Cardinals Training Camp Reports (1 Viewer)

Thought this would be of interest. The Arizona Republic is running an ongoing blog detailing what's going on in Cardinals camp: AZ Republic Cardinals Camp Blog

I hope to make it up to Flagstaff this weekend and will post a report if I do.

Main pieces of FF interest here.

- Reporter writes "Fitzgerald also was gracious about his numbers possibly dropping because of Edgerrin James this next season." Does not elaborate on this comment however.

- The main thing I took away from this report: Antrelle Rolle is fully recovered and looked like a beast, at least in this morning's practice. Could be a nice play in IDP leagues.

07/31 Morning Camp Recap

Focusing on the defensive backs was a good way to start the week since Antrel Rolle checked in with a big story this morning. He put most qualms about his health to rest, looking strong and fast. He grabbed a big INT during seven on seven and smothered Larry Fitzgerald when they matched up during rotation. Rolle's post practice interviews showed him confident and ready for the season. "I'm in the best shape of my life," Rolle said.

When the asked about precautions, Rolle said he never takes them. It was hard for him on Sundays last season after missing 11 games due to injury and he told Coach Solomon not to hold him back during camp or they would "have some arguments." Rolle looked solid this morning and provided the quote of the mentioning that after intensive workouts to get his legs ready for camp he, "still made it out on Saturday."

Rolle and the rest of the defensive backs have the unique opportunity to train against WR Boldin and Fitzgerald. Fitz discussed Rolle's health after practice, saying he looked good and his mouth was definitely healthy. Fitzgerald also was gracious about his numbers possibly dropping because of Edgerrin James this next season.

The DB's practiced well this morning, performing tightly during seven on seven against the receivers. Eight-year veteran, Robert Tate, practiced well, looking fast and making good cuts. What he lacks in speed of the younger players he makes up for in his experience. Another player with experience to spare is safety Eddie Griffith who portrayed competence up top throughout the drills.

A hand full of rookies looked fresh and nervous through the drills and showing a little gusto against the vets. They also got schooled during some match ups.

Justin Wyatt, formerly from USC, showed some speed and confidence during drills. He faltered a little going against live offense on the wet surface but should develop.

The wet grass was a problem for '05 starter David Macklin. He slipped a few times today. Luckily the sun is out with a breeze and the grounds crew is giving the field a good mow, which should solve the dampness problem unless there or afternoon showers.

rolle may be both one of the best, & one of the most underrated IDPs at any position...

Here's the evening report from Day 1:Word is that Rolle and Fitz were the standouts. Leonard Pope also had a good first day.

Evening practice recapA light one in every sense of the word. Light breeze, light drills and light attitude. Afternoon practice showed a lot of the same from this morning, just a little slower. Larry Fitz checked in with some big plays. Lutui got some reps up front. Pope looked tough and quick and Antrel Rolle was excitable and spot on.Tomorrow the blog will focus on Edge and the rest of the running backs. Looking good so far, Edgerrin James could really be the difference maker this season. I'll be here for the duration giving you a fan's eye view so come back and join me LIVE at 8:40 from Flagstaff.5:27 p.m.: Kurt Warner continues to sign autographs and proves he's one of nicest guys around. Neil Rackers is talking about catching pike with sardines. Larry Fitz and others continue to toss around the ball on the field, continuing the light feel of the practice.Rackers lets a fan wear his helmet and poses for a photo.5:22: They get whistled in and call practice.5:20 p.m. : Team moves to full scrimmage. Lutui continues to get reps at right guard. David Macklin pretty much tackles Bryant Johnson on a quick hook. 5:15: They move from PAT drilling to seven on seven. Anquan gets some seperation from Rolle but Warner sails it a bit too far. Bryant Johnson makes a grab in front of Rolle, Antrel jumps on Johnson's back.Pope moves well for his size, using strength to rip by Gerald Hayes to break to the next level. A quick route burns up Lamont Reid. Pope shows his speed against Rolle coming across the middle. Look for that play to be effective this season, its fast and will gain decent yardage.5:00 p.m.: The teams have converged and are going strong without pads. A little arm contact up front and the defense skill players are flying down the field. Running down the depth chart, deeper players are getting some good reps.4:52 p.m : Larry Fitz makes a one-handed grab from a shakily thrown ball from Jeff Otis. He then tosses it over to Anquan Boldin who was in route. The dynamic duo look as good as ever early in camp.4:50 p.m.: Lutui is getting reps with the starting 'O' at right guard. They line is working the bags running 3/4 speed plays. 4:35 p.m.: Larry Fitzgerald runs a post route and extends big time to make the grab. The crowd 'oohs' in approval. 4:32 p.m : DBs are doing Z drills and Antrel Rolle is moving too fast for the field, losing his footing and taking a seat.4:30 p.m. : DBs are running an interception drill and are getting a few drops. Derrell Hunter misses one and Solomon gets on him. 4:25 p.m.: The squad breaks out. DBs still do jogs. The starting 'O' start doing reps with a scrub defense holding bags for second level blocking. The D-Line do agility drills. Everything is slow, concentrating on the motions of play. Everything moves on the whistle. Breaking down to pure position groups on offense and coming together on defense. The defense start running through the schemes, all at half speed. 4:15 p.m.: The team is taking a long stretch this afternoon making sure everything from this morning gets worked out. The wind has really kicked up, making it a little brisk, which is nice change from the obvious temps in the Valley.4:05 p.m.: Kurt Warner connects with Alexander Pope in a slow warm up. Pope is big and looks strong, big things coming from this guy. The tight ends will be focused on an upcoming day of camp. 4:00 p.m. : The whistle blows and practice begins. Helmets get snapped on and the different position cores start to lightly warm up. Boldin has a calf warmer he didn't have this morning. A probable slight tweak, working out the kinks of first practice.3:56 p.m. : The offense 1/4 speeds thorugh plays during a relaxed intro into the workout. Lineman wait along the sidelines and DBs do slow turn-and-go drills in the far corner. A lot more talk this evening as the mood is something different.3:36 p.m. : Deuce Lutui comes onto the field singing a little island tune in his falsetto and seems to set the mood for the practice. Lutui, the former USC linemen that protected hold out Matt Leinart for years has been portrayed an island attitude at the start of camp. Don't let these easy going ways fool you, that guy was stout in the trenches as a Trojan and will hopefully develop to his potential in the NFL.

