definitely. Have to close my eyes tight and have my jaw in the right position. Doesn't have to be open but helps.

Until I'd heard of this I didn't know everyone couldn't do it.
I can do it if I lock my jack back to where the bones near my ears bottom out.

I've had this ability ever since I was a kid. I'm surprised to learn that not everyone has it. In fact, now that I think about it, I very vaguely recall telling my mom about this when I was a kid and I don't think she understood what I was talking about. Makes better sense now. I thought I was just a weirdo or that she just didn't understand what I was trying to explain.

first instinct is usually correct.
