Carolina QB situation (1 Viewer)

Does anyone have an educated guess about the QB in Carolina right now? Delhomme looked absolutely terrible. Is he entrenched as the starter or is he on a short leash at this point? Also, if he doesn't step up and play better who is the likely beneficiary...Moore or Feely?

Thanks for any insight you may have. Those of us in 2 QB leagues really appreciate it.

(sorry if there was some discussion on this already. I couldn't find it if there was)

we're stuck with Jake for at least a few more weeks. If he continues to struggle into week 4, then you MIGHT see a change.

Jake was signed to a large new contract in the off season and the organization had no intention of anything other than going forward with their man Jake. He actually had a very good QB rating for the regular season last year and the team went 12-4. His playoff blunder was well publicized and I think most concluded that it was an anomaly. It was possibly the worst game by any QB in the history of the NFL, ceertainly one of the worst. One bad game, right?

Enter game one of this year, and he does the exact same thing again!!

Lets look at some numbers from these 2 games.

Jake completed 33 of 51 passes(64.7 %). Not bad except that 9 of those 33 completions(27%) were to the opponent. Add in the fact that he also fumbled twice for another two turnovers.

When you call a pass play here's your risk/reward.

incompletion (35%)

turnover (22%)

completion (47%)

Or this.......

Jakes passing yardage for 2009= 73

Eagles int return yardage 2009= 69

To get back to your question I don't think anybody has a clue what to do. John Fox said Jake is starting this week, but didn't follow it up with any ringing endorsement. My guess is that if Jake messes up again they will have no choice but go to the back-ups. Probably Moore since they have always raved about how much they like him, and Feely doesn't even know the system.

I also just decided I never want to play in a 2 QB league.

We're? You're a Redskins fan. Delhomme is on a short leash. Hopefully he will do better against the Falcons. Right now his confidence is shot, so he needs a good game to pull him out of whatever funk he is in. Also the offensive line needs to do their work too. They didn't protect Jake well at all against Philadelphia, which they have admitted they did a poor job last weekend. Moore is #2 on the depth chart, but Fox has said he isn't going to announce who the #2 is yet until this weekend, although it is more than likely Moore since he knows the system and has worked with the players in the past.

I'm a Skins lifelong fan, but growing up in NC, I've supported the Panthers since year one (except when they play the Skins)

I think they made a mistake passing on Garcia. We'll see.
I never heard if they passed on Garcia, or whether the Eagles beat them to him. I'm suprised that the Eagles wouldn't want Feely more since he had been in their system already.

Garcia had as well and Garcia >>>>>> Feeley
word in Philly is that the Eagles went after Feeley first and Feeley chose Carolina. The Philly job is probably 4 weeks at most so it makes sense from Feeley's perspective. Not sure why Carolina chose Feeley over Garcia unless they feel AJ is a better caretaker QB in 2010 if Jake continues to implode and they've lost faith in Moore

I heard Feeley turned the Eagles down. He was "safe", and then he wasn't. When a potential employer has a track record of lying to your face, you don't go back there.

I could see that, and if he knew he had a chance to go to Carolina, he would know he could end up with a chance to start based on Jakes performance. In Philly he definitely has no future, nor does Garcia.

I don't remember exactly what Jon Ritchie said this morning but it was something along the lines of "I played with him for a year and saw him at practice every day." paraphrased "he wasn't too good" and "I was shocked when Miami gave up a 2nd for him."

UHG!

Sounds pretty messy. I don't think I'm willing to waste a waiver on that yet. May have to see what happens this week. Problem is sometimes you have to be ahead of the game when it comes to waivers. Sounds like Moore may have the advantage though just because he knows the offense.

I haven't watched Delhomme play recently, and from reading this thread, I assume his value couldn't get any lower. Now, it seems as though there is good reason for that if his hold on the starting QB job is in jeopardy. But I can't help but wonder if he is a great buy low. I mean, he still has a great WR in Steve Smith, a good O-line, and a great running attack to back him up. Is there any hope that he could not just hold onto the QB job but actually turn things around?

watch and cringe. it truly was a horrid performance. (then again the eagles blitzes have confounded better qbs than del homey too)

The status, in the words of John Fox: "It is, what it is". Delhomme is the starter. Hurney and Fox can't afford for him not to be as they just gave him the huge contract. Think about it this way, from an owners perspective, Richardson just watched Hurney and fox give Delhomme the big contract. They're tied to Delhomme now. Their season lives or dies on Delhomme. If they pull the plug at any time barring an injury, it's tantamount to them admitting they made a huge mistake (which most locals believe they did anyway). If the season doesn't pan out, you'll hear chants of "Cowher!" coming from Charlotte so loud, that he'll be able to hear them in Raleigh. Truthfully, I think this is one of the reasons they haven't tried Moore out further. Carolina has a good nucleus of players and can reach the playoffs with them. Moore played decently when pushed into action, but he's still kinda raw. They'll need to find out what they have in him eventually. If Jake were to be injured and they basically have to write the season off, I think it'll be Moore who starts and Feely being the veteran backup. Until that time, we'll live or die with Jake, and it pains me to say that.