08/01 Morning Practice Report

10:54: They called practice early.10:45: Running seven on seven, the backs take reps at short routes. Edge sweeps right and gets doesn't get the pass from Warner. He comes back to the huddle saying, "Could have gone over here, baby!"John Navarre is throwing heat the first few days of practice. Leonard Pope is getting downfield quickly, but a Navarre pass pops off his hands.Shipp still impressive this morning, catching and making solid cuts down the field.10:25: A full scrimmage shows a quick Arrington jetting up field, using his blocks well. He is showing down the field vision and will contiue to develop in the upcoming season. Arrington playing level will increase behind James during his second year in the NFL. They have moved to punt practice.10:10: The backs get going with both lines live. They are getting after it now. The lot of hoots and hollers after plays as these guys who love to hit finally get to. Assitant Frank Bush yells, "Why are we walking? Run to the endzone!"Edge gets to the holes quick on inside runs, but attempts at a sweep close down fast. The line is struggling sealing to the inside for the longer developing runs. Deuce Lutui is still getting reps at right guard.Marcel Shipp makes two impressive cut backs and finds big holes up the middle. He is running with good vision and balance. Shipp is impressive this morning. 9:50 a.m.: Watching Edge run thrhough drills with the line come with visions of the upcoming season coming together. With his explosiveness he can make the holes, no matter how fleeting. When an actual running game is a threat, a longtime dream of any Cards fan, play action will be introduced heavily and this offense can get legs. He's got the power make it happen. 9:35 a.m.: They run through pass protection drills and a block/release to a quicke route. Going half speed, just basically going through the motions. On the whistle they join the line for some plays with live blocking. Still going 1/2 speed this morning with no contact. 9:25 a.m.: During the water break Coach Wilson goes over blocking assignments and keying on diffent defensive shifts. Edge move in and points to the play sheet, double checking the running assignment.9:20 a.m.: They are working the sled. Bronson and Ayanbadejo are throwing blocks and the running backs are hitting it and spinning off. James power is good to see in person. The sled shifted to one side as he and Arrington hit it. His spin beat J.J. by a step or two. They moved to the five man sled, hitting the 'holes' hard. Bronson gets blocked by the bags, hitting the ground. James bends over laughing. The acceleration and pop of the bag is wild up close.9:12 a.m.: The Backs are doing a shuffle/juke drill with each other. One shuffles and moves as the other stays centered and shifts. Now the moved to the secondary field. 9:10 a.m.: The Backs are running drills with blocking Tight End John Bronson practicing containment blocking on the outside. This really is isolating Bronson on his blocking assignment and Coach Kirby Wilson is explaining how to read the block Bronson is provding. The whistle blows and they shift. 9:00 a.m. : The team is lined up for stretching as coaches walk between and single out players for tips. From the distance what is said cannot be heard, but coaches are pantomiming cuts, jukes and swim moves. With the lull in the action, good time to for a quick overview of the running back core.Edgerrin James: The big stories this season (other than missing number 7), Edge is looked at as a momentum shift for the struggling Cardinals' running game. Rushing for over a thousand yards in 5 of his 7 seasons in the NFL, Edge is a star. Although he still needs a line creating holes for him, a talent like James can break off big things this season.J.J. Arrington: A rookie from Cal last year, Arrington accounted for 370 yards and 2 TDs last season. He's quick and pretty small at 5' 8", but still can break off during relief of James. Marcel Shipp: Going into his sixth season with the Cardinals, Shipp provides a little power but really hasn't amounted to what was hoped when he was picked up. Damien Anderson: This will be his 5th year with the Cards and he has not found the endzone. He got 2 touches last year and is basically a practice squad guy.Obafemi Ayanbadejo: Full back who does a lot more blocking then ball carrying. 8:45 a.m.: The backfield joins the recievers for short passing drills. Warner and Navarre loft easy balls in to Edge, J.J. Arrington, Marcel Shipp and Damien Anderson on either side of the field for an easy warm up before stretching.8:40 a.m. : Big man Leonard Davis yells to the team, "What do you say, Crew?" as he takes the field and helmet-less walk throughs before the first whistle. Utility man Damien Anderson serves as Back for many of them. Anderson is heading into his 5th season with the Red Birds and has yet to score a TD.8:30 a.m.: "That's Edge!" one youngster whisper-screams to his buddy as Edgerrin takes the field. They have been naming off players as they stream by the gates onto the field. There is nothing like the excitement of young fans.

