Carolina RB cap hits (1 Viewer)

Holy Schneikes

Footballguy
Just read that Carolina may need to call up a practice squad guy just to field a tail-back next week. So out of curiosity, I looked up the cap hits for these guys:

in 2014:

Williams: 6M

Stewart: 4.6M

Tolbert: 3.4M

Total: 14M for a team that ranks 29th in rushing yards and rushing average right now.

in 2015:

Williams: 6.3M

Stewart: 8.3M

Tolbert: 3.4M

Total: 18M

Amazing. Both Williams and Stewart are both signed through 2017. What kills me even more than the terrible initial signings, is the the fact that instead of admitting their mistake, taking their lumps and moving on, they decided to restructure them both. Now it will be virtually impossible to cut Stewart in 2015, and cutting Williams doesn't help them either.

I believe the MINIMUM cap hit for the RBs next year is about 15.5M, assuming they cut Tolbert.

And none of that includes the fact that realistically, they need to actually bring in a healthy, effective, running back at some point.

Sadly, this is like the third year running of this well compensated backfield. Likely, team brass hasn't been willing to bite the bullet, but I'm sure that will change next year.

Marty Hurney, ladies and gentlemen,. When everyone asked why we weren't going after any bigger names in free agencies, the answer is pretty much always going to be Marty Hurney's poor cap management.

Thankfully, David Gettleman is incredible at finding quality/cheap talent...and the effects from Marty Hurney will be over relatively soon when those terrible contracts run out.

I can prety much guarantee that Stewart and Denagelo would have been cut by now if their cap hit wouldn't be just as bad/worse if we let them go. Essentially, there is nothing the team can do but eat the contracts and hope they play well.

Tolbert will probably hang around though. He's worth every penny.

They may not be able to swing it. Stewart represents 13.6M in dead money next year if they cut him. That's a tough pill to swallow for a team that would will need to sign Newton and several other guys at some point soon.

This isn't shocking for long time fans of the team, and it's not the fault of current management. Hurney saddled them with an abyss when it came to contracts he handed out to "protect the core" of a 2-14 team.

GMan's only option has been to restructure and attempt to get by year to year. Not only are DW and Stew overpaid, they're impossible to cut from a cap perspective. It's an awful situation that's going to take another few years to resolve, sadly.

That was an insane mess for years. From the draft picks, to the re-signings, to bringing in Tolbert, to the re-structuring. It actually boggles the mind.

yeah, that's been a popular topic for a couple years, since those guys signed, and it's just funny because it's such a contrast to how the rest of the league approaches the position, and then add in how their o-line has fallen apart.

here are the current top 10 cap hits at the position next year, with lynch and peterson being question marks

If the Panthers release Stewart next season as a June 1st cut they would save 2 million against their cap. Then there is 6 million in dead money for two years running. There are also some options in Stewart's contract that affect his cap number and dead money number so it depends on how those are handled as well.

BTW with his last restructure Williams contract voids after the 2015 season. It also cut his base salary giving about 7 million in cap space back over the last couple of years. If the Panthers wait until the contract voids then they will have to pay 2 million in dead money in 2016 and 2017.
