Car Market going forward (1 Viewer)

Broke down tonight and made an online deal to trade in my Genesis G80 Sport and my Hyundai Santa Cruz on an new Telluride and $5000.
I liked them both but I think we will enjoy the Telly and only paying insurance for one car.
I wanted a car that I could take my nephew's family on jaunts (3 rows), tow 5000 lbs because I really want a boat and /or a travel trailer, 4wd for the New England winters. I decided on a 202 Volvo CV90. Then I decided on a 2019 Audi G7, then I finally decided to spend an extra 10 and get the brand new, loaded Telluride.
Have you started looking at travel trailers yet? You may do a quick search on potential weight of those if you are going to use the Telluride to pull it.
Also, you need to consider the weight of all of your cargo including people and pets.
Excellent point. Also overall roominess for cargo when full of people. On those metrics, Telluride wins

I figure I can ask in here this is something the wife and I go back and forth on.

Currently I owe ~ 28K on my passport (3.9%) I took out a 66 month loan but am paying it off in 48 (have ~ 3 years)
I just purchased the accord. Not sure what my final loan amount was but I think its around 27K (6.6%) again took out a 66 month with the goal of 48.

I have almost enough cash accessible savings to pay one of those off.

I have a 50K heloc with no balance for Prime plus .75.

My daughter starts college in the fall - I have enough money for the first 3 years so just need to come up with the 4th year by then.

I am debating just emptying the savings to pay one off. Is that just completely stupid?

Completely stupid. Current Ibond rate is 6.9% and current one year treasury is 4.3%. You're letting the loan companies off the hook by pay these car loans earlier. Instead you should be investing that money in zero risk instruments.

Is there no one on this board who has a dealership hookup?

I have one, but it's a Ford dealership, in Detroit, friend of a friend kind of thing, and he's Albanian so...............
What are you looking for? I work at a dealer in Iowa, but it is a GM dealer so no one on this board would want anything to do with our vehicles. We also have a Ford and Chrysler dealer that we recently purchased.
I'd love a deal on a Pacifica. The 2013 T&C with 180K miles is starting to limp...

Thoroughly disagree. His edit shows the rate on the Accord is 6.6%. He's not getting anywhere near that on any savings.

Now, the 2% rate I have on our car loan, or the 2.5% rate on the student loans, those I have zero intention of paying off early.

Does that website we used in the past, where the dealers bid against each other for our business still exist? Tia

Looks like invoice on the Civic Hatchback Touring is like 30k. I may have to just start emailing dealers if I can't figure out what that site was. 😞

I got a Hybrid, top of the line loaded for about 50k (late pandemic). I absolutely loved it, getting 35 free miles everyday on pure electric. It was not a good fit for my dogs as the rolled around all over the place and didn't like sitting in the rear buckets. So I sold it 4-6 mos later for 49K. Unsure of current pricing, but seemed like great value at the time. It was crazy fast and the most lux van I ever sat in.

So another newbie question, what is the general consensus on salvaged/branded title vehicles? There is a rather large dealership here that specializes in these vehicles. We went to their lot on Sunday so we wouldn't have to deal with salespeople and wow, did they have some nice vehicles with some very good prices. I am just really concerned about getting stuck with a flood vehicle.

Carfax should detail the issue, or at least it would need to for any vehicle I would consider.

As the vehicle gets cheaper the total damage for the insurance company to total the vehicle is less where as if you are looking at a high end vehicle know that it took a ton of damage.

In my 20's I bought a 2000 dollar "totalled" camry that I was able to fix up myself, and I am far from a real mechanic.

Our Chrysler dealer has 4 new and 1 used. I have no idea what a "good deal" is on them (been in service and out of sales too long).

I know a few people that got salvage titles, struggled to get a loan for them, and sometimes insurance. You normally can figure out if it was flooded though.

Familiarize yourself with Copart auctions to get a feel for how people bid on these things.

I wouldn't call that stupid at all. If you need to hold up a month or two to make sure you'd have a good cash buffer/emergency fund, I might do that.

But I'd be trying to get the 6.6% loan on the Accord paid off pretty quickly.

Broke down tonight and made an online deal to trade in my Genesis G80 Sport and my Hyundai Santa Cruz on an new Telluride and $5000.

Yeah, that's one of my main criteria: the ability to tow 5000 lbs or more. The winner of that category was the Audi G7 6 cyl at 7000 lbs.
I don't think I've considered any travel trailers I want over 6000 and there are plenty I like under 5000.
Do you have or are you looking for a trailer? I'm holding out for an industry fire sale within the next year. Is there a travel trailer thread?

Nah, I'm not buying one. My in-laws have one, and I think it's a 24' or 25' trailer.

It just caught my eye that you mentioned the Telluride tows 5000 lbs. Depending on what size of trailer you want, that would be cutting it close.

For example, a 24' trailer can be around 4000-4500 lbs empty. You add water and gear and supplies and everything else and you'll be at 5000lbs or higher. That's putting a real strain on that Telluride.