Also one of the hosts of the show said that from reading Green's body language when discussing Leinart, he was confident that a signing would happen soon. Take it for what it's worth.

08/2 Recap

RecapOther than a scary looking tumble taken by Anquan Boldin towards the end of practice, the receiving core looked solid as ever. Larry Fitz proved hard off-season work pays throughout the day, looking strong making some great catches. Boldin was tough and nimble, making inside moves and shrugging off line of scrimmage bumps by the corners. The dynamic duo is sure to impress this year.LeRon McCoy made a big impression today. He's really after it and seemed to out perform, or at least get more passes thrown his way, than current # 3, Bryant Johnson. McCoy could get some numbers this season if he keeps up this intensity. There was a story between the lines today. The D-Line frustrated the offense, not allowing much room for running during intersquad scrimmage. Frustrations boiled over during ISO drills and flashes of anger were seen. 11:00 a.m.: Whistle blows and another morning practice is in the books.10:55 a.m.: The fans are out in droves as practice winds down in full squad conflict. The O-Line is doing a better job protecting as legs get tired. McCoy grabs a Navarre bullet ending on a high note. The run block is still an issue late in practice. 10:48 a.m.: Offense/defense keeps going, breaking out into line and secondary. The receiving crew does a solid job against the DBs/Linebackers. Despite confusion on play alignment, Leonard Pope makes two big grabs. Eric Edwards doesn't have the gas to get under a Warner ball that Pope, despite his less than desirable pop of the line, could have grabbed. Fitzgerald smokes Gerald Ford on a big post cut and later fingertips a Warner pass inches from the ground. Boldin impresses with his power, but drops one ending a picture perfect day. LeRon McCoy continues to show that "confidence" he talked about, making some good grabs. Eric Green, David Macklin and Antrel Rolle stood out for the DBs. Tempers flair during the line drills ending in pushing and a unidentified (other side of the field) yelling, "same (expletive) team!" It gets heated in the trenches and speaks to the frustration of the O-Line today. 10:35 a.m.: Intersquad competition ends up with defensive advantage. Calvin Pace and Dockett blow through the rotating line. Both Leckey and Stepanovich took reps at center. Lutui moved to left guard today, struggling against Dockett. If this had been a drive, it would have been one or two first downs, ending in a punt. Warner thread the needed to hit tight end Eric Edwards and Boldin beat middle linebacker James Darling for a nice catch. Walters also made a nice cut against Antrel Rolle. The passing game was solid, when Warner/Navarre got enough time (3 seconds at best), but the D-Line owned the line of scrimmage and didn't allow Edge or Marcel Shipp down field. 10:22 a.m.: Offense again goes against a practice D, this time keying on the receivers. The routes are run about ¾ speed, focusing on form. The rooks don defense caps and lazily pursue a rotation of Fitz, Boldin, Johnson, Walters, Carlyle and McCoy.McCoy runs tight routes and hasn't dropped one yet today. He talked about an increased confidence from his first year at camp last season. This confidence is showing.Spurlock and Watkins join the mix for plays going to backs out of the back field and tight end routes. They still run their routes tight because they know the coaches are watching. 10:10 a.m. : Receivers get a break as the lines go at each other. Advantage: defense. Kendrick Clancy, Bertrand Berry, Darnell Docket and Chike Okeafor blow up plays and plug holes against a rotation of O-line.Nick Leckey provides all the snaps and the offense has trouble with the count. They get decent blocks on about a third of the running plays. Good thing to see the D-line being so effective, but as a fan mentioned about the offense: "looks like another year of this." Practice will only make the core better and against a powerhouse D-Line, the offense will improve in camp. Coach Green mentioned yesterday the offense is playing catch up with the 'D.' Looks like another day of that. 9:55 a.m. : The offense works through running plays against a practice defense with bags. A lot of three receiver sets with Boldin, Fitz and Johnson, as expected. TEs John Bronson and Leonard Pope get a lot of attention from the coaches. Pope lines up incorrectly and then Bronson jumps on a two count. Fitz runs some lazy slants which will be some mean blocks in live play. The rookie receivers stand in as DBs. 9:40 a.m. : The receivers join the DB's for some line of scrimmage contact. Good rookie match ups with a lot of contact as these guys self promote. Antrel Rolle just knocked around Walters. McCoy shed contact well during the drill, looking good early this morning.9:29 a.m. : They joint the QB's for some route drills. Coach Wilson singles out rookie Wilkins and uses Bryant Johnson's cuts as an example. Johnson is nimble and when he strides out, he's fast."Eyes up, stride out," Wilson chants during five yard quick hooks. 9:20 a.m.: Receivers start with downfield blocking drills. They move to shedding the defender at the line of scrimmage. There is an audible slap when Boldin slaps by Carlyle. Little big man, Troy Walters works out with Larry Fitzgerald. Although Walters is listed at 5' 8", Fitz seems a foot taller. Walters is quick though and this being his seventh year in the league gives him the tricks of the trade. 9:10 a.m. : After the team hit the sled, the positions break off. The receivers are working through agility drills to warm up.8:53 a.m. : While warm ups and stretching goes down we'll do a quick overview on the stars and newcomers of the receiving core. Not much more can be said about the dynamic duo of Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. They combined for 15 100-plus yard games last year, the most in the NFL. Boldin broke his own '03 receiving record with 1,402. Fitz beat him last year by seven yards. Fitz made the Pro Bowl and an obvious argument could be made on behalf of Anquan. With the addition of Edgerrin James, the stellar numbers might go down slightly, but the way they look at camp assures they will still get big stats. With the addition of a running game, their production may even increase with the threat of the big plays that are so important to a winning strategy according to Kurt Warner.Number 80, Bryant Johnson, plays three -in the three receiver scheme. Johnson is making good catches early in camp and is one of the fastest guys on the field. His return game is coming along and will continue to get his catches this season.Coming into his second year LeRon McCoy is, according to Coach Green, full of ambition and after the third spot. Troy Walters lends some exprience to the depth chart.Carlyle Holiday is another second year guy looking for some catches. Rookies Michael Spurlock, Damarius Bilbo, Todd Watkins and Greg lee round out the young receiving core. 8:29 a.m. : Players make their way to the field and are more talkative as the days go by. They are easing into another season of football, getting over nerves and starting to kid around.Larry Fitzgerald playfully pushes wide receivers Coach Mike Wilson as LeRon Reid laughs.

