Carson Palmer and ? (1 Viewer)

I've recently been entertaining the idea of grabbing C. Palmer and another strong QB. Passing TDs are worth as much as rush/rec TDs in our league, so having a top QB is essential. I think the recent news on his recovery is going to cause him to slip in my draft. But even if he doesn't play until October I think he could still be a great value pick if paired with a good QB to cover the first weeks of the season.

Two questions for those you who may have tried or are thinking of trying this:

1. When do you grab Palmer?

2. Who are you taking as your other QB? (and when?)

1. Can't really answer that, as the leagues in which I have Palmer, he's a keeper.2. I think worst case scenario, you'll need someone to hold the fort for Palmer for a few weeks. I picked up Kitna as his backup, but I would think one of the older dudes, Brunell or Brad Johnson, might be able to stay healthy enough for a few weeks in case Palmer needs some time. Simms also springs to mind.

I'd also say that Palmer's situation shouldn't really affect who you get as a backup, but when. I think any time you can get a decent backup, you get one, whether it's Palmer, or Manning. Might be more interesting to see which round people are getting their backups, in redraft leagues.

Backing him up with Kurt Warner1) Palmer may be out till week 6, Warner has a nice early season schedule2) can be had for a reasonable price tag3) should put up top 5 type numbers while healthyI've done this in 1 league already, and plan to do so in 2 more.

Palmer is going to play in the preseason look at the news blogger.

I do not think he will miss much time if at all. If I had to choice someone to carry the load until a few weeks into the season I would take Warner.

This is a very sound strategy. I don't think Palmer will be out until week 6 but it is starting to look like he might not be ready for the start of the season. Even if he is healthy the Bengals schedule starts out tough but then gets much easier the second half of the season and by that time Warner will likely be hurt.

Backing him up with Kurt Warner
 That's like backing up FT with Foster. Course all he'd have to do is stay healthy for a month (if that), but we are talking Warner here. First I have heard nothing of this "starts in Oct" stuff, can anyone confirm/deny the latest likelihood (ie something said or implied by the actual team/coach/players, not just unfounded opinions)? All I have heard is he won't play pre-season and is reasonably expected to start Week 1. Second, if the Oct stuff is true or more likely, I'm taking someone with more upside (or more proven) than Kitna. Who is a thread in itself....Personally I would love to get him cheaper than expected in our auction, but not holding my breath.

Palmer will not only play this preseason but he will be there week 1. However, he may not be effective or the Palmer we are used too until week 6 or so.Tom

If Palmer doesn't feel he is healthy enough to play a few series in a preseason game how much confidence do you have that he'll be healthy enough to play in Week 1? The difference in speed between practice and a regular season game is huge, and you can bet KC is going to coming after Palmer full guns. My draft is Sept. 3 and if Palmer doesn't play in any preseason games then I am staying away from him unless he falls way below his ADP.

In a recent redraft (before he started talking about his comfort level) I got Palmer in the 5th round, I then backed him up with Leftwich somewhere around the 8th/9th round.

It may have nothing to do with feeling healthy enough; maybe he's just not taking any chances. And I don't blame him.

 who said anything about practice? The difference in speed between PRE-SEASON and a regular season game is about nil.

I took Palmer in my 3 man keeper league with the first pick of the 2nd (5th round considering keepers).

I did want to back him up with a solid guy, so I took Delhomme in the 8th (actually 11th). I actually started the backup QB run with this pick as 7 of the next 8 were QB's.

I love Delhomme as a backup to Palmer!

I should clarify further. I'm not predicting Palmer to wait until week 6 to start. I'm just pointing out that if it does work out that way, Warner's early season scheduled is favorable (SanFran, Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta, & KC.).If Palmer does start opening day and needs a few games to knock off the rust, you could do worse than to start Warner against the first 3 opponents listed.Your obviously not as high on Warner as I am. I like him to finish top 10 this year. Feel free to bump in December if I'm way off.

:goodposting: I draft next weekend - I don't think at that time anyone will be able to say with confidence that Palmer will be worth a week 1 fantasy start - or even a week 6 fantasy start.Right now I'm liking Warner who may slip further then guys like Leftwich and Delhomme. And may even grab Lienart with a super late pick as Warner insurance (we have huge rosters).

In my three team keeper league, I took Bulger to back him up. He fell further than what he should have an I scooped him up. I'll use him if I have to, but plan on using Bulger as trade bait later in the year. Some teams have very bad starting QB's because they waited too long.

Here is an rticle from yesterday, looks to me like it is an issue of being healthy:
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer said he is not well enough to play Friday, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Thursday. "I'm not going to cover anything up," Palmer told the newspaper. "I've got nothing to hide. I'm not going out there until I'm 100 percent. And I don't feel like I have to hide anything about that. If I was going to go out there and do something silly and try to play at 85 percent, then that's not the best thing for me or the organization. This organization wants me to be 100 percent."

I was talking about not playing in any preseason games (only practicing) and then starting week 1. If he misses all of preseason there is going be a BIG difference in speed.