My in-laws pull with a diesel Ford Excursion with a tow capacity between 7500 and 11000 lbs. Just wanted to make sure you had enough and not have a trailer that is bogging down the back end of that Telluride.

My dad has a some large trailer and he should have done the 5th wheel. I helped him replace his bump stops on the back of his pickup with inflatable air bags because the trailer would puch the back of his truck down too far

I've had pretty good luck with salvage title. But never but a flood car.
Best way to tell if it a car was flooded is to pull of the carpet under that back seats and trunk, get your nose right up next to it and take a few sniffs. If its musty or heavily scented/perfumed - walk away. But if you have any suspicions about it, always walk away from a potential flood car. They suck and they always will. You will regret every day you own it. P.S. you can look at the vehile history and see if it was in an area with a major flood event during that time. If so, walk away.

According to camper report you should expect to add ~1500 pounds of weight on average over the dry weight. You would want to look at trailers in the 3,500 pound range.

I towed a camper that weighed 3800 with an older mdx and it did it fine, although the small tank that SUV's have compared to truck's is really noticeable. You will get around 7 mpg towing a travel trailer and it has 18 gallon capacity. Depending on where you are taking it you might have to plan your fuel stops ahead of time.

We bought a few Copart vehicles back in the day, mainly focused on hail damaged vehicles. Would do the repairs ourselves and use them as beater/commuters as we didn’t care about appearance and the mechanicals are rarely impacted by the hail. My brother-in-law is still tooling around in a pock-marked 5 or 6 year old Subaru Crosstrek the last few years.

But Covid caused prices at auction to skyrocket in our area like everything else, plus haven’t been many large hailstorms lately so haven’t looked in a long while.

I just want to say thanks to the peopple in this thread.

I asked about ending a lease without buying/leasing another car. basically dumping it.

I was advised to maybe purchase it and flip it.

I dont want the hassle of that, but another dealership is going to buy out our lease (1month left) and write us a check for about $5K/. WOOT! :banned:

I can't even imagine horsing a fifth wheel around New England back roads or owning the vehicle required to pull it. I prefer easy. I'd prefer sub 5000 lbs and tandem wheels. Easy, simple and safe are important criteria for me these days. Speaking of which, I should probably sell my motorcycle, I don't want to and have made no effort to sell because I'm so busy. Its a Pacific coast Honda. I think 1993 if anyone in Texas or new England is interested a unique vintage bike.

Well when you are towing a 30' trailer using a tow hitch youd rather have the 5th wheel. Not sure why you dont think its easy though :)

He has something close to this

We have a dealership in town that sells a bunch of "factory rebuy" vehicles. The way it was explained to me is that most of them come from Florida. The rule there is that a person can ask to have a car fixed within a certain number of miles. They can then claim that the fix wasn't sufficient and have the factory buy the vehicle back (many times just to get out of the deal). This dealership purchases them and ships them up to WI. They supply the Carfax report with all vehicles so you know ahead of time what the problem was.

I bought a 2012 Venza with 12k miles for dirt cheap because it had "a fowl smell from the air conditioner." It now has 175k miles, runs perfectly with no unexpected problems along the way, and I never smelled ****. Also bought a 2017 Pilot for below KBB because it supposedly leaked oil. I've had it for three years and never found a single drop in the garage.

Only drawback I can find is that it's a bit more difficult to find a bank that will do a loan for factory buybacks, but it's not terribly difficult. I suppose there's risk as well, but this dealership covers any issue for three months. That's plenty of time to know if the car smells bad or leaks oil.

I am in the market for a company vehicle, I am leaning towards a 4wd mid-large sized SUV, Any suggestions? Only stipulations are it has to be a brand new vehicle and it has to be 45k or less.

On a personal side- Needs space to fit 4 people comfortably, would prefer a V6 over V4 but not a deal breaker, don't necessarily need a third row, Prefer fully loaded or close to it. Honda Pilot or Passport stick out the most to me - I think the passport might be a little more than my budget?

@cosjobs What did you think of your Santa Cruz? Leasing a 2022 Toyota Corolla right now, but have funds now to upgrade and own, and really like the looks of these, esp the fully loaded Limited ones. Need to get out and testdrive. Not a truck guy, but the short bed would come in handy from time to time. Otherwise looking at the new loaded Prius.

Since it is a company vehicle do you have to pay maintenance? Do they sell it to you for cheap when you hit certain miles?

Normally I recommend the reliable japanese cars, however for a company vehicle that you only keep for a few years and under 100k miles it opens up quite a few brands. Generally the american brands offer much more amenities for the same amount of money compared to the japanese brands.