Here's my two cents of what's happened in Card camp so far, culled from radio reports and the web:

- Antrell Rolle looks like a beast. Should have a good year.

- O-Line does not look good at all. This is perhaps to be expected as new O-line coach Loney is effectively tearing down previous technique and starting from scratch. Something to keep an eye on for Edge owners.

- Pope looks really good and is being used a lot. Key here is his blocking. Will it develop enough for him to play a lot? Green seems to be challenging him to step up.

- Leron McCoy could beat out Bryant Johnson for WR3.

- Edge will be used a lot. Every coach interviewed preaches stressing the run and having a more balanced offense. That's easy to do though in August. If the Cards are winning/staying in games expect to see many more runs and much fewer passing attempts.

RT Oliver Ross injured his knee in this mornings practice. Likely a meniscus injury. Cards depth at OT is awful. Ross could be out awhile: 10 weeks perhaps.

Cards thinking about bringing in Lincoln Kennedy, if we doesn't sign with Dallas.

Ugh. Not good for the Cards or James owners.

O-Line not looking very good. It's early, but this is not good news for Edge owners:

Watching Edge running hard but getting caught in the backfield by Dockett, Berry, Okeafor or King made the fans moan. With Ross going down, it was just a sour feeling on the offensive side of the trenches.
Not only did the offensive line get a blow with the Ross injury, but they did not have a good practice this morning. The D-Line blew up run plays and left no place for Edgerrin James to go. They successfully ran the plays about a third of a time. They get an early in camp excuse for not having everything clicking, but it reminded of last years' troubles with the run. Jeremy Bridges and Fred Wakefield are trading reps is in place of Oliver Ross at right tackle while the offense run through plays.

and yet people are still picking Edge in the first round . . . remember folks, Indy was last # of carries for 10+ yds in 2005 . . .

I didn't still Boldin's name mentioned once. Is everything okay with him?
Oh yeah. Boldin has looked great. Both WRs have looked good in camp. The only thing of note was that the first day it was pouring down rain and Boldin slipped and went down hard. Caused the crowd to gasp, but we was just fine.Boldin should be solid this year. Key will be the O-line. They must improve. If the O-line stinks, the probablity of Warner getting hurt goes up. Should Navarre or Leinart (if he ever signs) step in, Boldin and Fitz's numbers will obviously take a turn for the worse.

08/30 Morning Report:

