Carlos Marmol - New Cubs Closer? (1 Viewer)

Cubs manager Lou Pinella is considering making Marmol the closer and moving Ryan Dempster to the starting rotation, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Spin: Marmol threw a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's game in a non-save situation. Apparently this plan has been postponed a few days after Dempster pitched well on Friday. Pinella has said he has big changes for his pitching staff, but has been coy about details. This news may make picking up Marmol worth a shot in deep leagues, as it looks like he'll play a big role in the bullpen even if not moved to closer.
ESPN LinkGiven that he has SP eligibility in both ESPN and Yahoo leagues...could be a solid pick-up.

Dumpster, on the other hand...

:fishing: He started almost exclusively in the minors. But he does have a good strikeout rate. And struggled last year as a starter for the Cubs... but had some nice starts.Anyone Cubs' fans know what kind of pitches he throws?

He has a mean but wild slider and a fastball in the low- to mid-90s.

He looked really good yesterday, but if guys don't swing at that slider, you have to worry about walks and wild pitches. Nasty pitch though.

Sorry 'bout that. Here's the link: ESPN

So is he a two-pitch guy, or does he have more to offer? If he's limited, he may be more productive with limited exposure... i.e., the bullpen.

Here's his scouting report from Cubshub:
Pitching: Marmol has two pitches that are MLB ready, and that's his fastball and slider. Not only does Carlos throw a good moving sinker around 90-94 but he mixes in a rising fastball that has touched 97 mph this year. His other two pitches that he uses are his curveball and changeup, both are still in developmental stages yet he threw them in his MLB debut. At this stage in the game, Marmol can get by in the pen with just his fastball and slider but if he wishes to compete for a starting role in the future, those two pitches are a must. Despite his control concerns, he is not afraid to throw any of his pitches in any count, as seen in his MLB debut when throwing a curveball in a 3-2 count to Bigbie notching up the K. When Marmol is used in short durations, he tends to go all out, holding nothing back in terms of velocity. Which is why in his debut, there were a many pitches hitting 95 or more on the gun. When he starts, he smartly holds the smoke down so he has something left in the tank for later in the game.
Sounds like classic closer stuff. But we'll have to wait and see.

I looked at picking him up today and passed. Noticed a few hours ago that he was snagged in my 16 teamer. I think he could earn the position but a lot could happen between now and then. Dempster has to slip up a few more times and Marmol has to perform when called upon.

Also, Angel Guzman's name is being thrown out there as a possible closer candidate. This is turning into a bit of a mess. I don't see Pinella going with a guy as raw as Marmol this early on. While he's had decent results in his last two appearances, he has had some trouble finding the strike zone. Not what you want from a closer. I'm rooting for him though.

I think Angel has better tools. He's been rostered in my league though. Marmol can get the job but it's not going to be an instant switch for him to end up in the closer's role.

I do. Pinella is letting players play themselves out of the job they had under Baker. Theriot and Pagan have played themselves into everyday roles, while Izturus and Jacque Jones have found the bench. Pinella is always tinkering. If people have an extra spot for Guzman or Marmol, it could be wise to stash them.

Sounds like this has some wheels

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times are both reporting that the Cubs are preparing Angel Guzman to hopefully take over the closer role.Current closer, Ryan Dempster, will reportedly serve as a mentor for Guzman the next several weeks as Dempster attempts to convert from closer to a starter. Guzman has the stuff to be a closer, but we question if he has the mental makeup for the role. If he is available in your league he is certainly worth taking a gamble on.

Tremendous Upside

########!!! Pinella!

CHICAGO CUBS

1st Chair: Ryan Dempster

2nd Chair: Angel Guzman, Carlos Marmol

Skinny: Rumors that manager Lou Piniella was going to move Dempster into the rotation leaked out over the weekend, causing fantasy owners to drink the Marmol-ade – Marmol and Guzman were considered the two most likely successors to Dempster's vacated role. But, then Piniella threw another curveball out late Sunday when he essentially pulled the plug on the Dempster-to-the-rotation plan. Said Dempster about his conversation with Piniella on Sunday: "We just kind of talked about things. For right now, I'm going to go back down there and close. He knows I'd like to start eventually. It might happen next year. It might happen this year. Who knows?" Dempster shed further light on the situation and provided a hint that perhaps Guzman has the leg up in the competition to replace him down the road when he said, "Just looking at our situation of not having somebody who's really had any experience closing … and also, when you ask a young guy to go down there, especially a young guy like Guzman to close, [you have] to see how his arm responds. It might be a week. It might be the rest of the year. Who knows?" Guzman is probably a decent speculative add this week as you watch to see if this situation really is settled down for now.

What's the latest here?
If Dempster is moved, Guzman is the better option. He is more experienced, has the better stuff, and all of the stats support Guzman over Marmol. I actually just spent a good portion of my latest podcast discussing this should you care to listen here
