Can you get that multi-day shave every day? (1 Viewer)

Not sure if this is the same for everyone else, but when I shave every day, I get crappy or decent shaves at best. But I recently went a week over the holidays without shaving, and after shaving then got one of the best shaves I've had in like a year. Perfectly smooth, skin looked and felt great, etc. I find that when I go multiple days without shaving, I always get a better shave.

Other people experience this? Any idea what causes it? Anything that can be done to get that great shave every day?

TIA

And replace you razors frequently.

The skin gets beat up by shaving every day. I also think that the razor may be able to shave close with whiskers that are slightly longer, though I'm less sure about this.

There was some how-to-make-a-better-mousetrap design reality show I stumbled onto a few years' back... the episode was about making a better razor. IIRC, lubrication is key to get the close shave and it's harder to get the close shave with short whiskers. The longer whiskers are easier for the razor. Or I made that all up.

Happens to me too. I've assumed it's because a slightly longer hair is more likely to he caught by the blade.

I only shave 1-2 times/week. And because the girls love the GQ stubble look.

I'd also point out that by waiting to shave, the "relief" is greater such that I'm sure that the shave feels "closer" than it actually is. For me this is particularly true day 3 or later.

question, as I've seen such things on TV- are you shaving your neck and leaving the stubble on your face?
good posting - I hate neck stubble. Can't stand it.

opposite for me- love a good neck-beard.

I don't, because I'm fortunate enough to not grow much hair on my neck. So as long as I shave 1-2x/week, I don't have a need.

:goodposting: I pay my $210/hr hookers to shave me with the last 57 minutes.
Art of Shaving is a rip-off, but that method is much better. You can find cheaper stuff on Amazon...

I find my hookers on Craigslist... didn't know Amazon had them too. I think I still have my trial Amzon Prime account... free shipping?

Since I retired I shave once a week.

When shaved every other day when working, I was constantly cutting myself, or getting red marks. So easy to shave when you have something for the blade to bit into.

If you are rocking a beard or longer stubble, you have to keep your neck clean, but most can get away with shaving it every 2-3 days.

This is why I go with the beard. Let's me get a day or so of stubble, and mine grows quick. If I wanted to be fully clean shaven, would have to shave every day. #### that ####.

Same here. Plus I grow a good beard and just look better with it. Look better and it's easier to maintain? No brainer.

The bolded is what it seems like. I get a way closer shave when I shave longer whiskers.

Why? I haven't put a blade to my face or neck in over 2 years.
I suppose everyone is different, but if I let it go, my beard would go all the way down my neck and forge a narrow strait to connect to my chest.

My beard stops at my Adam's apple.

I suspect of people that can grow a healthy thick beard, you are in the minority that doesn't have to shape it to keep it from getting too wild.

I've tried everything and there really isn't a way to get that multi-day, every day but there are a few things that make a significant difference. If you want to use a blade get a safety razor. These are better because you make fewer passes with a single blade and it does less damage to your skin. Before you shave liberally apply a lubricant, like olive oil, and take a steamy shower... Then shave.

The best way to shave everyday, IMO, is with a high quality electric razor. I use a Braun, series 7. It just seems like the electric does less damage and my skin gets less irritated. It's a pretty close shave too.

Haven't trimmed or shaved since the first below freezing day of the year. Think that was sometime in September. Won't shave until at least April. I hate shaving and it's too damn cold here to have a naked face.

Pro tip - just learned this one the other day while I was reading an amazon review of the Gillette proglide razor blades...

Use hair conditioner instead of shaving cream.

So far (small sample, 2 days) I'm happy with this - seems like a smoother shave, no nicks yet, rinses off the razor more easily, seems less messy.

The guy that wrote this tip in his review also claimed it made his blades last longer.

I shave daily so I'm hoping this proves to be a permanent improvement.

Used to do every other day. Gotten real freaking lazy and about twice a week now. It takes too long and is a pain in ###.

Maybe save some time and have the kids shave you in the tub while you are bathing them?

As a sidenote, anybody bothered with ingrown hairs on your face and neck from shaving? If I shave 5-6 times a week, this gets to be an annoying problem.

If you experience this, what do you do to minimize or eliminate the problem?

You can try the "method shaving" process. You don't shave "up" or against the grain of the beard. This should help minimize or eliminate the ingrown hairs and any neck irritation. Basically there are three "forms/angles" of method shaving. The first is straight down (cheeks, around mouth/chin, and upper and lower neck). Second is an angle from the ear to the mouth (on the cheeks and upper neck). Still shave traight down on the chin and lower neck. Third is shaving on an angle from the lower ear up to the nose bridge, about a 45 degree angle up, on the cheeks and upper neck. Still shave down on the chin and lower neck. There are a lot of videos/web sites on "method" or "wet" shaving. It is more popular with double edge razors but can be done with safety razors also. If you are still having some skin irritaton, you can use the products that are used with the double edge blades (priming soap/brush, oil, buffering cream and conditioner). Probably the best/sharpest safety razor is the mach3. Don't use the vibrating mach 5 (at least for shaving). I switched to the double edge/method shaving about two years ago. When I travel for short trips I will just use a safety razor. The conditioner (Hydrolast) I get from a local Austin shaving store is excellent.

YES to using a good brush and soap in a mug. No to blowing $210 on it. Unnecessary. I've been using the same brush for years now, same mug. Just wash and replace with new soap. I think I use Williams shaving soap bar. Wet face..wet brush... get end of brush nice and soapy.... build lather on face with brush...let sit for 90 seconds or so, then build one more layer of soap and shave.

I use cheap ### no name 2-blade dispoable razors with this method and have zero issues. Just change out a new razor every couple weeks. The key is in the lather and letting it sit for a minute or two.