Morning practiceA little cloud cover greets the Cardinals who got to sleep in today with the 9:30 a.m. start. It will be a short practice, giving the guys relief during the grind of the week. Today we'll be keying on the defensive line. Recap Bertrand Berry leaves after staying after for a few more drills and a good and short practice is over. The D-Line had another impressive work out. The seem to it slow down from yesterday, where they embarrassed the O-Line during scrimmage. Kenny King, back from injury, looks quick but was getting blocked well by Reuber all day. Calvin Pace also made his case for reps, performing well in each of the drills. The starting four (Okeafor, Clancy, Dockett, Berry) looks pretty much game ready.Rookie stand out Gabe Watson is a big man with a lot of power. He blew center Shawn Lynch off the line and drove him back 3 yards doing drills. Look for Watson to get some time to plug holes this season. 11:11 a.m. : The short morning comes to an end.11:03 a.m.: The lines meet again, D-Line running stunts. The starters pull some big moves. Dockett and Okeafor run a cross stunt scary well. Okeafor destroys guard Jeremy Bridges with when he stunts inside. They are hitting. King still physical but Reuber continues to frustrate him. 10:50 a.m.: The practice breaks out into special teams. We get a preview of kick off/kick return. Antrel Rolle and Eric Green anchor first team kick off. The crowd cheers on Rackers' booming kicks. The altitude must be nice. 10:35 a.m. : Inter-squad match up shows a motivated O-Line. First team D-Line, made up of Berry, Clancy, Dockett and Okeafor are getting good penetration, but not as dominant as yesterday. Still, if they were allowed to really rush Warner, rather then penetrate and not move inside, some of the passes would not get off because of Okeafor and Berry's speed on the outside.King is also getting up field well but without the inside move, the full representation of progress cannot be seen. Antrel Rollle gets big air and makes a pick, the crowd cheers. 10:14: a.m. Lines meet up for basic blocking scheme drills. Rookie Gabe Watson is getting some serious reps with Berry. King comes in against offensive tackle Alan Reuber. King gets good penetration but Reuber gets the kick out block for a few reps. King then makes some good moves to the inside. Coach Larry Brooks talks to Berry about getting turned on the line, Berry responds, "but I turned him back." 10:00 a.m.: The defensive line goes through agility drills. Then they move to redirect drills with stand up dummies. End Antonio Smith looks fast, using a rip move (basically a swift upper cut to get under the lineman's arm followed with an elbow to get separation) and redirecting well.9:51 a.m.: Guard Rolando Cantu is carted off after stretching with his right knee wrapped. Could be more bad news for the Cardinals offensive line.9:44 a.m.: While the team goes through light workouts and stretching let's go over some key players on the D-Line.Bertrand Berry: Berry came out of the gate dominant in 2005, recording six sacks in eight games before a pectoral injury benched him for the remainder of the season. Look for big things from Mr. Berry this year. Darnell Docket: Mr. Indestructible, Docket has started all but one game in his two season career. He's a force on the inside and will continue to be big for the Cards' line. Chike Okeafor: Has started in 64 consecutive games and made 24 sacks over the last three seasons. The veteran on the starting line, going into his 8th season. Kendrick Clancy: Replacing Calvin Pace, who has moved to SAM lineback, Clancy is looking good inside. Kenny King: Coming off two year's of injury, King looks to make big numbers this season. The last time he played was 2003 after being selected in the 3rd round in the Draft. Two years on injured reserve has to make him hungry to play. The line is rounded out as of today with Langston Moore, Tim Bulman, Antonio Smith, Anton Palepoi, rookie Gabe Watson, Jonathon Lewis, and A.J. Schalbe. 9:28 a.m. : Carlos Dansby is still in jersey and shorts and questions if he'll be able to practice in Flagstaff still lingers. Trying to get back from thumb surgery, he works out on the side and watches practice.

Green Interview:

Green talksCoach Dennis Green was generally happy with today's practice, having worked a two-minute drill and increased tempo.Green said about Matt Leinart's absence from camp, "Once you get through the first week of camp, that's tough." He is also concerned about Leinart missing the closed mock game the Cardinals are having on Saturday. The Oliver Ross' diagnosis will not be made until tomorrow. Depending on the situation, the Cards may opt to bring in another tackle. Green mentioned Fred Wakefield by name as a fill in."We should be concerned, we don't want to lose a starting player at this particular time," Green said about Ross. The effect is heavy, especially in the right tackle position, and Green will make a decision of how to respond once Ross' condition is official.Green also said Bryant Johnson is the "front runner" for the third receiver. He said wanted LeRon McCoy and Troy Walters to get playing time. He said the team is working hard and he's pleased overall with today's workout.

Here's a post from someone that went up to training camp. Lots of good info:

I thought I'd pass along a few humble observations in regard to Cardinals training camp:1) The defensive-line is the deepest position on the team and, if healthy, might be the strength of this team. The starting four look good but it's the back-ups that caught my eye! Kenny King is a football player. His "freak" injuries have set him back but he's a football player. Before it's all said and done, he may replace Okeafor as the LDE. After three-days, Langston Moore is the most impressive lineman in camp. He's a little butterball and reminds me of Warren Sapp - quick feet, good hands and has the motor of a '57 Chevy. This guy is killin' folks right now.Antonio Smith is playing like his very life depends on it and people are noticing. Along with Moore, he is routinely ruining people and looks like the real deal when rushing the passer. The Cards will use him in 3rd and Obvious situations, replacing a defensive-tackle, to rush the passer. The young guns, Gabe Watson and Jonathan Lewis, have done some good things as well. Watson won't help the Cards increase their sack total but he is a load to move - a real-life space-eater. Lewis rushes the passer better but has had some mental lapses, jumping offsides fairly often. He'll learn.Although the Cards say they're going to simplify their running game, only using a few running plays, they installed a counter-trap (using their stretch-play action) and a toss (blocked the same as their outside-zone play). It is my sincere hope they stick to their original plan and don't make the same mistake they did last year: trying to combine zone-schemes with power-schemes. Why don't people see the beauty Alex Gibbs has created in Denver and Atlanta? Simply amazing...Calvin Pace looks great, making plays all over the field, holding up at the point-of-attack. The Cardinals defensive coaches are ecstatic with what they've seen from him. Moving Dansby to WLB may happen sooner than I thought. Clancy believes offenses will not be able to block him with a back which makes him, from the offensive point-of-view, a down-lineman. The Cards can call their defense of 4-3, but it's really a five-down if the offense blocks Pace with an OT. And this creates problems for the center, placing him on an island in most protections. Not good...Gerald Hayes may be the best tackler on the team in terms of delivering a blow. James Darling is a valuable reserve and I think it's only a matter of time before he's demoted.Leonard Pope blocked better this morning than he has the last couple of days but he's going to struggle here. He needs to fill out a little more and get in the weight-room. Deuce Lutui is not ready. His set is poor and he misses often on the stab which gets his feet all messed up. Do not panic, but unless something happens over the next couple of weeks he will not be ready to contribute this year. Milford Brown is strong, powerful and has a good, strong stab. His feet look a tad slow but he's locked down a couple of solid lineman more than once. In my opinion, he needs a solid offensive-tackle playing next to him. Will this happen? One can only guess. But I am encouraged...Marcel Shipp has to be number two...Fred Wakefield was having a very good camp until defenders started to bull-rush him. He must play lower. The Edge looks great, of course. If you have a chance to see him up close, look at the thickness of his lower body. It is no mystery why he breaks tackles. All-in-all, not bad right now...not bad.

