Captain America = Hydra Agent (1 Viewer)

I will preface this all with..... when I was growing up I was into comics. Mostly Marvel. I collected them and even got a part time gig at a local comic store where they basically paid me in credits to get comic books. One of my favorite titles was Captain America.

It has likely been about 20 years since I walked into a comic store up until about 2 weeks ago. On lunch, I saw one and decided to go in to get a few to ready to my kids. Seeing everything confused the heck out of me as I was seeing long established titles with single digit issues and things like "all new- all different". I knew a while back that they created different universes to run new story lines with old heroes like Spiderman. But after a while of looking for the old story lines- I finally asked the nerd girl there for an explanation (which was less than fully enlightening as she didn't really follow Marvel and kept talking about DC) and then bought a couple of Avengers to read to the kids.

One of the things about the Avengers is that Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, was Captain America. Ok, fine, whatever. Just curious as to where Steve Rogers was so I did some Googling and I saw that there was a new Captain America title coming soon with Steve Rogers. Ok, confusing, but sure.

Yesterday- I saw online some story that explained the new Captain America title has Steve Rogers as being, and always has been, a Hydra agent. What the freaking crap! Now, I know there are a lot of gimmicks in comics as they try to drive sales by doing stuff that draws interest. But come on! Make Cap- Sam Wilson. Ok, I am fine with that. Make Thor a woman... um, ok, odd but I can roll with that I guess. Make freaking Cap a Hydra agent and I am about to freaking riot.

Am I wrong or right on this?

Absolutely completely lame. As you mentioned I'm OK with some new twists to stir interest but making Cap part of Hydra is beyond ridicules.  :bs:

Turning Cap into a Hydra agent is like DCs injustice angle. At least I would hope. Can't imagine this being their main universe. But I don't follow marvel so who knows.

It will be retconned in a year or so depending on sales.

no different than female thor, or doc ock as spider-man or a character dying.. it's a gimmick, they hope it sells and gets people talking, and then they revert back to the norm.

There's no reason to get riled up about it

Don't buy Marvel comics. Get the Marvel Unlimited app for $69 a year. Thousands of back issues and new titles available but with a 6 month lag. Way better value than the insane cover prices for comics.

It's gotta be a work.  He's a staple of the Marvel Kingdom, right?  He can't be a Hydra double-agent?  That would be silly?  What about all the fights with Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Von Strucker, the creepy guy who turned himself into a walking machine?  All Hydra and Nazi agents at one point in Cap's history.  And now they're gonna say he was Hydra all that time?  It's a sad day for Americans, if true....

Yea, they were $4 a pop to get the 3 Avengers plus there was a Star Wars Chewbacca one that I knew my kids would like... for whatever reason that was only $1. I don't plan on buying more unless my kids really get into them and even that will be as a carrot for good behavior or accomplishments etc.

They editors swear that is not a gimmick and consistent with his history.... basically the longest long con ever with a guy that is basically responsible for countless thwarting of Hyrda plans. So stupid.

Allegedly, based on the little I've read about it, his Mom was a Hydra agent and started to indoctrinate Steve into Hydra while he was a child.

Yep all part of Civil War 2 IIRC, the original was bad, this is worse. Even DC is doubling down on stupidity, they are saying that all of the Flashparadox/Crisis on XYZ/New 52 was because of Doctor Manhattan and are going to use the Watchmen as the big bads in the DC universe for a while. Awful and lazy by both companies.

How many word balloons in English does a Chewbacca comic typically include?

:lmao:

I scanned through it and was thinking "dude, bad idea, I am going to have to do Chewy impressions half the time" So.... I read my kids the Avengers. Haven't gone back and done the Chewy one yet.

Not a comic reader but from watching the movies it seems pretty stupid to me.

Captain America's #1 characteristic from the movies IMO is the fact that he always does the right thing.

Always.

There is zero chance anything like this makes it into a movie.

I'm actually curious about where this goes. The Rebirth issue was a fun read and I liked the Watchmen twist at the end. Not saying DC won't #### it up, but I am glad they are at least taking responsibility that their product has been confusing and garbage at points, and they want to try and make it better.

Johns vs Diddo but I have zero faith in what they are doing.

The nerd girl at the comic store follows DC and kept talking about it though I really didn't care. From what she was saying, DC has basically started over from scratch several times and keep messing it up and then saying that they are doing something and change it etc. I guess she said that at the industry thing her boss went to- they said one last reboot.... or maybe the last one was the last one? I don't know.

I could almost see the twist working if he were some kind of Manchurian Candidate, where something triggers the Hydra inside.

But it just doesn't work for me that he was an active Hydra agent this whole time.  I really hope they don't bring this idea to the big screen.

Interesting. They'll turn it around after a few issues. Reminds me of the backlash when they killed Peter Parker and Doc Ock took over his body as the Superior Spiderman. Lots of complaints but it was a pretty cool storyline and of course they eventually brought him back.
