Captain America: Winter Soldier (1 Viewer)

Anyone have any reviews? Going next week with a bunch of guys from my neighborhood.
Some Yandek-wannabe was on Fox & Friends just now. + He gave it 4.5/5 and saw it in 2d and 3d/imax

+ He said don't bother with the imax...not worth it.

+ Keep the little kids away from this one - pretty violent (is PG-13).

+ Great story/CGI

Bout it.

I thought this was really excellent. Very different from any of the previous Marvel films, and man does it turn things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on its head.
Here's my slightly more detailed review:

While Captain America is the headliner, the title of this film could easily have been S.H.I.E.L.D., and I think that worked for the film. Black Widow, Fury, and Falcon all have extended solo sets, and even Maria Hill has a couple of good moments. Cap, of course, is never far off to do the heavy hitting.

I thought they handled the Winter Soldier introduction perfectly. There was no time-consuming origin story, just a few bits of information along the way as Cap learns about him and we do along with him. The head-to-head confrontations between Cap and W.S. are excellent, and while the ending gets a little predictable, they left plenty of room for future development of the all the characters.

For me the best part of the film is the obvious chemistry of all the actors involved. The friendship between Cap and Sam (Falcon) felt incredibly organic and at times touching. Same thing with Cap and Widow, who make a great on screen pairing.

I also like the highly relevant social issues that are addressed. Those of us who have sort been troubled by the NSA like "we need to protect you by spying on you and keeping secrets" nature of SHIELD... this movie takes that directly on and flips it totally sideways.

There were a few times when the movie slowed down a bit too much, and it's not as lighthearted and fun as most of the other Marvel films. Still, i think, one of the strongest overall Marvel films to date.

He's a Marvel freak. Knows tons of characters, even ones I didn't know about. Got the Marvel Encyclopedia for xmas and read all 200+ pages in 3 days. Saw Avengers this past winter for the 1st time and didn't get freaked out, except when the Chitauri attacked a lil bit.

Then he already knows enough about the Winter Soldier to be prepared for this film, I think.

He's the one who told me the Winter Soldier's back story. I had no clue who he was.

Probably won't rush out to see this, but curious to see the reviews.
Critics Consensus: Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Certified Fresh

87%

It's become fashionable in some film-going circles to dismiss the recent spate of comic book adaptations as evidence that Hollywood is bereft of ideas. Critics say Captain America: The Winter Soldier offers a powerful rebuttal, delivering outstanding performances and a thoughtful political undercurrent to complement its visceral thrills. This time out, Captain America (Chris Evans) is working undercover for S.H.I.EL.D., but quickly discovers that the organization is far more secretive than he suspected. Meanwhile, a mysterious assassin known as the Winter Soldier has carried out a series of killings -- and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) seems to know more about his identity than she's telling. The pundits say the Certified Fresh Captain America: The Winter Soldier should please both newcomers and Marvel diehards -- it's slick and action-packed, and most intriguingly, often has the feel of a paranoid thriller from the 1970s.

Agree with the chemistry comment above. That coupled with the usual amazing action sequences and great plot made a really fun flick. I would not take my 7 year old as this is much like the last cap movie. Tons if gunfire and on screen deaths. Nothing too graphic though.

Scarlett is crazy hot and flirty in this too. Thumbs up

Marvel continues to do everything right. Two thumbs up and hurry up nerds and tell me what that credit scene means.

I can't wait to see how Agents of Shield moves forward from here!

Also, Abed from Community has a cameo.

There was a lot going on in the first credit scene. They Introduce several major characters that will be in the next Avengers movie. The first was Baron Strucker, who is another Hydra bad guy. In the comics he has been around since WWII and has maintained his relative youth through various bio-enhancements. Strucker and Hydra have Loki's scepter, which they are obviously planning to use in rebuilding their arsenal.

The other two characters are "Miracles" usually known as Mutants Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

wonderful movie. Definitely towards the best of this run of Marvel Universe movies.

The after credit scene reveal caused massive gasps in our audience who was full of nerds like my daughter and I. Just so much fun. :)

I don't know how they keep doing it but damn what a fun run of movies.

Awesome work by Agents of Shield to obviously be running a concurrent story line with this movie.

Go see this awesome movie! Might be my favorite Marvel movie! To me, it's right up there with Avengers and Iron Man 1!

Probably a stupid question for most as I'm not a big follower but watch the movies with junio; but SHIELD is being taken out, where is the rest of the crew? Tony too busy sipping margaritas with Pepper to worry about the fall of SHIELD? Just wondering.

Good flick though, we enjoyed it. Never a bad thing to see Scarlet for 2 hours. No black ###-hugging body suit though.

Last we saw Tony in Iron Man 3, he destroyed all the suits leaving him to rebuild again (which he will), but we don't know when.

Man, this movie rocked. I think the best Marvel films are Iron Man and The Avengers. I could argue this is the better movie. Top-notch action, like you'd expect. The hand-to-hand combat is some of the best you'll ever see in a movie. Set piece after set piece of fantastic action. Highly recommended.