One more camp report:

Yesterday at camp I was impressed with Walters...for a while I was thinking...wow, this guy is little. But he runs solid, aggressive routes and is very fast. I was impressed with him and he was a guy I wasn't even trying to look for.I thought JJ looked to be improving his pass-catching and isn't hesitating as the ball came like he did last year...he's catching in stride. He had a hard run I saw that I first thought was edge and was suprised was JJ. We didn't have a great view of the live action so only caught some of it.Rackers was booming kicks yesterday and he hit a 60 yarder that he caught very awkwardly and got very little lift on, yet it still went through. He's a stud. The secondary was looking pretty good in what small views I could see from across the field. Very active and high flying.Navarre looked decent and seems to be trying to work on his angled release. He was throwing some nice deep balls too. Edge is a beast...his legs are tree trunks and he's got deceptively quick acceleration up close. Boldin runs some of the tightest routes possible, he's got fantastic footwork. The QBs did some footwork drills right in front of us, and it was clear (as abomb pointed out) that Warner's feet are great...there was a HUGE difference in his footwork versus the rest of them.Pace is going to shine at LB, I'm thinking. TRM (The Real McCoy) runs good routes and is very fast, though he slipped on the grass twice. I'm excited to see him progress even more.Afterwards, we met with Femi, JJ and Coach Green and gave them well-wishes and told them that we are endzone ticketholders, and we look forward to them being down there quite often this year. They were all three very cool and JJ shook my little girl's hand and told her he loved her little cards cheerleader outfit. He gave me dap when I said even though he isn't going to get tons of carries, I hope to see him bring some TDs to the endzone crowd. Abomb told my 3 year old son when we met Femi to "shake hands with a real football player" and Femi got a kick out of that. Green seemed a bit beat by the long day and was cool as always but was ready to get done and go talk to the team. All in all, it was a fantastic day in Flag...we hit some old haunts from my college days, saw where we used to live and work (though my dorm is now torn down) and had a great time in great weather. I used to work for the Cards Crew in college, and it really brought back a lot of good memories

RT Oliver Ross injured his knee in this mornings practice. Likely a meniscus injury. Cards depth at OT is awful. Ross could be out awhile: 10 weeks perhaps.Cards thinking about bringing in Lincoln Kennedy, if we doesn't sign with Dallas.Ugh. Not good for the Cards or James owners.
how good is/was Ross?

Ross was the big-ticket O-lineman that the Cards signed last year to play right tackle. He was suppose to infuse the O-line with a mean streak. He didn't work out well at all last year. He played very poorly, to the point that I remember screaming at my TV that he was stealing from the Cardinals orginization. With new O-line coach Steve Loney, the O-line was being retaught and their was hope that Ross could find his game. Some fans had given up on him, saying that the injury was a blessing in disguise. We'll see. The depth on the O-line is not good. They've been playing better in practice of late, so we'll see.

Here is a really good Q&A with a poster on the Cards board that has been to camp every day with his observations:

Did you happen to see LeRon McCoy?This kid might be the most improved player from a year ago. He has phenomenal tools and I can see him maturing day-to-day. His confidence is growing and, right now, he looks like the steal of last year's draft. How has the defensive secondary looked?Antrelle Rolle is the real-deal. He intercepted a pass in Team (Red Zone) Period that would have been a sure touchdown. He went up and got it (high).Adrian Wilson looks like a motivated, determined player. He plays very well in the box but needs to show the rest of the league he can line-up in a cover 2 look and properly defend his half of the field. If he accomplishes this, hello Hawaii.I love Robert Griffith but he has slowed. He is still a tremendous force in terms of leadership and getting the secondary configured correctly, something that should not be overlooked. David Macklin is a competitor. But he’s always going to be someone you’re always trying to replace. There are many pro’s whom have suffered from this malaise but they seem to have long careers.Eric Green looks like he’s coming along nicely. How well he does this pre-season will determine if he can unseat Macklin. Time will tell.I like this Francisco kid – a lot. He shows know fear and drives on the ball, making a couple of really nice plays yesterday. From what I saw, he reads patterns very well. Smart and tough is never a bad combination…Who is taking the most snaps at RT today?Fred Wakefield. They tried Elton Brown there…disaster. They tried Jeremy Bridges there, splitting time with Wakefield, and I wonder why? There’s NO comparison between the two. Up until yesterday, I thought Wakefield had progressed tremendously. Although he plays a little too high, he had a good set, good stab and solid understanding of what it takes to defeat a DE. Then, they started to bull rush him and because he “plays a little too high,” he was exposed. If he learns to sit his butt down and lock-out, he might surprise us all…but…?Given your comments about the DL, I couldn’t help but wonder about Dockett???Cruisin.’ Too-cool-for-school…what a shame. This is what happens to a player who thinks he has arrived: you stop getting better, and when you stop getting better…there’s only one way to go. Down.I only hope the money he stands to make this year may motivate him to play hard. But make no mistake, this guy plays the game for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully, this will change and he’ll be a Cardinal for a long, long time. But as it stands now, no way.Any word on Blackstock? Haven't heard a peep about him this offseason. Wondering how he's progressed...This guy reminds me of the defensive version of JJ Arrington. Great athlete, not very physical, and looks flat-out scared at times. What’s your impression of speedy LB Brandon Johnson? He’s got a long way to go. He’s a long-strider and doesn’t play with his feet up under him, which isn’t good for a linebacker. It’s still early but that seems to be a fundamental flaw in his game. What have you seen from Dansby at training camp? Are the coaches riding him hard? Does he appear to be a leader out there?Dansby has not practiced which might be a blessing in disguise. Calvin Pace is getting all of Dansby’s reps and it’s seemingly paying off. If Pace continues to prove his worth at SAM, Dansby goes to Will and we all have a Merry Christmas. The coaches aren’t riding him but the strength/conditioning coach is. I am not concerned about Dansby missing any time. He’s a football player and he’ll be ready when it counts.Remember, take this with a grain-of-salt; it's merely one-man's opinion. DO NOT PANIC...it's still early...

08/04 Morning Practice Recap:

10:25 a.m. : Besides Coach Loney, Zauner is the talker of the coaches. It has to be right every time and he lets his players know exactly what he wants. They are running through punts out of the end zone. Scott Player seems very practiced at this… I wonder why?10:18 a.m. : They move to field goal practice and run some sort of version of the swinging gate. Aligning the line right and directing the snap to rookie Michael Spurlock. He scrambles and finds no other than Neil Rackers in the flat. The crowd is delighted. I, for one, hope that one stays on the drawing board.10:13 a.m. : The team moves into punt practice. Rolle set to return. Between Rolle, Johnson and little big man, Troy Walters, the Cards' return core looks strong. It would be great to see Walters return a few, he is fast downfield and his lateral movements just impress. Hard target to tackle.10:01 a.m. : LeRon McCoy makes a drop off his hands and is irate. This kid has is really going for it. The route was tight and fast, he just didn't finish. 10:00 a.m.: They run through a goal line play, line goes heel to heel blocking left to create space at the two hole for Edge.9:55 a.m.: Big plays during inter-squad scrimmage. Fitzgerald makes an acrobatic catch, getting cheers from the crowd and a fan standing up and yelling, "That's why you make Pro Bowl, baby!"Antrel Rolle then jumps a route and INTs Warner for the third time this week. The crowd gets loud for a smattering of a about 150 in the stands. 9:49 a.m. : Even though another back up QB is in the spotlight (the elusive number seven), something needs to be said about John Navarre's play. He has thrown heat all week and his footwork looks good. Of course just as I sing his praises, he airs over McCoy's head and blows an audible. 9:41 a.m. : The offense has moved to slow pass plays. The Cardinals must improve their pass blocking and keep Kurt off the ground. Warner's health is a big concern, since he hasn't played a complete season in years. Brown comes from a Texans line that allowed the most sacks in the league last year, but could be argued he was a standout on said line. 9:31 a.m. : The helmet and shorts puts analysis of the O-Line at a disadvantage, but review of the week gives us positives and 'same ol' same ol'' feelings from previous seasons. Wednesday showed a line getting beat bad by the starting defensive group. Any run plays taking a little development finished with James with no where to go. The next day, the line came out with a little more oomph and did a better job holding their own. James expressed the timing was coming together and Dockett said that they, "were hitting." 9:22 a.m. : The starting line are doing ½ speed run throughs with a practice offense. These are big men. Size is not the issue The starters Wakefield, Ross, Stepanovich, Brown and Davis throw down an average weight of 325 lbs. Many of the plays being run pulls either guard Brown or Wells, with Marcel Shipp hitting the 5 or 6 holes. 9:15 a.m. : The Line work a block-release to second level drill with hand bags. Coach Steve Loney is doing a lot of technique critique between goes. Last year the Cardinals finished last in the league in rushing, averaging a dismal 71 yard per game. Loney has a challenge this year, except for Milford Brown, the line is the same from last year. He has to draw out better performances from his line and through technique training, make them a cohesive core that can get Edgerrin James downfield. Right now, the line is going through a basic walk through of different plays. Brown is doing a lot of pull blocking, a strength of his. 9:05 a.m. : While stretching and light warm ups go on, let's do a quick run down of the (healthy) O-Line.Center duties have been split between Nick Lekey and starter Alex Stepanovich. Stepanovich started every game of 2004, but had injury trouble in the '05 season, giving Lekey nine starts last season. Both have had pretty good camps in the middle, Stepanoivich gets the ball up a little faster and will likely start barring injury.Guard Milford Brown was brought in this season from the Texans, a line that allowed a lot of sacks lasts season. Darnell Docket, fellow FSU alum, said it wasn't Brown's fault. Brown is great downfield blocker and continues to develop his pass protection. Big man Reggie Wells is the other guard.Tackle Leonard Davis enters the final year in his contract and has the potential of being one of the best linemen in the game. The void left by Oliver Ross' injury will be filled by Fred Wakefield and as Coach Green mentioned yesterday, the Cardinals may bring in someone to fill the void. Rookie Deuce Lutui could also see some playing time this season if he continues to perform in the next few weeks. 8:39 a.m.:Minutes before practice begins the week has hit the Cards with a few injuries. DL Kenny King continues his run of bad luck with his wrist. He's missed the past two years with injury and is back in the Valley getting a reinjury evaluated. Oliver Ross is still being evaluated and could miss up to 10 weeks with a torn meniscus. King has worked hard to come back and Ross is an anchor, so both injuries hurt the cause. Karlso Dansby continues to be out with a thumb injury. Rolando Cantu left practice witha knee injury yesterday and hasn't reported to practice today.