Folks Jake guided this team to 12 wins last year, I guarantee there won't be another game like this past week. I see them taking some plays out of the book and running the ball even more and let jake just manage the game and not allow him to try and make big plays or forse things.

As far as the situation there is no situation...Matt Moore is not a starting NFL caliber QB and AJ Feeley well is AJ Feely....as bad as Jake played Sunday and last year in the AZ playoff game I still would much rather have him than either of the other two options. As far as Garcia he is a west coast offense guy, he would have had minimal value here in this system.

I am a die hard Panther fan and have stuck up for Jake because for every game like this past Sunday he has had 10 he has won for us. But it's gotta stop this week or I may change my mind.

I hope Jake turns it around. He is the heart and soul of the team, and if things don't get better, it's going to bring the spirit down among the team. Those guys love him. The OL spoke up about last weeks game too. Here is an article on their website from yesterday.CHARLOTTE -- Carolina's offensive line stepped up to protect quarterback Jake Delhomme early this week. But the group did not expect the attackers to be onlookers and interested parties who lit up message boards, radio phone lines and Twitter pages with a fusillade of barbs aimed at the quarterback. "You obviously feel awful," said center Ryan Kalil. "That's why I'm talking to you guys right now, so we can clear that all up. "A lot of pressure is put on Jake, as the average Joe would view it, but in reality, it's kind of tough for him to make plays when he's got guys in his face and guys are tipping balls and the pocket's breaking down because we're not on the same page." Delhomme took responsibility, but so did Kalil and his fellow linemen. The quarterback's struggles were more easily identifiable and quantifiable: four interceptions and 10 incompletions in seven attempts. But there were statistics for the offensive line that not only registered its struggles Sunday -- but illustrated the drastic, unexpected contrast between its performance against the Eagles and its work last year. In pass protection, the line conceded five sacks and 10 quarterback hits on Sunday -- far beyond their per-game averages of just 1.25 sacks and 2.69 quarterback hits in 2008. They also allowed one quarterback hit every 3.9 pass plays Sunday, a rate more than twice as frequent as in 2008, when just one of every 10.1 pass plays ended with the passer absorbing a hit. "I think the most frustrating part (is) that mistakes are being made that we haven't made before," Kalil said. "Maybe early last season, but they're things we put well behind us in the past. Easy things." The simple explanation for the line's difficulty in keeping Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore upright would revolve around the Eagles' myriad and creative blitz packages. But neither Kalil nor left tackle Jordan Gross said that Philadelphia's tactics justified how the offensive line played. "They ran a defense with linebackers as the defensive ends and ends as the (strong-side) and (weak-side) linebackers, and that just creates mismatches with our running backs," said Gross. "That's simple stuff we should have been fine with." "It was pretty much on us," added Kalil. "There was nothing we hadn't seen or worked against before. It was just a matter of communicating it out to everybody in a quicker fashion." That responsibility starts with Kalil's slot. "I think a lot of times, we're trying to read too much instead of just playing," he said. "Towards the end of the (quarterback's) cadence, we're trying to navigate where everybody's got to go, and it's too late at that point. Now it just turns into a guessing game, where hopefully they know this or that, so that's what happens. Then we got out of rhythm, got into bad situations and we know they're bringing pressure every play. "Hopefully we won't get in that situation again. I don't think we will. I think we're an experienced enough line to where we can fix those things real quickly and put it behind us." That experience, and the fact that the starting five up front returned intact, made Sunday's outcome so stunning. "We claim to be a standard of this team as an offensive line," said Gross, "(but) we've got to do a lot better." And they know that it's likely the Falcons will try the same tactics Philadelphia employed. Others will do the same, until the line proves it can stop them. "It's only going to get worse, going to Atlanta," Gross said. "They did a great job pressuring (Miami quarterback Chad) Pennington (on Sunday) and they're going to be loving what they see on film. "We've made our bed, and now we've got to lay in it. The only thing we can do is come back with some productive drives and not get in that situation again."