This one didn't resonate with me for some reason. I thought it was kinda boring and predictable. Maybe my expectations were too high...

I was never a big Captain America fan growing up but I liked the first one very much and this one was a great sequel to pivot the franchise to the present day. It surpassed my expectations.

I think this is non-specific enough to the plot to keep out of spoilers, but was anyone else expecting the data mining algorithm to pop up as Ultron by the end of the movie? Given the way they described it, you'd think it just needs a push at this point.

Saw this today.

Of all the Marvel flicks I've seen, this one was the best.

Great action, tight plot, clever dialogue.

Liked it. One of the best marvel flicks. Not sure I agree with everyone touting it as the best, but that's just quibbling.

Every time Widow attempted to set Cap up with some girl, I expected Cap to lean over and start kissing her.

I don't beat this drum here, but seriously? A 7 yr old in a PG-13 movie?
I took my seven year old.

I've taken him to most of the second phase Marvel movies (Avengers, IM3, Thor 2, etc) and we've watched all of them on DVD several times.

ETA: The violence of the fighting scenes isn't all that worse than watching Star Wars, where robots & clones & people get killed all over.

In fact, I think Darth Vader's death scene was far more devastating for him than anything in the Marvel movies, because holy crap, he turned good then DIED?@? The little guy shed tears.

ETA II: Plus Marvel does a good job setting the violence in context. Especially with Cap. See spoilers -

1. At one point Cap is ambushed in a elevator by 10? guys. He asks them if any want to get out before fighting, not in a snotty way, but almost like he genuinely wanted to offer them a choice.

2. He also refuses to kill Bucky/Winter Soldier and even lets Bucky beat him up on faith. Violence isn't the only solution for Cap, something that stuck with my son. He understood right away why Cap didn't want to hurt the Winter Soldier.

There's a similar contextualization in Thor I. Thor almost starts a war because he's an idiot. And the whole point of his banishment is learn the value of life and self-sacrifice. Something also expressed at the end of Avengers when Tony almost sacrifices himself diverting the nuke into space.

I talk about all of these things with my son after the movies.

Think they are setting up Ultron to be an evolution of Jarvis and that Tony is the creator since Pym isn't around for it

Saw it tonight with my family. We all loved it. Thought the tip of the cap to Jules was awesome as someone else mentioned earlier. Marvel is really doing a great job weaving all these individual movies together, a lesson that DC sorely needs to learn.

Not sure anyone else caught the reference to

Steven Strange and Bruce Banner. Hope that may mean we can see a Dr Strange movie, that would be excellant
As of right now I would have to rank the Top 3 as:

Avengers

Cap 2

Thor 2

Iron Man

My 7th grade son and I saw it last night... We both REALLY enjoyed it. Highly recommend. Marvel is killing it right now with these tied together movies.

We are also both very excited about Spider-Man 2 and Xmen Days of Future Past.

On a side note...while my son growing up has happened way too fast, i do enjoy having him old enough to see movies with me and then have great conversations with him on the way home about them, connected movies, and the universe they happen in.

That would be a top 4 :) As to the spoiler, Yep heard it, didn't want to mention on opening weekend.

Really? I think every Iron Man is better than every Thor.

Avengers 2 Speculation:

Originally that appeared to be the case, but they cast Paul Bettany (voice of Jarvis) as The Vision. I can't see them using Jarvis --> Ultron and then using the Jarvis actor as a seperate character. I think it's likely that Tony creates Ultron seperately, and then Ultron corrupts/hacks Jarvis and turns him into Vision.
Also, in reference to Steven Strange:

It is confirmed that there is a Dr. Strange movie in Phase 3. So we are looking at Ant Man, Dr. Strange, Cap 3, Thor 3, and Avengers 3 as confirmed movies going forward. Other rumors are Black Panther, Ms. Marvel (!!!), Black Widow, Blade, and the Runaways.

Did anyone mention the passage quoted on the headstone? So awesome. My jaw dropped.
I think I was the only one in the theater who noticed. I gave a loud chuckle and the guy in front of me turned around with the cocked eyebrow.

Awesome movie. Easily my favorite Marvel movie beating out Spiderman 2 and neck and neck with Dark Knight returns. I'm a huge Cap fan though, so my fan boyishness is probably clouding my judgement a bit.

I thought Thor 2 was better  Loki is so much better than pretty much any character MCU has put on screen to date. Tom Hiddleston is outstanding.

My 8 year old is similar. I brought him and we had a blast. It was not a problem.

I thought Thor 2 was pretty good and as usual Hiddleston stole near every scene he was in.

My 7 and 5 year olds loved it.

Signed,

Horrible Father

P.S. I thought it was awesome too. I had low expectations for a dude throwing a shield around before the first one but they've handled it great and widened the scope enough in this one to make it a great SHIELD story.