08/05 Scrimmage Notes:

These were taken by a fan and posted to a local Cards board. I've highlighted the points of fantasy interest.

positives-

* LeRon McCoy caught my eye the most. He was my MVP of the scrimmage- ran great crisp routes and found ways on every play to create distance from the DB. His quickness and acceleration really caught my eye as well. He had a great day

* Todd Watkins was impressive. He was taller then I expected but was as fast as billed. He has got to be the fastest guy on the team. Made a couple great catches in traffic. He'll be a project but he has major potential. IMO, should focus on filling out more

* Greg Lee made a great catch on the last play of the game. He is the identical size as Watkins and could use to get in the weight room. Is very intriguing as well.

* Warner threw the ball as you would expect. Was throwing a good deep ball, hooking up with McCoy a couple times and Q once. Looked solid

* Neil Rackers was kicking the absolute crap outta the ball. He had 3 touchbacks on KO's and was unreal in the field goal competition. He didn't miss a kick and made bombs from 54, 58, 61, and 64! Granted, there was no line or rush in front of him but it was very impressive. The one he made from 64 would have been good from 70+

* Gabe Watson is enormous. He's tall and extremely wide. There's no way you can't double team him and he'll prove to be huge piece to our DL. With pads on he'll be even more intimidating. Johnathon Lewis is a big boy too but is much shorter.

* Leonard Pope looks like Shaq out there. If he doesn't have more than 5 TD catches this year I'll be very surprised. If Warner can throw a good jump ball, there's no one in the league who can stop him. With Pope and Edge, our red zone problems should be out the window.

* Edge looked decent. He was one of those guys that seemed to be going through the motions which is 100% fine with me. He was very shiffty and I love how he commits to the hole he's running through. It's easy to see how he falls forward for 2-3 yards on every run! He dropped a rather easy pass out of the backfield and got pretty pissed about it. He's gonna be awesome!

* Darnell Dockett looked great. He defelected a couple passes and was making great penetration. I loved how he was getting his hands up and making plays. Bertrand Berry has the best snap timing I have ever seen. He exploded off the line on nearly every single snap.

* Rolle and Wilson were everywhere. Wilson seemed to be much more vocal then I've seen him in the past. He was clearly running the defense and the DB's were on the same page. This year he will take his game to the next level

* As for special teams, Player punted the ball good. Spurlock was returning all KO's and seems to be the favorite. Rolle was returning punts which I pray to god isn't the case in the season. It was hard to tell with Spurlock since there was no tackling but he looked fast and shiffty

Negatives-

* Dansby was in street clothes and observing. He looked much skinnier then usual which was very noticeable. With pads on on, he might look the same as last season but it seems like he's not close to ready for the season.

* Navarre looked horrible. He spent more time dancing behind the line then anything else. He was inaccurate and looked nervous. Missed several wide open recievers, one being Bryant Johnson who seemed to get rather upset at Navarre after the play. Better get Leinart in quick

* Rohan Davy looked even worse. Holds on to the ball way too long. Made many mental errors

* It was tough to see how the OL performed but they seemed to do average. They seemed to be disorganized at times which I'm sure will get better as Loney instills his theories. I really wish we could have got a tackle with that extra 12 million

* Troy Walter didn't impress me at WR. McCoy was much better as T Walters dropped a couple catchable balls. If Walters can work at punt returner then everythings fine

How much did they increase the offer to Leinart by?
