Panthers agree to terms with QB David Carr

PAT YASINSKAS

Quarterback David Carr, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers early Friday morning, according to a league source.

Carr, 27, made the decision after returning from a two-day visit with the Seattle Seahawks and meeting with his wife at their California home late Thursday night. Carr had visited with the Panthers Monday and Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available.

The Panthers obviously don’t view Carr as the typical backup. Coach John Fox has said several times that Jake Delhomme, who struggled at times last season, remains the starter. But Carr, who has made 75 career starts, could provide a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles again.

That’s something the Panthers lacked last season when Delhomme was forced to miss three games with a thumb injury. Backup Chris Weinke was elevated to the starting lineup, but the Panthers lost his first two starts and let him attempt only seven passes in his final start. Weinke was released after the season.

The Panthers also had Joey Harrington, the third pick of the 2002 draft in for a visit, but Carr clearly was their top target. Sources have said the Panthers view Carr as a player who still has plenty of upside and could flourish with the right team and the right offensive system.

Although there was talk Carr could land with teams such as Oakland, Detroit or Cleveland where he might have a better initial shot at a starting job, the quarterback wanted to land in a situation that presented the best chance of resurrecting his career.

Carr came out of Fresno State viewed as a franchise quarterback. The expansion Houston Texans used their first pick on him (one pick before the Panthers selected defensive end Julius Peppers).

But Carr’s career never took off in Houston. Surrounded by poor offensive lines, he was under constant pressure from defenses. Coach Gary Kubiak stayed with Carr last season after replacing Dom Capers. But the Texans decided to part ways with Carr after making a trade with Atlanta for Matt Schaub and handing him the starting job. Carr was released last month.

Carr did show some progress under Kubiak, completing a career-best 68.3 of his passes and posting an 82.1 quarterback rating. For his career, Carr has completed 60 percent of his passes with a 75.5 quarterback rating. While completing 1,243 of 2,070 passes, Carr has thrown for 59 touchdowns with 65 interceptions.

The Panthers will go to training camp with second-year pro Brett Basanez as the third quarterback behind Delhomme and Carr.

Might be a good spot for him. Panthers have a solid offensive line, and Delhomme has been struggling lately..

but, then again, it is David Carr we're speaking about...

Delhomme struggled last year stats wise but the 3 previous years he was pretty good. He did miss 3 games last year which has some effect on his stats. He should be fine this year and Carr would make a decent backup.

great for steve smith owners me thinks. carr locks on to 1 wr more than delhomme does... :own3d:

I like this pickup for the Panthers also. A cheap 2 year contract is enough time to get a look at Carr, w/o giving up on Jake just yet.

I read this as the Raiders couldn't promise Carr that they WON'T take a QB 1st overall. Can't imagine he would have signed on as a backup over being a starter. Carr has a previous relationship with Kiffin from Fresno State.

This move was just to motivate Delhomme... :bs:

 would you rather play for the Raiders? He finally had a chance to play for a decent team and took it. Great decision by him and great pickup by Panthers.

In two years Delhomme is going to be 34 years old. Wienke, and it's easy to forget this, will be 35 already when the 2007 season starts. Carr was signed to see whether he could be the QB of the future and revive his career with a change of scenery. I think Delhomme has half a season to prove that he's the starter, but even if he does that he'll never be more than a few games from a Carr starting opportunity if he falters. Delhomme looked very mortal last year. I think that no matter what happens, they'll be drafting a QB next year to compete for the starting position, and possibly this year to replace Wienke.

 The math here is pretty simple. The Panthers have a solid running game and a coach devoted to establishing it and passing off of it versus vice-versa. Their offensive line is one of the better ones in the league. They have one of the top handful of WR's in the game. Their defense is very good and when healthy can be elite. For a QB who would like to get out of the spotlight and see if he can establish some kind of on-field rythem to get his career going again, that's about as perfect of a situation as you can find.

I was hoping the Packers would give him a look. I suspect he has something that he was prevented from showing by Houston's deplorable protection. I think he might yet resurrect his career.

I own Tom Brady, Delhomme, and Carr in my keeper league. I only want to keep 2 QB's on my roster going into draft day. Would you guys keep Delhomme or Carr?

I agree. I have to wonder whether he can be another Jim Plunkett for someone. Again, the Panthers are a perfect fit because they already have experience with a QB in Delhomme who was essentially abandoned in his late 20's by the team that drafted him.

I Like this move. I thought Carolina would be the best place for Carr.

He can go in as a backup without having the weight of the team and the franchise on his shoulders. He can carry a clip board and learn a little; and IF Delhomme has a bad year, he can get a chance late in the sesason to start. I just had a gut feeling that he was not pushing for a starting job this year. A year out of the pressure cooker may be a good thing.

IMHO if Carr went to a team where he would be expected to start right away, he would be out of the league in a year or two. This move lets him sit back, learn and either get the Panthers job in the future OR set himself for another chance in a couple of years. OR realize that he just doesn't have what it takes. My guess is that he resurfaces in a couple of years.

He may not make it, but he might.

As for Delhomme, he was never GREAT, but he is a leader. He had a bad year, but he was hurt and his OL had problems beginning with injuries in game 1 - which were compounded by SMith's injury. THe OL never recovered. Fans are too quick to discard him despite his bringing the team to the Super Bowl and to another championship game. The Panthers would be better served to draft a #3 QB to learn for a few years behind Delhomme and Carr and to take over the #1 or #2 spot in two years.

Weinke is gone.

The oline of the Panthers last year was a huge problem. This lead to a lot of rushed throws by Jake.

