Carolina a 3-4 in 2012? (1 Viewer)

Happened across this article, which quotes McDermott as saying he and Rivera want to evolve the defense into a 3-4. Of particular concern is:

"Changing to a 3-4 base defense would likely require a change in personnel at some positions. On Sunday, the Panthers used Ron Fields at nose tackle and Terrell McClain and Greg Hardy at ends. Dan Connor and James Anderson were the middle linebackers, allowing Charles Johnson and Antwan Applewhite to stand up at outside linebacker."

I'm concerned what this may mean for the long-term outlook of Hardy and Johnson. Thoughts?

Jebus they can't keep the three starters they have healthy on a regular basis. how are they gonna do it with 4? As a Beason owner I hate the thought of it.

Just fast-watched the defensive snaps of the Panthers against Peterson's Vikings and did a tally sheet.

I counted 57 snaps out of a normal 4-3 where 4 linemen were in a three-point stance. Another 2 snaps looked as some 4-3 subpackages for me too.

I counted "only" 3 plays out of the base 3-4, with Charles Johnson in a two-point stance in 2 out them. Another 2 plays in nikel packages looked out of the 3-4 for me too, one of those saw Johnson drop in coverage.

In all, fewer then 8% of 3-4 formation for this game, which is encouraging for Hardy and Charles Johnson owners ?

Applewhite played a lot as a 4-3 DE, but when Hardy was in, he always pressured the QB quite well (from what I saw, and his name was often mentioned by the tv guys ^^). Hardy saw some snaps as DT too, but that's not news, happened in last games too.

Thanks, good info--that's definitely encouraging for now. We'll have to see if that percentage continues to grow. I sure hope not.