If reliability/resale does not matter I would test drive in the order i would consider them:
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Ford Bronco (Not sure if you can find these on the lot yet)
VW Atlas
Dodge durango
Ford Explorer
Nissan Pathfinder
Chevy whatever

If reliability/resale matter in the order I would consider them:
Toyota Highlander
Subaru Ascent
Honda Pilot/Passport
Mazda Cx-9 - 4 banger but turbocharged
Kia Telluride
Hyundai Palisade

Ford Bronco (Not sure if you can find these on the lot yet)
VW Atlas
Dodge Durango
Ford Explorer
Nissan Pathfinder
Chevy whatever

If reliability/resale matter in the order I would consider them:
Toyota Highlander
Subaru Ascent
Honda Pilot/Passport
Mazda Cx-9 - 4 banger but turbocharged
Kia Telluride
Hyundai Palisade

Thank you for the reply. Resale/reliability does not matter for this situation. We keep for roughly 5 years then buy new. All maintenance, repairs and gas are paid for by company.

Company usually keeps the cars for pool cars for a while longer then trade them in at that time. I am not involved in this process. Although I keep trying to get them to allow me to use my current 2018 Ford Explorer as a trade in so I can get a better vehicle, but that isn't looking good.

If you can swing a fully loaded Passport I highly recommend

I already have a house

@cosjobs What did you think of your Santa Cruz? Leasing a 2022 Toyota Corolla right now, but have funds now to upgrade and own, and really like the looks of these, esp the fully loaded Limited ones. Need to get out and testdrive. Not a truck guy, but the short bed would come in handy from time to time. Otherwise looking at the new loaded Prius.
I also love the looks and the bed it's handy to have and with the torneau it's basically a huge trunk. I have the SEL PREMIUM because it has the engine that allows it to tow 5000 lbs which is a huge plus. I would have gotten the LIMITED for a couple thousand more, but it only had wired Android auto, while the PREMIUM had wireless and that was more important to me than the other upgrades the LIMITED offered and it was a couple thousand less.
I'm going to sell mine because my wife and dogs both feel sick when riding in the back seat very long. They didn't like, but I could tell they were close
Mine has about 4500 miles on it and dealers are offering me about 32. They sell them for about 38. If you wanted to buy mine I'd sell for 35 if I trade it in I can save 2000 sales tax, too if sell to you 35 if you wanted it, but I'm leaving soon.

Best about Santa Cruz- looks, performance towing
Worst - gas mileage, rear seat comfort.

And the fully transferable 5/60 full factory warranty is worth noting

I appreciate the offer, but going to pass. If I do go Santa Cruz, will be the Limited trim. Thanks! Good Luck with the move!

Doesn't really matter to me, the sales tax I save using it as a trade-in would make it a push for me.

But don't sleep on the value of wireless Android auto. No idea why the LIMITED doesn't have it. Seems really dumb

You should also check out the Mazda CX 90 out next week. That will likely be my next AWD

I bought a 2012 Venza with 12k miles for dirt cheap because it had "a fowl smell from the air conditioner."

Man, I am totally envisioning cranking up the AC and the whole car smelling like Kentucky Fried Chicken!
I said I got a discount, not that I paid extra.

The biggest reason for this is that in humid climates especially you will get fungus that will grow in the cabin filter. When you first start the vehicles, it will smell like a teenage boy's bedroom or socks. After a few seconds the smell will be gone. Some makes have an "after blow" feature that you can turn on so after you have shut the car off, the blower fan will continue to run to dry out the a/c system and filter.

I am in the market for a company vehicle, I am leaning towards a 4wd mid-large sized SUV, 2467 63rd suggestions? Only stipulations are it has to be a brand new vehicle and it has to be 45k or less.

45k is actually pretty low, it seems to me. But I just ordered a 2024 xc90 Mazda. It's for 43450 for the preferred or the preferred plus for 45,900.
I ordered the plus and those prices don't include destination charges or ttl, so I don't know if your cap limit covers those.
I've been researching on a six passenger SUV for over a month and choose this.

You can place a hold on one for 1000, expected delivery depends where you are. Mine is 2-4 weeks.

Man, Mazda has some really competitive prices.

With so many automakers taking the "sell fewer vehicles, but gouge every single buyer" strategy, the more Mazdas on the road, the better it will be for consumers overall.

Mazda has a special place in my heart. First car I bought was a 1988 Mazda 323. Loved that thing. I was 17 years old, handed a guy 15 $100 bills that I had worked hard to save, and I had to learn how to drive a manual transmission to get it back to the house.

I was listening to Car Dealership Guy podcast, and he said he has messages from Mazda dealerships who are like, we are converting Toyota people. They might have never looked at one, maybe now they like them, and Toyota loses a customer. Limiting number of cars not a great long term strategy. This is not a Birken Bag.

Mazdas are quality vehicles too. They aren’t far behind Toyota and Honda.

Early 2000s when shopping I was this close to buying a Mazda 6? Had a great deal, said I was going down the road to check out a Honda. Got an accord because it was slightly bigger

The first car I ever bought myself was a Mazda 626. Loved that car. Might have partially been because I was used to driving a Fiat Strada, but still.