I noticed they have a young line. Was their O-Line issues due to inexperience and lack of continuity or lack of talent? Or a combination?

IIRC starting OT Wharton was hurt and out for season in 1st game. I think there were other injuries as well. That caused the line to be reshuffled and players to be inserted.

Nobody wants to play for the Raiders. :bag:

IMO, great addition for Carolina, you can't tell what kind of QB Carr really is, he has been running for his life from day one in Houston.

For Panther fans' sake, I hope this doesn't turn into another Cutler vs. Plummer situation, where the incumbent just falls apart at the first sign of a challenge to his job.

I don't foresee Carr starting unless Jake gets injured. There are some rumors though that Jake may still be having problems with his thumb injury from last year.

Agree this is win/win for both and a smart move by Carr. A lot of guys would have opted for a CLE/DET/OAK situation just to be a starter, but he needs...well not to be pounded to the turf 10 times a game, for starters. And in a situation where a team doesn't expect him to carry them on his back despite the lack of a team around him.

Basically he's better than a lot of people give him credit for and has at least a chance to prove it here sooner or later.

Delhomme isn't getting enough credit, but this does give CAR the best backup in the league just in case.

Jim Sorgi down?

Well, ummm, since Delhomme is the starter and Carr is the backup, I'd say maybe you should hold onto Delhomme.Sorry for the tone, but Carr is coming in to backup/push Delhomme.

Beautiful. As soon as Delhomme messes up, they will think Carr is the savior and he will feed DeAngelo Williams (oops) 10 passes a game with his dink and dunk routine.

There is nothing better than having a pass catching RB on a Carr QB'ed team. Other than that, he still totally sucks as a QB.

Weinke is gone.
I think Weinke was done even before Carr came to town. Remeber the game this past season when DeAngelo Williams took all those direct snaps instead of having a QB in. No confidence in Weinke whatsoever.

If he feeds DeAngelo Hall 10 passes a game he'll have a short career at Carolina.

I'm not sure it's that straightfoward.I understand your position completely, but the counter is that Carr was brought in BECAUSE Delhomme isn't getting it done. Carr is 28. Delhomme is 32. So the question in a keeper is who you think will be starting not just in 2007, but in 2008, 2009 etc.You clearly feel that Jake will be the starter in the short and mid-term. Others feel differently, especially for as early as 2008.

Sadly, you are mistaken. Gone will be any sort of big plays by Steve Smith unless he catches 5 yard passes and turns them into huge plays himself. He caught deep balls from Dehomme that will not happen with carr. Steve Smith will take a beating if he catchesd passes from Carr like AJ had to.Delhomme is good for Steve Smith.Carr is good for any RB and TE.

If you have to pick one the it's obviously Delhomme, until he's benched...which will most likely happen at some point. Fortunately you have Brady and can use him all year. Don't waste time with Carr.

:lmao: Not that I was wrong either way. He will feed both DeAngelos' plenty of passes.

good place for him to land. solid coaching staff, and no pressure to immediately produce.
I agree. This is a good situation for both the Panthers & Carr.As a Saints fan, I was hoping maybe he would land in New Orleans. Carr is still young and in the right system could turn out to be a good(but not great) QB. He can sit for a while in Carolina and heal from the beating he took in Houston and possibly grow as a QB. I agree what was posted that he is better than Weinke.

In this situation, I would keep Delhomme over Carr unless Delhomme gets injured b/w now and the time you have to make the decision.

 This guy is a Panther homer, knows his stuff, and has the right read on this situation, too. Delhomme is the guy in Carolina unless he gets hurt. Carr will not be competing with him for the starting job. Period.

As sick as it sounds, I am rooting for Carr to replace Delhomme as soon as possible. While the Panthers will surely spiral down as total losers when that happens, DeAngelo Williams will be the sole benifactor of Carr's presence. Loads of dumpoff passes taken for big yardage. :lmao:

great news for Steve Smith owners. If Delhomme is injured, he's about 10x better than Weinke!!!
My thoughts exactly. Weinke killed me last year (Steve Smith owner in multiple leagues). Also, there's been talk of replacing Delhomme so it'll be interesting to see what Carolina does if they start off slow or Delhomme has a bad game(s).

Delhomme is TRASH. I got to see first hand at the NFC Title game 2 years ago in Seattle how horrible he is... not being able to read defenses, throwing straight to the defender, etc. He wasnt much better last year either.

I own Tom Brady, Delhomme, and Carr in my keeper league. I only want to keep 2 QB's on my roster going into draft day. Would you guys keep Delhomme or Carr?
Any chance you can package both to a QB-starved team and take a bye week filler level QB in the rookie/FA draft? Chances are Brady starts most weeks for you anyway.

Trash? You'll be begging on your hands and knees for the football gods to re-insert Delhomme after 2 games full of carr. You think Delhomme can't read a defense? Carr wrote the book on how to not be able to read a defense.

I dont have the ability unfortunately to trade them to a QB starved team. Everyone else is happy with their QB, and would only look for one as a backup or 3rd string. I could honestly see Carr becoming the starter before the season is over... delhomme is getting older and inconsistent. I could see it happen now... whichever one i decide to keep, the other will be a FF stud.... my luck... thanks boys, for the input

Yeah, the entire team underpreformed last year from the start with injuries to the O-line, Smith, and on defense. Delhomme also hurt his hand at some point during the year.As others have noted, the Panther's needed a backup since Weinke literally couldn't coplete a pass (see the Atlanta game). At this point Carr is simply cheap insurance, Delhomme wil be the starting QB for as long as he's healthy and the team isn't 1-4 or other such record.

Solid contract for a backup, no?
